Hobbomock | The Sleeping Giant

The hills of Sleeping Giant State Park in southern Connecticut are a popular place for hiking and outdoor recreation, but they have a mythical past. The Quinnipiac people once believed that they were once a stone giant called Hobbomock, who felt betrayed and insulted by the creatures of the earth, and in his rage wrought havoc upon the land. The people had no chance against an angry giant, but with some immortal help, they could stop Hobbomock before he destroyed all of creation!

I lived near here as a child, and my dad pointing out the sleeping giant to me is still a vivid memory even though I was so young, it made such an impression. I’m so happy to learn the story of the people who first lived in this region.

Native Myths need more love, they are very interesting. Giants in Europe are aggressive and violent, while these giants are calm and help mankind. I cant wait till to next vid.

Right on- I’ve hiked at Sleeping Giant State Park many times over the years with my friends, having grown up in and lived in CT most of my life. I live only a half hour drive from there still.

This myth is pretty tragic and it ist kinda fascinating to see that there are so many myths in which giants create or even become parts of the landscape!

Awesome videos as always, there are so many great stories to tell 👍. I actually was curious about a couple of things, one legend you guys briefly mentioned was the hookman, sounds pretty spooky, would love to hear more about that 🤘. And on a lighter subject a possible fun topic could be the Origins of Groundhog Day and Phil's shadow. But you guys are the experts and I'm always down to hear anything 👌, just wanted to put in my two cents :)

Sleeping Giant in CT has great hiking trails and was the first place in the United States where they did technical rock climbing (ropes pitons). There are also two caves there, one in which is called Dead Man's Cave because a relative of PT Barnum had lived and died there.

It's unbelievable how so many different cultures separated by time and oceans share the same common myth of someone far greater teaching us wisdom in the first time and then becoming enraged when finding out that humans have abandoned it. and how even more tell these two separately, gods or god becoming enraged for man abandoning his way, and some greater being first teaching us the basic skills of civilization. how can it be a coincidence? why would it be natural for us to believe in this way if it in reality all came from slow gradual process of self-learning? and tell me this: just how similar is the solution to Hobbomock's rampage to the one of Sekhmet's from ancient Egypt? Hobbomock was put to sleep by the spirit enchanting the oysters he ate with sleeping spell, Sekhmet by gods who tricked her into drinking lots of wine thinking it was blood.

These tales of Giants are not myth. To speak of pre Columbus America would go against modern academics. I did chuckle at the "before Europeans came to the land." How far back in time should we go? And at what point in time is one considered a native of the land?
