History Summarized: Spread of Christianity

Things I learned when making this video: 1) when your script goes beyond 4 single-spaced pages, you're heading into the danger zone 2) Gregorian Chants are awesome and you should totally listen to them, 3) editing always takes longer than you'd hope 4) self care is huffing frankincense for breakfast lunch and dinner and single-handedly sacking a levantine city!

They shouldn't be the same thing but the people in secular position, or anyone for that matter, should be pursuing truth, and find what is good/true/beautiful/ect. This should especially include religion, since that will shape the core of a person's beliefs and goals. The problem is many people don't consider others' arguments without an entire salt shaker. This isn't just with religion either. So many people won't take the time to consider a differing view/belief/argument/ect and consider what part they don't agree with. When one does, one can affirm their own belief and have a counter argument for the opposing side. OR they can find they don't have an answer better than their peers. In this situation one can search for an answer from the authority on the matter, in the case of religion the codified teachings of their faith, or find you may be wrong. Most of the time being wrong is not a bad thing. If you don't take a disagreement as a personal attack on your very being, it's a lot easier. Sorry for this going on so long, I like to talk about this sort of stuff and debate in general. If you're going to say something you might as well say it all.

The man who came to be known as Jesus, along with his disciples, were about practicing their faith on their own terms and not joining it with Rome's government mandated Pax Deorum. They did this partially because they based their faith on Judaism, which had been a sheltered, temple faith. This was what ticked off the Romans so much: Christ wouldn't add his new church to their state, making it impossible for them to have every deity in the empire on their side. Your Bible contains a line by Christ stating "render unto Caesar that which is owed to Caesar and render unto God that which is owed to God" If anything, you're being the heretic here, as is every other Vatican authoritarian who's tried to impose theocratic rule.

The latter condition is open to interpretation, but the former is quite unambiguous. So if Christians are out killing gays and people who work on weekends, then I'm sorry to say that they're "doing it right," and you'd be "called the least in heaven" to NOT commit these atrocities. But hey, who cares if you get called "least in heaven" as long as you get to heaven, amirite?

  • @BlackEpyon

@Ethan That does not negate the facts that 1) the first condition still applies regardless, and 2) homosexuality and working on weekends still carries capital punishment by stoning (not "death" in the hereafter"), whether you agree that his "laws" are righteous or not. Christ's supposed sacrifice and redemption does not provide any context that removes Christians of the imposed obligations of that verse. I am not changing the meaning of that statement, this is literally what it implies.

@Ethan Are you reading between the lines while ignoring the lines? You can take the "new covenant" and interpret it to mean "until all is accomplished," and theologically, that works just fine, but what does "until heaven and earth pass away" mean if heaven and earth are still here? This isn't just some social taboo here. Leviticus 20:13 "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; *they shall surely be put to death* ; their blood is upon them." Now, since you're refusing to acknowledge the ramifications, let me spell it out in black and white. Matthew 5:17 *Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets.* I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them. 18 For I tell you truly, *until heaven and earth pass away, not a single jot, not a stroke of a pen, will disappear from the Law* until everything is accomplished. 19 So then, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do likewise will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever practices and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.… This means, plain and simple, that if you call yourself a "follower of Christ," you are disobeying your Lord if you refuse to obey that law, or try to convince somebody else, as you are attempting to do now, that it's not as bad as it seems. It IS. This is an order for capital punishment, and it is still in effect.

The idea of a hypocritical god wasn't foreign to the Romans. The Roman pantheon didn't have trouble acknowledging that the gods were assholes. The problem came from the huge cultural cliff between the aristocratic and militaristic culture of the roman empire, and the egalitarian pacifistic christian cultures. The period from the first sightings of christian cults to the rise of medieval christian dogmas saw a massive amount of theological debate and huge political events that with the slightest bit of variance could have produced an entirely different christian religion than what came out of Rome.

