History Talk: The Uttoxeter Canal

To town wide celebration, the Uttoxeter Canal opened in September 1811. Linking Uttoxeter to the Caldon Canal and onto Trent and Mersey Canal. It was hoped by many in the town that it would result in a revival of the Uttoxeter's fortunes. This never came to pass however as the canal was closed and filled in less than 40 year later. Today only small parts of it remain. This talk explores the interesting story this short-lived commercial failure. From its’ origins in trying to block the construction of a rival canal to its closure and partial conversion into a railway line.

Thanks for an interesting talk. I spent the first 13 years of my life in Uttoxeter, and used to wonder about the Wharf and the canal when cycling to school along Cheadle road.
