Legend is that it is celebrated for the burning of Holika who was trying to kill her nephew, a believer, Prahlad. So a symbolic Holika is burned in the night, and the next day colours are played. However like almost all religions, playing colours could be older than the religious legend itself. Playing colours is symbolic more for coming of summers and a rich potential harvest.

Something tells me that having fine particles of pigment throw into the air in people's faces isn't good for your lungs or health. It looks beautiful but I don't get the feeling that it doesn't have it's problems. You very well could end up with sevre breathing problems like COPD, bronchitis or pneumonia
