The reason why blowing your own sail works is because the propeller sucks in air not just from behind but from the sides as well, so the forces don't actually cancels out.

it is a mystery how explosions in space are so loud and visible, given that is no atmosphere medium in space.

When it comes to the sail thing, I guess what's happening is that the air moving from the inside of the sail to the outside and over sucks air from the forward facing side of the sail, creating a negative pressure in the front. The flapping of the sides would indicate fluctuation in these parts. It also could be twisters around the cylinder the direct opening of the thrusters towards the sails create because of viscosity. Hard to tell without a channel, really.

None of the Newtonian Laws was violated since the interaction was not localized,, the fan gets the air volume outside the sail boat. If you ran a giant fan inside a space station and no air escapes then the station isn't going anywhere

Most of the myths tested you can intuit the outcome from the get god, but I was really suprised by the silencer test. I live in the UK, so I've never seen or handled a gun irl; I assumed the shot would only be marginally quieter.

@@bradameerbeg2154 He also didn't have his finger ON the trigger, it looks like. So, safe to say cleared, and still practicing a degree of safety by not having a finger on the trigger, which is how most negligent discharges occur. No. 1 mistake of novice shooters, right there, and Adam got that part right.

@@tt128556Barring a freak malfunction, yes. A lot of people forget you reduce the likelihood of a negligent discharge by about 99% just by not having a finger on the trigger. Adam even calls out that he was waving it and has a chuckle that people would call it out. 100% aware of how to be safe with reason, which means the local Sheriffs gave him a few tips on safety.

Would've been nice if the guys used supersonic and subsonic rounds with the subs being quieter. Demo Ranch did some testing a while back. Oh, and that a supressor is louder on the first bullet, second+ is quieter but I have no idea why.

Uncombusted gases in the suppressor must combust due to the heat and pressure. Once you have done so, no further combustion inside the baffling is possible due to the exhaust, which means quieter shots. It also is fun to note that the 'suppressed weapons are not as powerful' myth is also incorrect. The extra energy that must be redirected and dissipated is added to the propulsion of the round and the twist, which makes a normally easy-to-stop round capable of poking holes in soft body armor like Kevlar. Also also, leaving the suppressor to 'cool' allows the same uncombusted gases back into the baffling, which means you have to start over when you let the suppressor sit. Demo Ranch did a more in-depth showing of it a couple years ago.

Notice the drips of water coming off the suppressor in the slow-mo. Maybe they had cooled it down in water between shots, generally not a good idea for longevity, but there must be some explanation for the water.

Sub-sonic bullets are used in guns with suppressors, a bullet is still accelerating after it leaves the barrel, and it breaks the sound barrier well away from where the suppressor is, like the tip of a whip that makes a crack that is the loudest noise you hear when the projectile breaks the sound barrier.

@musicbruv yes they do! Muzzle velocity is met when all gases behind the projectile stop accelerating it, that happens up to a few inches from the end of the barrel. It was once thought that maximum speed of a projectile was immediately at the end of the barrel but this is not so. I worked in ballistics at Winchester (Olin Australia) when testing and measuring projectile velocity sensors had to be set about a foot away from the muzzle to get an accurate measure.

Actually... That sail looked like a plane wing. Which is the whole points of a sail.... The sail creates a low pressure zone in front of the sail and a high pressure zone behind the sail. The boat moves into the low pressure zone and is sucked forward.... it actually works, but its extremely inefficiently to do it this way with a fan :D

For full scale "blow your own sail" i don't understand why they didn't just use a real sail.. lol The one used seemed way too small to be fully efective with the fan

Funny thing about the punch sound effect from Hollywood...it's actually more realistic than what people think, to the person getting punched. As I'm sure everyone knows, sounds going through your own head sound different to you then nearby bystanders (which is why people often are surprised by how their voices sound on a recording vs what they hear themselves as they speak). As a martial artist I've (unfortunately) been punched in the face a couple of times, and the sound I heard was similar to the Hollywood one to a rather surprising level.

The force needed to move a boat in water isn't linear. If you are careful enough, and the water is completely calm, you can move a full container ship using a single thread. You just have to move really, really, slow.

I hate movies that add way, way too much sounds in things that would not make a sound. If a film writing is so bad that you would need to keep audience wake or interested with all other stupid bullshit... i don't know, try to make better films? Sometimes silence elevates a scene even more. Way better than odd mechanical clicks, clacks and bloops.

The sailing myth was actually busted, considering you'd go about 10x as fast if you turned the fan around.