I'm a bit late to the party, but if you see this, there may be something interesting in it for you! Relates to the point you made early in the video about the growth of Christianity and prosecution. I recently graduated university, and one of the courses I took towards the end when all my major reqs were done and I just needed misc credits was a course on religion as it applies to World Politics. I thought this was going to be a class to sleep during, but the professor held a fascinating perspective on how religions subconsciously appeal to people. There are a whole bunch of aspects to this, but one the most important was the ratio between personal sacrifice and the benefits of membership. For example, some religions have high barriers for entry, but also many benefits one joined. Think Amish; they require members to forgo a modern life in exchange for insanely strong community ties. On the other hand, many religions have a broad appeal and low barriers for entry, and are successful this way. However, personal sacrifice has a greater scope of effect than just the person who is doing the sacrificing. If outsiders see that certain members of their community are willing to pay a high price (in some cases, even their life!) in order to continue to follow their beliefs, this will raise the value of the religion in the eyes of the outsiders. So Christianity, which has a strong culture of self-sacrifice, was doubly benefited by their subjugation. There were also some interesting points made about the fundamental differences between Christians and Pagans at the time and how Christians had higher survival rates through the plagues that fell on Rome over the next few decades after the death of Christ, and how people took that to be divine protection, but I can't be bothered to find my notes on the stuff. The Romans were just brutal enough to raise the value of Christianity, but not brutal enough to wipe it out. This is why the best way to wipe out any movement is to quietly disappear important people and spread misinformation than to brutally crackdown. Fighting fire with fire never works.

Past Siddhartha Guatima (I think that was his name before changing it to Buddha), I really don't know much about Buddhism, or why it was in essence banished from its homeland of India and Nepal. While we are on the subject, a video on Jainism and Sikhism would be cool too. I think what sold me on the whole religion was your statement at the end which Sheen said to just let people believe what they want to believe and at the end of the day there's truths in every belief and in order to get together, we have to dig them up. Basically... "UNDERSTANDING" lmao. He was also known for supporting protestants. It's a very old show, but a lot of stuff he says is relevant. It's so cool reading about saints and seeing that "four gospel" thingy expanded upon. Another reason was hearing a priest recently outright say "don't focus on what other people think of God... yeah a couple things i wanna add as i've gone to intense Christian school's with theology and philosophy classes and i attend Greek Orthodox Church and i'm working on converting (but i'm still only a high school senior so my knowledge isn't quite all encompassing…) so: 1) Arias and the Trinitarian vs. non-Trinitarianism was a huge deal back in the day, so in a big get together at the Council of Nicea, they hammered out the Nicean Creed, a 3 paragraph~ long creed pretty much outlining the framework of Christianity. we say every now and again in church. It included establishing that the Trinity is indeed the correct way to go, and that Jesus was fully divine and fully human (more on that later). In school we were taught that the Trinity is made up 3 distinct but harmonious beings that exist independently but also dependently in a way thats sort of beyond human understanding. i spent 3 years studying that stuff just to reach the "ur human u can't QUITE get it ever." the course pretty much got prefaced with "LOL GOOD LUCK", anyways. also they kicked Arias out (i think they killed him?) 2) according to the Father of my church, Jesus was born on December 25th (or January 7th in the Greek calender) and we know this because the Jews kept über careful track of dates, and that habit transfered over to the Church which transfered to the Greek Orthodox, and the Greek Orthodox's kept almost all their traditions largely intact for a thousand years, like using the Greek Calender, as they were pretty much in stasis under the Ottoman Turks until like the 19th century. i don't take Father Joseph's word as serious as, like let's say, verified historical documents, but i mean he did study years to reach his position and bas constantly been doing research on the history of the Church his life so…food for thought? 3) The question of Jesus' divinity and humanity is something my school also spent a lot of time on, and the answer we arrive at is basically: Jesus was fully human, but didn't have the pesky Natural Sin as He wasn't born of a man and a woman, just a virgin and the Holy Spirit. He was also fully divine, giving Him the power to resist sin inhumanely well. so, He could've sinned, if He so choose to, hence the temptations in the desert, but He just didn't. 4) my Ethics class this year is focusing on the ethics and morals surrounding Christianity (so i've been reading a lot of Kant and C.S. Lewis…) and the base conclusion we come to at the end of every single discussion is: at the core of the Gospels, is an ideal way to live regardless of whether or not you believe in God or even objective morality. turn the other cheek, do unto others…, help the poor as they're always be here, etc. etc.. It's all great, fascinating stuff. 4) also we learned some FUCKED UP ways the romans killed the christians. a small list: tied down and covered in lard/wax stuff to be human candles for Nero's garden, wrapped in Lady Gaga-esque meat suits and tossed into an arena with lion or wild dogs, drowned in bigs vats of burning oil, and then the tamer stuff like crucifixions, poison, limbs broken and left out in the middle nowhere, eyes gouged out, etc etc. 5) my church choir warms up with chants like you used in the background. once they get in tune, it's worth waking up extra early to hear. welp, that's all i can recall from memory. sorry if i skewed some facts as i wrote this all from memory. it'd be cool some more learned Greek Orthodox Christians can help me out here. love the videos Blue! you're really good about summarising huge events into these relatively short videos, and you pretty much include all the core events. now it's back to math homework for me.

