    I start my season by applying ulexite (which is rich in boron) and compost to the soil. I direct sow. About 30 days in, I spray with magnesium sulfate and neem. Beets are clean as a whistle. My only complaint is that my customers don’t love eating beets as much as I like growing them. So it’s a secondary crop here.

    Thanx for the tips...I must admit I never really payed much attention to the leaf damage...slug damage is always the main concern,especially with young transplants.I will try the spacings and see if I can get boron,when we run out of our own beets we buy from a local stall...and are always disappointed...I'm sure they are grown using chemical fertilizers..and never taste as sweet or as nice as our own.I always wondered what the spots were caused by... thanx 👍

    Thank you for the tips! Do you thin the beet seedlings to one plant per cell?

  • @rongpinshen6962

    @rongpinshen6962

    We grow beets from seed successfully last season. We don’t thin the seedlings until transplanting day. But don’t “thin” it. If there are more than one seedling in a cell, just carefully tear roots apart and each seedling is good to be transplanted. My experience is tearing root apart doesn’t affect seedling growth too much. 😊

    We sow 1 cluster seed in each module but have very patchy germination. It feels like some cluster cells can have 3 seeds and some only 1. What is the best way to get more consistent germination across the trays? Would you sow two cluster seeds per module or buy mono seed instead? Thanks. Aoife

    A friend of mine suggested tonight to use regular house mouse traps(many of them) with... a piece of fresh carrot as bait... We both have voles problem(chewing tops of carrots and beets, and also... parsley roots !) and have searched since June how to cope with those pests... After desperately trying this and that without success, he found that carrot pieces are the best. I'll try it tomorrow and maybe you can do so ? Wishing you good luck !
