One of my biggest life dreams were to learn how to scuba dive but Last-night I had a nightmare about my lungs bursting when scuba diving and it’s now a nightmare 😢

Could you please clarify something for me? I've always believed that you shouldn't hold your breath while scuba diving. Recently, during advanced sidemount training (theory), I was instructed to hold my breath while transitioning from my first tank (attached to a line) to my second tank (also attached to a line, 1m apart). After giving my instructor the concern of "you shouldn't hold your breath while scuba diving," my instructor then posed the question, "Why would you need to release air if the pressure doesn't change?" The risk of releasing air while switching regulators is that it could alter your buoyancy, which is something you definitely want to avoid when you're without regulators. Similarly, the same principle applies when dealing with deploying a dSMB, although there's less concern about holding one's breath since dSMBs are typically deployed at shallow depths. The process involves taking a deep breath, exhaling onto the dSMB, and refraining from inhaling again before releasing the dSMB, as inhaling could alter buoyancy by adding more air. So, my question is: Is this indeed true? I have this training coming up in a couple of weeks (including the release of dSMB at depth) and would appreciate your clarification.

First rule of diving, do not hold your breath. Your air consumption will greatly improve with every dive

if you run our of air always keep making bubbles and get to the surface and quickly as possible. You should always dive with a buddy! Use their oxygen either by using an octopus regulator or you each take turns using the regulator will you get the surface. To keep your take full try to remain calm and take slow deep breaths that has always help me keep my tank remain full or I would plan for a shorter dive knowing I use more oxygen. This is in the United States and with a NAUI certification.

Don't take much to blow a lung even holding your breath from 6 feet deep, if you took a big breath prior to, you will pip a lung. And you won't know until it's too late