I LOVE what you are saying about Jesus and his humanity vs. divinity. In all honesty we could argue for hours on weather Jesus was able to sin and both sides are valid. I agree Jesus was able to sin, but chose not to, and Jesus was DEFINITELY human, like when he got frustrated with the merchants in front of the temple.

Hey Blue. From what I remember from my theology, Saint Nick has two major things that lead to what he became today: The whole presents thing refers back to his youth, when human trafficking was legal. It was illegal for one to buy off another's debt, allowing loan sharks to charge outrageous interest so they could fund their sex slave businesses. Having a reality check, a young Nick took his father's money/his allowance and snuck bags of gold in the back windows of people's houses (as, again, legality was an issue). However, there were occasions where Nick found that the guard and loan shark arrived early, so he'd drop the bag down the chimney as not to get caught. Now we have presents rather than slavery gold. The second one was how he dressed, but for that, we need to look at his early adulthood. Becoming a priest, Father Nicholas was sent to manage the church in a poor town. As children would often be found mutilated by Wolves at the edge of town, one of his duties was to pray over them (funeral style). However, in doing so, he discovered that not all the children were dead and that the townsfolk would leave their sick children there because they were too poor to get medicine and feed everyone. So, in the dead of night, Father Nicholas and his nuns went out and claimed all the abandoned children left alive and turned his church into an orphanage, while (imagine) never once holding the parents responsible or preventing them from seeing their kids. Fast forward a few years, now Bishop Nicholas was on his way to Rome, being called for potential popehood. Wearing the customary red gown, he was on his way when he met with a prison warden, a loan shark Nick fought against as a child. He had a career change due to human trafficking being illegal, and made up bogus charges to lock Bishop Nicholas up to fulfill a grudge, though never reporting it to avoid a release date. When the children of his orphanage grew up, they revolted against the prison, exposing the Warden's corruption and freeing their second father, now dressed in a red gown, laced in white, with a long white beard. These are the reasons St. Nicholas became a patron saint of children and generosity. And to remind future generations never to fear doing the right thing, he became a symbol for a celebration that, until atheism stole it in a more direct way that they have accused Catholics of doing, meant "The birth of a new hope"

@F.u.c.k Go.ogl.e My goodness.... you are a sad sad little person. Even by listening to Blue at the end of the video, Christianity has done waaay more good than bad my guy. Basic research says that the brain naturally focuses on the bad than the good. Everything people strongly believe in lead into war; sooo many people died because of money; but we always forget that money did way more good than bad. Socialism is a beautiful concept, but always fails because of people's actions with it. Are you going to say that fighting for rights (slavery, racism, etc) is bad because people died for it? You're sad self is just hostile to the possibility of a higher being, and according to math and science, it's not irrational to believe that a higher being exists. You say that we're sheep blinded by lies, but if religion is meant top trick us, they're doing good by tricking us (billions of people are 'tricked' into thinking that their actions have consequences, which would make you act better to all) heres a parable: A sheep with no divine or moral rules would understandably do whatever it wants; as well as having existential thoughts like they're meaningless compared to the massive scale of time in the universe. But a "blinded" sheep who believes that it may get to go to a bigger barn after it dies would try to act good (LITERALLY COMMON SENSE MY NINJA). - now replace blinded with hopeful, sheep with person, and a bigger barn with heaven.

