These Scuba Diving Hand Signals are used by most Scuba Divers. Scuba Diving Hand Signals are shown by PADI Platinum Course Director Marcel van den Berg and these Scuba Diving Hand Signals are used in the PADI IDC, Divemaster, recreational scuba diving courses and fun diving.

If you want to be a good or even the best PADI Scuba Diving Instructor or Divemaster then you need to give good and strong Scuba Diving Hand Signals under the water to communicate clearly with your scuba diving students.
Differences between good and bad scuba diving hand signals to give as a dive professional:
Bad scuba diving hand signals:
-Weak/soft hand signals (fun divers and students don't take these scuba signals seriously)
-To strong/aggressive scuba diving hand signals (can scare the fun diver or student, diving is supposed to be fun)
Good scuba diving hand signals:
-Right in between a strong and weak hand signal like shown in this KZread video
-Long enough to be seen
-Friendly scuba diving hand signals
There are no standards on how a scuba diving hand signal has to be given. That is the reason why you sometimes see slightly different scuba diving signals depending on location and Divemaster, PADI Instructor or Diver.
A small difference in a signal, for example "more distance in between divers" might not be that bad, but if a buddy team uses very different scuba diving hand signals for air/gas consumption that can be dangerous. In other words it is very important to always go over the hand signals used on that scuba dive before the scuba dive. Especially with new people or scuba diving students.
If you are taking your PADI Divemaster or PADI IDC course then it's important to have realistic scuba diving hand signals. You can have slightly different signals, but it has to come close to what it means. Like for example: PADI Staff won't like it if you start flapping your hands like a bird to introduce that you have 70 bar air/gas left. But they do accept different scuba diving signals for 70 bar as long as they are serious and commonly used.

Confidence comes with the number of dives. To be confident at least 200 dives because when things happen under water your rescue skills shall be instinctively not now take time thinking what to do. For every scuba problem there is a solution. You just need to have them as first instinct not as a theory

Very clear instructional video. A few items of note, at if you or your buddy is under 50 bar, you better be at least at your safety stop, secondly I had a Aladdin Air Z Nitrox years ago and once I sat in the water to see how accurate it read the tank pressure. At a reading of 23 bar it was empty.

Yes I agree. On shallow dives I like to ascent to my safety stop with 60 bar and on deeper recreational dives I go up at 80 bar. Safety first :)

Hi Birgit, Thank you!! Actually, it was the reason for the video in the first place. When I taught beginner and even experienced divers, I noticed a huge difference in their comfort level underwater depending on how I was reacting with signals and movements. Now I teach mainly new Diving Instructors and I wanted them to see how important it was to give scuba hand signals a certain way to relax your students. Too many new professionals have weak, hard or robotic hand signals, so I hoped this video helped them and new future scuba divers :) Please check out this article that I wrote about scuba diving hand signals: www.scubadivingtips.net/scuba-diving-hand-signals.html The best tip for you if you still feel a it insecure about diving is to dive more. But take it easy and book easy shallow dives first with a dive leader that doesn't swim so fast. Talk to them before hand and let them know how you feel. It really helps. Or take the Advanced course with a great instructor. Have a good day Birgit!

Giong diving today after 8 months so this was very helpful. First time in a cold water lake. I'm trying to get a grip on my nerves even after 125 dives.

Very cold indeed! 9 degrees with only a 7mm wetsuit that was too big for me. So not really enoyed the 30 minute dive althiugh we saw a big pike.

That is so cool to hear! Yes I always teach that how to signal is one of the most important things for divers, as the way you signal can make people feel safe and it is more effective to signal like you are talking. The trick is to speak though your regulator while signalling ;)

*After 2 dives with this BCD (and it may be because im new to diving) the only problem i really have with this is the side air bladders. When im at depth they tend to slide up the sides of the strap trapping air into it and not releasing it making it mess with my buoyancy. I'm having to pull them down to my waist and squeezing them to remove the air when trying to descend. I haven't had any other problems with it yet. im going to buy a Velcro strap to help keep them by my side.*

took my diving lisence when I were 12 im not 27. I made it in sweden where I took it,and all of these are linked to me.buit its hard to replicate outside of this. Its noce tho.

Trust me , Ive never seen anyone have the composure to do the "puke" hand jive before they barfed, - granted in 40+ years of diving I've only seen this twice, its very scary as drowning is a real possibility. good video tho. also the "bar" pressure looks just like the safety stop signal esp with gloves on.

Yeah, I had a few students giving me the puke signal, more to say that they felt sick followed by the up signal as they wanted to go up, which we did end ended the dive. But you are right it is very rare. For the bar signals, it is a style. you can change and adjust those signals depending on what people like, are used to and if they wear gloves etc. :) Have a good day buddy!

You will be surprised how quick you will learn them and your diving instructor will repeat them many times.
You forgot the most important "I am exhausted sign" being exhausted leads to breathing difficulty then PANICK. Either a rapid ascent causing lung over expansion injuries or decompression accidents or drowning.

Good video but you missed some important stuff. Tapping 1st and 2nd finger on your shoulder= I am the leader or I am taking the lead or giving the lead to someone. Using your two hands to tell you divers to stay at your level, below you or above you. A closed fist Infront with extended arm means danger. Feeling dizzy sign. Exhausted sign. Afraid sign. Using both have to signal your divers to stay close behind or Infront of you. Dive is over sign cross arms. I am a course director too cmas and PADI instructor. some signs aren't the same between the two agencies. Thailand is nice. I had a diving center in Andaman and 1 in Egypt Hurgada. I am able to speak a little Arabic now bro

I learned to sign 50 bar with my fist, not five fingers. So 150 would be 100 - sign plus fist

Hi Der, yes that is also a great signal for 150 bar. As long as you agree to use the same signals as your buddy, just before the dive you can use different variations :) Enjoy your dives buddy!

im sure when I did my course last year in the uk 50 bar was a closed fist when asking how much air you have left.. got me confused now

Hi Pete, Hand signal are slightly different from person to person, location or sometimes even training organisations. Your or my signals are not wrong just different. That is why it is very important to always go over the hand signals before a dive, especially when you dive with new people. Have an awesome day Pete!
