Hobie Mirage Passport 12.0 | Hatch Upgrades for Extra Storage and Easy Accessory Installations

Follow along as we show you how to install a Vertical Rectangular Hatch in the center of the cockpit and 8" round hatches in the bow and stern of your Mirage Passport 12 fishing kayak. The rectangular hatch in front of the seat accepts a Rectangular Gear Bucket and makes a great storage area for fishing tackle or other items you need quick access to on the water. We decided to move the factory installed 8" round hatch up to the bow for another storage point and a place to rest our fish finder battery. Additionally, we installed an 8" Twist and Seal hatch in the aft cargo deck to yield in-hull access for installing a Power Pole Micro & UL 8' Spike.
Featured Accessories:
- Vertical Rectangular Hatch Kit, PN 77701801
- Rectangular Gear Bucket, PN 71709002
- 8" Twist and Seal Hatch Kit, PN 71702001
- Power Pole Micro & UL 8' Spike, PN 72020083
- Power Pole Micro Lithium Battery Pack, PN 72020185

    Great video. I just picked up two demo 2021 Passport 12’s from a dealer and just completed all of these modifications to both of them. About the only thing different I did was use a cordless jigsaw. All necessary cuts were easy to make. I went slow , being very careful not to make mistakes. I was done with all hatches for both boats in under 4 hours. Some people might be able to do it faster. I like the end result. Your video made my task easier. Thsnks

    I agree with you, sure, it can be done faster than the 4 hours, but it's best to take your time and ensure it is 100% neat and correct.

    Thank you ..I did this today thanks to watching this video many times I had the confidence to do this to my brand new passport 12...I'm not a handy man at all but thanks to your videos I've upgraded the hatch, added an anchor trolley, drive leach and side pockets ...soon I'll get the H bar and sidekicks ...I'm loving upgrading as much as the fishing ..

    The factory round hatch removal and what you can see once its gone says a great deal about the build quality. It's the same old story: cost doesn't necessarily equate to quality.

    Yeah, I was kind of disappointed when I saw that. Just "fishing" for my first kayak. Plus I wish that was how it came from the factory - rectangular + dual round hatches, instead of me having to cut my brand new "boat"...

    great way to make your yak flood. anyone used silicone as well as gasket? my mates yak took on heaps of water after hatch install also noticed two existing holes from the round hatch which weren't filled.

    I too was looking for them to use silicone sealer, surprised he didn't. The factory install for the round hatch apart from being a messy cut, also was without silicone. Just a question, if the factory did not seal it with silicone, and presuming they don't want the expense and bad reputation of thousands of kayaks being recalled because of taking on water, could your friend have slightly messed up the install of his hatch? I still would use silicone regardless though.

    Hatches cost money and parts and labor would be passed down to you. Almost any shop can perform this service for you at time of purchase, so what you’re asking is already an option.

    Now you know a little to why their other kayaks co$t more. They have those pre-installed of course. It is pretty crazy to pay $130 bucks for a few pieces of plastic. 🤷🏻

    Ill add this...I tried with a rotary tool (dremmel 4000 with a 535 or whatever kit) and I quit. The jigsaw with a fine tooth blade was much quicker, cleaner, and just better.

    There is no room to spare on the 12 once it's installed so unless that area of the 10.5 is identical i don't think it could .. but that's just a guess after fitting mine

    wondering what you used to cut that hole at the 1:49 mark lol im thinking a dremel or some kind of multi tool. this is good to see because people will realize the circle doesnt need to be absolutely perfect and some small errors will be just fine.

    Yes the wide flange and large surface of the gasket is fairly forgiving! In our factory we use a jig and a large roto-zip tool that cuts fast but in the same style as a dremel does.

    I'd say a small router would be a good method to cut a clean neat hole for the home DIY too. Hey, question, why doesn't the factory use any silicone to be extra sure the hatch is water tight? Also, where do you put the fish caught, I was thinking there might be a hatch space, but couldn't see one. You wouldn't want a fish on the deck flapping around and getting away.

    After doing this, I see there is what I can assume is my serial number where the plastic needs to be removed and the passport in the video has more holes for an 8" hatch than I do on mine

  • @HobieOfficial

    @HobieOfficial

    2 жыл бұрын

    Your primary serial number is located at the back of your hull, the number under the old hatch is a backup. Yes we did switch from an older 8" round hatch that had eight mounting screws to a better design that is stronger and using only 6 screws!

    So what Im seeing is Hobie saying "this should be done this way from the factory" for both the bungees and hatches.

    Yes you can. You may have to use an aftermarket transducer mount, depending on the model and where the transom mount adapter on the transducer sits. Best to contact your local Hobie dealer to assist you in selecting a fish finder unit.

    Why Not design the boat with standard & fully equipments options for customers to select instead of dealing with all of the modification. Just charge more for the fully equipped accessories.

    This is an entry level kayak, with less standard bells and whistles as standard. We are able to pass the cost savings onto the consumer. As with all Hobie kayaks, there's the option for upgrades and customization. Some of the other kayaks in our line fall into a premium price point category and are outfitted from the factory with more standard options at a higher price point.

    In other words, the passport was designed poorly because it's got virtually no storage compared to much cheaper Chinese made Kayaks. BTW, where do I fit my sounder transducer in the Passport? ;)

  • @HobieOfficial

    @HobieOfficial

    3 жыл бұрын

    The Passport 12.0 comes equipped with an 8" round hatch in the center of the cockpit, plus a bow recess with bungee and a generous cargo deck with bungee. This is plenty of storage for most, but for those looking to add more, Hobie has given our customers options. We knew this model would be a popular fishing platform for those looking for a quality fishing kayak at a reasonable price, which is why this model is factory equipped with a transducer cavity and mounting plate. Aftermarket transducer mounting plates that suit Lowrance side imaging transducers like the TotalScan, ActiveImaging 3-in-1 and TripleShot are available.