I'd like to add a few things about Martin Luther. First, it was never an official practice of the Church to *sell* indulgences. An indulgence is an act performed for the remission of temporal sin. This has to be in conjunction with the Sacrament of Penance, ie what we Catholics call confession. An indulgence is only good if you go to confession, go to Mass, and receive the other sacraments. The Catholic Church has never taught that an indulgence removes time from your debt in purgatory. That's actually a little outside of her jurisdiction, contrary to popular belief, but that didn't stop unscrupulous ne'er-do-wells from selling bits of fake relics to gullible fools who were too afraid of death and too lazy to make up for their actions on their own. Second, I will give credit where credit is due and say that Martin Luther was right in some cases. The biggest thorn in Germany around the time was paying taxes to the Church for the construction of churches in Italy. It was perfectly justifiable for the German Christians to protest because their money was going to churches most of them would never see. Third, Martin Luther's influence damaged Christianity. He never reformed anything and probably made matters worse. The whole point of Christianity was to have one, unified, universal Church. It's not really just a 'matter of opinion,' if your opinion causes approximately 30,000+ divisions 500 years later. Martin Luther was stubborn, arrogant, and had the support of German princes with their own political and personal reasons to leaven the Church of Rome. Luther got away with a lot of things because of this support. He turned Christianity on its head rather than reform anything from within. Francis of Assisi and others before Luther were far more successful and didn't start their own break away church. Luther allowed a German noble to marry a much younger girl, commit bigamy, and lie to subjects about it. Luther was anti-intellectual, contradictory, vulgar, and anti-semitic. Not to mention, he excited German princes and nobles to slaughter peasants in the numerous revolts that were instigated by Luther when he practically invited them to interpret the bible for themselves and stir trouble with the nobles. And then Luther had the audacity to be shocked when all of the new churches started popping up on his account. There was indeed, sadly, corruption, but none of his early writings make much noise of it after his trip to Rome and only later when he was rallying for his distinct congregation did Luther make a big hoopla over them. Fourth, the bible was available in other languages even in the time of Luther. We have fragments of gospels in Old English by Bede the Venerable (mid-700's). Cyril and Methodius had a translation in Old Slavonic (9th century). There's also pieces of Old High German also in the mid-700's. It wasn't that bible was banned from the common folk. Education became sorely lacking after the fall of Rome and most people couldn't read. They couldn't read their own language, let alone Latin. Bibles were also made out of very expensive material prior to the printing press. It cost a village to make one bible. Problems happened people who took up translating things without Church approval. You can translate it, but you have to get Church approval and they make sure everything is green-lit. Otherwise you'll get lost in the confusion of translation and re-interpretation. Like how Martin tried to gut much of the bible, including but not limited to: Ruth, the Ten Commandments, Esther, Jonah, Job, Ecclesiates, Letter to the Hebrews, and James, all on Luther's personal opinion and he would hear nothing about counterarguments to his objections to these books and letters.

I think it might be cause Paul had to deal with Greek philosophy of the time which was indeed a bit confusing. I must admit that out of the all denominations I find Orthodoxy the most balanced in its dealing with mystery and practicality but I think all denominations might have it right in some things, but lack in others. Folks keep bashing Chatolism but I think it arises mostly from "flesh", pettiness or something. I don't believe in sanctity of Pope, but as a system it seems to have an understanding about the grandness of God and also of important of unity to certain degree. I think there are more proper ways to judge people than their beliefs. It is the fruit of their beliefs which usually reveal weaknesses in actions.

