Ever since the birth of home theater, there has been a chasm between having a great-sounding two-channel stereo system and a home theater surround sound system in the same room. Audiophiles cringed at the idea of listening to their vinyl, CDs, or digital music files through a less-than-ideal home theater receiver. And on the other hand, some home theater enthusiasts who wanted to dive into the world of high-res music or analog wondered how this could work with their home theater setup.
In the early days of surround sound, accomplishing this goal was daunting and might involve combining two systems, then physically moving cables around, which was extremely inconvenient. Then, the makers of better-sounding two-channel audio gear recognized this need and added a new feature to their products that made it all simple as could be. That new feature had several different names depending on the brand, but they all did the same thing, which we will call the home theater bypass.

    You setup looks great. I get great audio reports with my T4XB using a Shure 444 (high impedance to match the Drake input ) which was a popular combination back in the day. I had tried a Turner 454C SSB mic and the feedback was the audio is tinny. The D-104 also has high treble - to me it’s not great for SSB but others work probably argue that. I’ve heard the Turner +3 is an awesome sounding mic. 73.

    Hello. How do you setup home theater bypass between anthem STR stereo preamp and a Denon receiver 4700h that is currently using an external amplifier. It seems like I would have to remove the external amplifier connection from the Denon in order to make the pre-outs available for this home theater bypass with the anthem STR preamp. Additionally, I would then need to connect the anthem Left & Right channels directly with the external amplifier via XLR since no rca connectors are available on the anthem. Lastly, I would need a special cable (XLR to rca) going from amplifier to my center pre-out on my Denon?

  • @AudioAdvice

    @AudioAdvice

    7 ай бұрын

    If you have an external stereo amp connected to the Denon for your main speaekers, it should be connected to the Anthem. If you have just a mono amp connected to the Denon for the center channel, you leave that in place. Your STR should have 4 analog RCA inputs. And should you have bought all this from Audio Advice, we would have walked you through it already :)

    Here is my scenario and im a noob.... I pretty much have a 7.2 speaker setup but have all speakers play music in stereo(left and right). What I've done for now is buy xlr splitter cables to split front left pre-out signal from my pre/pro-amp to 2 amp channels where I have 1 amp channel (monolith 7x)connected to my left tower speaker and the other connected amp channel to 2 satellite speakers(above my left side of couch) and the other (behind left side of couch). The non tower speakers are smaller 4ohm satellite speakers wired in parallel. My setup is the same on the right side. Is there a better way to do that? can I "assign" my assignable height 1 and 2 to the Front Left on the pre-pro and then connect the height preouts to amp channels so I don't need splitter cables? I prefer a room full of sound all the time where i'm in the center of it with music and if I decide to watch a movie, I can swap the cables and change the settings back. With surround movies, most of the time, the surround speakers just stay dormant until their called upon and with music, there off.

They work great and one 40$ adapter works for 2 channels. You can use this HUGE HACK on almost any old receiver without Pre-outs provided you have a seperate amp with RCA inputs and dont have to buy a 800$-1000$ AVR. • @scottwallace1

    Direct mode is simply bypassing a lot of the signal processing inside the unit. Home Theater Bypass, as Audio Advice clearly described, is leveraging a much higher performance piece of gear to drive your stereo pair, but seamlessly integrating it to work with an existing home theater receiver, even the very best of which pale in comparison to a comparably priced dedicated stereo unit. That’s no insult to the home theater receiver by the way. It’s simple fact. Home theater receivers can be awesome. But 5, 7, 9, 11, or 15(!) channels of amplification in one chassis? Compared to a chassis with a massive power supply dedicated to only two channels??? It’s science man!!! 😉

    Maybe buy a premium AV and pair with a mighty AMP and source all power to amp? That is the point we were trying to get across on how to combine a high quality two channel system (pick your choices) and a home theater.
