Whether you're a runner or a walker, the Gaviota 5 offers an exceptional combination of plush cushioning and reliable stability. Get ready to discover the perfect shoe for your active pursuits.
The Hoka Gaviota 5, set to release in August 2023, is Hoka's most cushioned and stable model to date. Packed with exciting updates, this shoe is designed to elevate your running performance and comfort. With a 36mm max stack height and a 6mm drop, the Gaviota 5 provides a responsive and supportive platform for your stride.
Steve delves into the shoe's features, highlighting the innovative stability design. Unlike its predecessor, the Gaviota 5 incorporates a new "H" format within the shoe, ensuring enhanced stability and a secure fit. This feature, coupled with strategically placed denser materials, provides a grounded and confident feel, making it ideal for walkers and runners seeking stability.
While the Gaviota 5 shares some resemblance with the popular Bondi model, it offers even more cushioning and targeted stability. Steve discusses the shoe's weight, accommodating fit, and the potential for adding orthotics if desired. He also addresses the current width options and expresses a hope for future expanded choices.
With its remarkable stability, plush cushioning, and enduring durability, the Hoka Gaviota 5 is poised to be your go-to shoe for long-distance running, walking, or all-day wear. Despite its 10.9-ounce weight, it surprises with a comfortable and responsive feel on the run.

I just so happened to come across your video, and glad I did. I currently am in the Bondi shoe, and I've had it for 2 yrs now. For some reason the back of the shoe above my heel has worn through. The cushion is now exposed. I really want to try the Hoka Gaviota 5 now. I work 9 hrs days on my feet, and Hoka's have been my life savior. Had Plantar Fasciitis for a year prior to purchasing the Bondi shoe, the worst pain every, and after wearing them for 2 weeks my Plantar Fascitis was GONE!! No joke!! After seeing numerous Doctors, spending lots of money, and going to physical therapy many many times, I came across Hoka's, and I will never wear a different shoe. Now my office has six employees wearing them. We all swear by them. Thank you for a great review too.

I've had the same problem with my Gaviota-4, when I use my stability inserts or orthodics. I've since removed them and actually run better but the damage is done. I'm now due to replace them due to mileage, not too happy about the price. Were you wearing inserts or othodics in your Bondi?

Awesome video. Keep up the great work. I have had the bondi in the past after some foot surgery, and only issue I always had was the top mesh area tearing a hole in it from my big toe maybe going up and down or something :) They need to make a strong mesh up in that area. I recently tried on the Gaviota, and that sneaker is amazing feeling too. Very hard decision to make on Bondi or Gaviota, and still trying to see why the Gaviota even feels better yet seems to have similar toe box, etc. Just feels more comfy. Thanks again for the great video. Need to head to Scheels here in Arizona to make my decision :) I love all the awesome colors of Bondi though, so it makes it tough.

Glad to hear you love your 4s! The Gaviota 5 now has an all-terrain trail/hike counterpart shoe called the Stinson 7. It has the same H-Frame stability system and high stack height as the Gaviota. The only addition is a more water-resistant upper and a more rugged outsole with lugs to grip uneven surfaces better.

Great review! Thank you. My orthopaedic surgeon has ‘prescribed’ these to me after breaking my foot and wearing a walking boot for 6 weeks. I’m on my feet 8-12 hours a day, working on train stations, so this stability and softness is really important. At first they hurt a bit as my foot was positioned differently to normal, but now, so comfortable and easy to wear daily. As I’m new to HOKA, may I ask, do they introduce new colours over the year or so of a certain model being current, or is it only when a new update happens. I have black for work but would like a funkier colour for exercise. Thanks again, from Australia!

Steve, it seems to me Hoka's stability approach in the lateral heel-strike area tends to be a bit different from many brands. I mean, with the 'J-frame' they seemed to going for firm control in that corner, rather than some form of beveled or "de-coupled' crash pad, aimed at minimizing (or softening) the twist reaction. Am I missing something ?

I’m a walker of 10 miles a day 5 days a week and have plantar fasciitis in my right foot and a neuroma on my left. My pain has substantially decreased in 3 days as the Gavin’s has more toe room than the bondi 8 in my opinion. If your a walker grab a pair of these bad boys.

