Buoyancy Tips for Diving - Why is Good Buoyancy Important?

Why is it important to have good buoyancy while scuba diving? Buoyancy control is one of the most important things to master when scuba diving. Adjusting your buoyancy is not easy for beginner scuba divers, but after some practice, it will become second nature.
You can compare learning buoyancy controls the same as learning how to ride a bicycle or car. In the beginning, it feels impossible to master, but after some time passed you hardly think about it.
We mainly like to use our lungs for buoyancy control. By breathing in you expand your lung, displacing more water which makes you rise(ascent) a bit. Exhaling will deflate your lungs, displacing less water which in turn makes you fall(descent) a bit. By breathing normally you should stay in one place, hover and achieve neutral buoyancy.
If you can’t control your buoyancy with your lungs then you can also use your BCD for buoyancy control by adding or releasing a bit of air from it.

Hello Marcel. As always, good stuff. I think, we cannot have a conversation about “good buoyancy” without having a conversation about the amount of weights a diver is “assigned” during their first open water. I’m my case, I was about 8lbs over weight. Being that the case, I spent a lot of time in the pool, figuring this out by myself. A lot more time needs to be dedicated (by instructors) to dining the correct weight during that initial OW course, to get divers started in the right foot.

The configuration matters as well. I would recommend switching to a backplate a wing, if you are going to put the tanks on your back. Otherwise, sidemount is a good choice for a lot of divers. Propulsion with frog kicks gives you access to helicopter turns and backfinning, so I would suggest moving away from flutter kicking.
