We grew the golden beets last year for the first time. I can't believe how good they are roasted in the oven, my goodness! 😋

I second don't provide cover for the voles to solve the problem. I learned that about voles last year the hard way. I had black landscape fabric in my greenhouse last winter because it was the first winter for the house and I thought it would help keep any new weeds down and help with holding heat. Mostly what it did was help some voles hide from the neighbor cats for the winter. You would be working and then see a lettuce head just suddenly wiggle and sink through the holes in the landscape fabric. This year I didn't put down any fabric, I've had no voles and no noticeable difference in yield or speed of regrowth. I see it a lot in the field also whenever I use landscape fabric mulch, they just love it. I've been working more and more to getting to just pure wire weeder cultivation, but I'm basically in a mountain forest in Japan and the perennial weeds are so crazy I still like to use it for new beds on the first crop, but they really flock to it.

"I'm not a vampire, I just like to eat raw beets!" is not something I want to have to say. I'll have my blood turnips cooked... Thanks for sharing!

Great info! What other recommendations would you have for controlling or eliminating Voles organically? Thay have taken over my garden last year.

If you use plastic mulch or landscape fabric, you might also notice that they sort of flock to it. I stopped using it in a lot of places and they stopped flocking to my beds.

We had a big vole problem until we got two barn cats from a local shelter.