Strongly agree. It's strange that the brand which churns out super-wide footprint soles all day long has such difficulty accommodating wide, flattened feet. When NewBalance and Asics "borrow" the wide platform, I'm all over it. Simply because they also prove that they know how to make wide uppers. I've often wondered if it's because Hoka started out all paranoid about being pigeonholed as "the fat-foot brand." In any case it seems silly now that so many others look similar, and repeatedly "out-Hoka, Hoka."

I can't wear HOKA, they are the weirdest shoes around. Never is it wide enough, I mean the frame of the shoe either. My inner foot and arches step on top of the frame and it is painful, I returned them. They make an odd hour glass shoe which forces my feet and hips to do something unnatural and it hurts me. Can't wear them at all. It curves the foot instead of straight ahead.

I have the same issues with other shoes in the Hoka lineup. There wide is definitely not a wide. However with the Gaviota5 the wide is a wide, at least for me. And the shoe has a nice wide base all around. Fits more like a New Balance wide shoe to me. It does have that guidance/support built into the shoe, not a neutral shoe. But for me, so far it's the only Hoka shoe that fits.@@birdlynn417

I'm curious, is it necessary to replace the Hoka insole with a hard plastic orthotic insert or a more modern custom insert? From your video, I gathered that I might be able to just wear the shoe as is, and that orthotics are primarily for shoes with zero support or neutral shoes. Thank you for your insight, and as always, I appreciate your informative videos!

@@3dprintzzz The answer is, it depends. If you have custom inserts then your podiatrist possibly designed them to be coupled with the style of shoe you were wearing back in that time frame. But not necessarily, and it doesn't always matter. It's not a sure bet that it will over correct you, and in a shoe like this, where the outer side has also been reinforced, it is less likely to cause problems like an ankle sprain (from rolling your ankle).

Thanks for the support! Both models you mentioned are great supportive and stable options to help over-pronation. The Gaviota 5 is more of a max cushion and max support option, while the Arahi is a little bit lighter and does not offer quite as much cushion underfoot. For a longer race like that, we would recommend the Gaviota 5, but either shoe would be a good option.

I just bought the Arahi 7s and have worn the 6s but the 7s feel cramped on the sides of my foot. Would the Gaviota be a better pick or a wide Arahi 7?

I tried both on today, Arahi 7s are far too narrow - I have a B width foot and they were too tight even for me. I didn't try the wide Arahi's. Gaviotas nice and roomy :)

I purchased Gaviota 5 yesterday's and i tried it today. As an RN, I used Hoka and started with Clifton 8. When it cushion to comfort of sole, Clifton is much better. I find Gaviota quite hard . Its my personal experience.

No. We have a few people with a neutral gait who bought a pair and have no issues. The H-Frame support system works similarly to Brooks' GuideRail system. It supports you if you need it but doesn't have an effect if you don't.

I went through a Hoka phase over the past two years (ordering Clifton’s, Bondi 7 & 8) The worst shoe has been the Bondi 8. The fit is fine but the rubber wear on the soles have been the worst of any shoe that I’ve ever purchased. I have only walked in these shoes , never run and I only walk 1 mile a day in these shoes to walk my dogs. I’m fine with paying $150+ for shoes that last but these are ridiculous. The best shoes for wear and comfort have been the Bondi 7’s. I bought two pairs and they show minimal wear. I don’t understand where Hoka is going with these fast wearing soles.

Do Not Buy This Shoe!!! This was the most expensive shoe I have ever bought. I'm dealing with plantar fasciitis and while it did help some, the shoe only lasted 3 months before getting a large hole on the top where the fabric meets the front at the seam where they join. I can no longer wear them to work. A $200 pair of shoes should last longer than 3 months of walking. I do not even run. The warranty so far has been a crock of shit - the store said I had to send them back and to contact the complaint line. They sent me a bar code and said I could use that to ship them back at UPS. That was a lie. I called again and they said they meant the USPS. I went there and after waiting in line 40 mins they said the bar code does not do anything and I have to make a label myself and mail them. I’m ready just to burn them in front of the store with a big sign that says Do Not Shop Here!! Save yourself $200 and stay far away from this shoe. The person at the store when he saw the hole said it is a newer design and they have been having trouble with them!! My question is - if the store has discovered that the $200 shoe they are selling is poorly manufactured why have they not stopped carrying it? they should offer a replacement of another style that does hold up or offer to reimburse the customer. I will never shop there again and if you work hard for your money you should not either!!
