Why Should You Never Hold your Breath while Scuba Diving

The most important rule in scuba diving is to never hold your breath. But why should you never hold your breath while scuba diving?
Same as our ears we also have to equalize our lungs while scuba diving. If we don’t then on the ascent we risk lung overextension injury. This is a serious condition that can be life-threatening.
If we hold our breath while scuba diving on the ascent, we trap the air in our lungs and that starts expanding as we move from high to low pressure, to the point it can damage our lungs. This is why you should never hold your breath while scuba diving.
The good news is that we can easily solve this by doing nothing special other than breathing. When you scuba dive you should always breathe continuously and never hold your breath to let air escape from your lungs at any time, especially during ascent.
What can happen when you hold your breath during scuba diving?
If you hold your breath on the ascent while scuba diving you can rupture your lungs as expanding air cannot escape. When you ascend you move from high surrounding pressure to low pressure. This causes air from your lungs to expand.
This is not a problem if you breathe continuously, but if you hold your breath you trap the air in your lungs, and on the ascent, it can expand to a volume that can cause serious lung overexpansion (lung rupture) injuries.

I absolutely don't want to find out,(don't wanna get any bad habits) but if you held your breath and swim downwards, is that also theoretically dangerous? Obviously that's negative presure instead of positive

Yeah, good question. We still don't recommend it as you might flood up or get a habit of holding the breath under the water. That is why we just always breath or maybe exhale slowly by blowing small bubbles.

Ok, I’m scuba diving in Hawaii and out dive master was amazing at conserving air. And then there was me who would use a ton of air. And I asked for advice on how to conserve air and he told me do this: To inhale fast, no to fast, hold my breath for 3 seconds. And slowly exhale. Should I listen to this or not?

Hi, there are many tricks to improve on your air consumption, but I usually personally not advise people to hold their breath even for a few seconds as that can increase the risk for some people in some situations.
