A comparison with the Puma Forever Run would be interesting...also marketed as a stability shoe..

Hi Tim. Excellent review! I'm seriously considering getting the Gaviota 5s, especially after this review. I'm not a runner, but I'm looking for an all-day/all-purpose, max cushion, max stability walking shoe to help with foot and knee pain and also support my heavy frame. I was considering the Brooks Adrenaline but the Gaviota 5's H-frame has me very interested - I supinate so I think it will work better for me. I wanted to know whether I should consider the Stinson 7s over the Gaviota 5s because although I don't do anything trail, I do live in an area with extremely steep inclines and cobblestone streets which get very slippery when wet - and perhaps the Stinson 7s will offer more traction. What's your opinion on which shoe would work better for me? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the review! Looking forward to what you think after you get some miles in! I’m currently running in the gaviota 4s and I really like them but they feel more comfortable and I break them in so I would be very excited to try these out soon for a little bit more comfort :)

I'll start putting some run miles in these soon. I've been wearing them as a lifestyle shoe since I got them. They do a great job. I've only run a few miles in them so far. I've struggled with tendonitis in my ankle that has kept me from running as much as I'd like too. Now that I'm done with Marathon season for this year, I have a few weeks before starting my next training block so I'll be taking the opportunity to heal and do some PT. But I will definitely be reaching for the Gaviota when I get back to running again. Have a great weekend!

I'm quite interested in the roomier toe box, because I need more than your typical Hoka provides. I also tend to do well with the type of 'wide platform' Tim shows around 9:20. The new 'H-frame' is actually in the upper region of the midsole (mostly orange on this one). Look forward to Tim recovering, and providing more feedback.

have to agree with you that,,, gaviota 4 kinda like a brick,,, not sure how long i need to breakin. but the upper, heel collar, tongue are very comfy, any idea how long you need to brekin the 4? is gaviota 5 softer than clifton 8? also, base on how you compare about both 4 &5, I think I finally find the shoe I wan... my current favorite and daily shoes now is Hoka Kawana

I have been running in the Bondi 8’s size 10 1/2 even though my actual foot size is size 10 because of the narrow toe in the Bondi. I want to try the Gaviota 5 in size 10. Do you think the Gaviota is true to size? I am not able to try them on at a local store. 12:00

The kayano 30 is such a different shoe from what it has been. I've used kayano since 26 but can't use them anymore. To bad really liked the shoe but my feet just didn't like them

I personally tried on the 23 and G5 at a running store. Don’t quote me on any of this, all runners are different so you should really go to a store and try on the shoes to see which you like better. The drop between the G5 and the A23 is a big difference between 6 and I think 12 not 100% sure. I enjoyed the G5 more as it felt more soft and cushioned, not as soft as people were saying but they weren’t broken in so that is probably why. I didn’t mind the A23 but they were pretty firm, not in a bad way. I just prefer the G5. However, if you need a lot of stability, I am guessing the A23 might be a better option. Not sure about the k30 though. Would love to see someone else’s comparison for that as I currently own and will soon retire the k29

I haven't tried the 5, but I have an issue with Hoka changing from a late-stage meta-rocker to an early-stage meta-rocker! That is what I liked about the 3 and 4 and Hoka goes and changes it? Not happy!

When I went to my local running store to try on some different models as I was looking for a good shoe to work in as I am on and off my feet for 10hr in a machine shop. I tried on a few Brooks and New Balances and the Gaviota 5. I loved everything about the Gaviota except for it starting to roll way sooner than I would have liked too in my natural walking stride which is I think what you are referring to in them going to a early stage meta rocker. Definitely feels like it starts too early for me. If it wasnt so aggressive feeling that would have been a perfect shoe for me. Ended up choosing the Brooks Ghost 15 and they are nice and all but I think I need a lower drop shoe and that Gaviota was perfect in the heel toe drop. Ugh plus it doesn't help when one foot is 12.5 and the other a little shorter which is something I found out at the store when getting my foot scanned. If anyone has a chance to get your foot scanned to have a properly fitting shoe DO IT. It makes a huge difference. I always wondered why my right pinky toe would bump up against the toe box but my left never would. The Gaviota 5 had perfect stability without needing a insole too which also makes it painful that the damn early stage meta rocker ruins it. May have to try out the Brooks Ghost Max as it has a low drop too and it came out after I purchased my Ghost 15's.

@chasen432 Thanks for sharing your experience. And, yes, that's exactly what I mean about early-stage meta-rocker. I have the Arahi which does that and I don't like it. I will try to make my Gaviota 3's last as long as possible and keep looking on ebay for used ones, I guess.

They are well cushioned for a stability shoe. If you need a little extra stability with cushion than these are a good choice. Thanks for the question. I hope all is well with you. Have a great day. Stay safe.

@@wedgythewedges5489 from my experience, they feel kind alike the Cliftons, with the Cliftons being more narrow and more 'on a cloud.' Tighter in the heel for sure too.

@@RunTall Wanted to inform you and your viewers, like a lab rat, I've decided to keep the Gaviota 5's (while I also break in some Gaviota 4's) and plan to do a review comparing them after some time, with updates, etc. It's funny - right when I was about to write off the Gaviota 5 for being 'too soft' per my above comment, I gave them another chance. And low and behold..it kinda clicked. I think it's also important to wear your custom insoles in them for this 'click' to happen - and wear them for a few days without 'messing them up' if you want to return. But now I kinda like having a 'more firm' stability shoe, and then a 'softer' one. So I kinda give my feet the experience they are craving. I'm going to wear them more and really dive deep into which is better - but my other thought was, good luck finding the Gaviota 4 come 2024 - so if your feet are able to get use to any of these new #hoka models, its worth the shot. Cause finding the old models is a challenge. I speak from experience with the Kaha and what they did with the Kaha 2.
