HM Queen Elizabeth II leaves Scotland for the final time

A bright, sunny afternoon, 13 September 2022, outside the High Kirk of St Giles, Edinburgh. Her Late Most Excellent Majesty's coffin - draped in the Royal Standard of Scotland and with flowers from the Balmoral estate - is carried by soldiers of The Royal Regiment of Scotland as she departs her northern kingdom for the last time. Among the soldiers is Ben Tubuna, from Rewa, Fiji, a distance of 9,788 miles away, on the other side of the world
Following behind is the Late Sovereign's daughter, the Princess Royal, Anne, who will accompany The Queen on her final journey by air to London, on board a C-17 Globemaster of the Royal Air Force.
The melody is "Flowers of the Forest", a famous lament for those who fell at the battle of Flodden on 9 September 1513. It is such a sacred melody that bagpipers will not practise it within hearing, and only play it on occasions such as this.
The dignified commentator (at 2:43) is Alastair Bruce.

She was the first monarch to die in Scotland since James V in the 1500s. Scotland may not be as fond of the monarchy as England is, but we were still saddened by her passing. Balmoral Castle was her favourite place in the world and it makes me glad that she died peacefully in a place that she loved, where she could relax and unwind and not be bothered by being the queen. Scotland shall likely never know another queen. Goodbye, Your Majesty.

Her mother was a Scot, and she always loved her mother's homeland and those things that Scotland is known for. She had a piper from the army wake her every day, and when his wife came down with terminal cancer, she had her doctors give the wife the best care that she could. Folks forget she is descended from the Scottish royal line, as well as the English. Flowers of the Forest always gets to me. The Scots sure do know how to mourn.

She did indeed love Scotland and - on a lighter note - chose to spend her holidays there during the months when many Scots go abroad for hot, dry weather! Some Scots have questioned the Queen's “Scottishness” but in fact she is related to Mary Queen of Scots via Henry VIII's sister Queen Margaret of Scotland, grandmother of Mary. Queen Margaret (Tudor) was the mother of Mary's father James V (1512-1542), whose crown was placed on the Queen's coffin on Monday afternoon during this service by the Duke of Hamilton Furthermore, according to National Records of Scotland, the Queen’s parents shared Robert II King of Scots as a common ancestor. Through her mother’s family, the Bowes-Lyons, Earls of Strathmore, she could trace her ancestry back through generations of Scottish nobility to Sir John Lyon, Thane of Glamis, who married Robert II’s daughter in the fourteenth century.

@billlee536 , if you know where your ancients were from, try spending as much time as you can in those areas, providing you have the extra time. My ancients were from all over Scotland, but I/we could only fit so much in during our fortnight (two week) tour. At least I was able to spend a couple nights on Skye where my mum+'s paternal family originated. Good luck. All the best. Slàinte Mhath

to be fair our late Queen was was the only Queen in our life's, it is hard to claim she is the greatest as although its been 122 yeas since our last reigning Queen, our late Queen Elizabeth's Gr Gr grandmother, Queen Victoria who until our late Queen was the longest ruling monarch. HM Queen Victoria i think could equally be considered Britain's greatest Queen Both queens were without doubt the best monarchs to reign in Britain. Both Queens loved Scotland and her people and identified with the Scots, as does HM King Charles III something previous and i suspect future monarchs have not and possibly will not. WE must not forget the other British Queen and indeed the very first monarch of Great Britain, HM Queen Anne 1707-1714, last of the Stuarts to reign who has been unfairly overlooked by history yet during her reign Britain was established and became a leading power within the European context. It was however under HM Queen Victoria that the British Empire began and lasted well over 100 years or so, which encompassed a quarter of the world. It is rather ironic that Kings are often accredited for their achievements etc but the Queens who ruled in their own right often sidelined but in reality the Queens were far better monarchs.