As a Catholic I really do appreciate this. To give some further explanation about certain things (on a video 2 years old sorry), The Catholic church has a council for exegesis, which means to pull out the meaning of the bible, and once an agreement is made, it becomes a part of the doctrine of the Church (most if not all of this has already been done). Each person is encouraged to read the bible, and interpret it and apply it to their own lives. As long as it doesn't contradict the Church's doctrine (formed by centuries of councils), each person can interpret the bible for himself. Also, the whole selling of indulgences thing was horrendously miscommunicated at the time of Martin Luther, which understandably led to the 95 theses. The practice of indulgences means that, with 3 prerequisites met, a certain action can be done to lessen the time in purgatory, them being: confession, receiving the Eucharist, and saying prayers for the intentions of the Pope, all to be done within 8 days of each other. THEN an action, such as spending time in adoration, or at the time of Martin Luther, contributing to the support of the Church, could be done to lessen the time in purgatory. Again, this concept was very misunderstood by many Catholics and clergy at the time, and the selling of indulgences was widespread. TL;DR: As long as you don't contradict established church doctrine as a catholic you're good to interpret the bible, and indulgences aren't supposed to be sold, and the clergy and people at the time didn't completely understand what the practice was supposed to be.

Christianity (as an umbrella term) kiiiiinda got messed up right about when it became a political power. Christ was kinda "dude, stop trying to make me a king, already! I don't care about that crap!" and instead more about "y'all are really messed up and need to recognize that, but I gotcha covered (no, really. Literally. Don't freak out!) Stick with me, kid and I can show you how to not be a jerkface." He also had some HARSH (and kinda metal) words for the religious authorities. It wasn't so much them having different interpretations, as them having different interpretations when it suited them specifically (and screwing everyone over with stuff like various temple taxes and sabbatical add-ons, but actively found loopholes for themselves).

His words to Simon in the Getsemane garden kinda go against it. Simon drew a dagger (Some translations mention a sword, but I'm a bit dubious that a poor civilian fisherman would have owned one, whereas literally everybody would have had a dagger or a knife, and a fisherman would well have had a large one that would even have approached a seax in size.) and struck one of the people that had come to arrest Jesus, but Jesus stopped him, healed the wounded guy and told Simon that 'He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword'. I'd like your citation for the bit where Jesus encourages his disciples to go on a murderous rampage, and I can provide citation for the aforementioned bit if necessary. Jesus said that ''he who is not with me, is against me', but that is not quite synonymous with 'murder the living sunlight out of them'.

Ah, that explains it. Got to love out-of-context citations. To be fair though, Christianity is not the only thing that suffers from it. Politicians, other religious texts (Qu'ran being the obvious prime example, but others such as Asatru are subject to that as well) and perhaps most bafflingly, scientists all suffer from varying degrees of that kind of stuff. Brings to mind a comic strip handling exactly that issue, I'll leave a link. www. smbc-comics .com/comics/20090830.gif

Ah yes, it is common syndrome of taking one verse outside of context. I think it is always sometimes more holier to see Atheist and Christian actually calmly researching The Bible without bit-size arguments. At least in those occasions people tend to become wiser. Another problem which a bit irks me is to try reflect some events or people to modern equivalents without proper reason or context. For example equaling OT's "godless" to modern atheist is far-fetched cause most of the ancients believed in certain forces and these forces drove or encouraged acts. Gods were usually also those who made judgements about person's acts. So if one's personal judge had twisted view of justice, expect them to do some bad stuff. Modern atheist's are most likely ready to approve most of the moral guidelines and are more baffled about some irksome interpretations which even most Christians are irked. Or simply atheists have trouble to believe in something which they cannot see and exactly prove, which in sense is not unhealthy approach, even Bible commends people who have open minds to ideas expressed but still make sure they hold some salt in them. I think Biblical "belief" of the ancients was more nuanced than just believing in entity A or B. It seemed to also be interested in what kind of deity is one actually following. Accept cruel god, become cruel person. Accept too permissive god, become too permissive. Accept fair and balanced god, become balanced person. I think it is not waste of time for atheist to figure out the character of God from The Bible, even if they don't have actual belief cause it might transform them. And if they ever meet God, at least they can agree with His terms.

Me at the start of this video: Neat, I'm gonna learn some things. Me, at the end of this video: My brain has been assaulted by the most ultimate weapon of all... philosophy. (Philosophy's just really confusing, man).

Excellent video! It’s a great introductory piece for the history of Christianity. That said, I would recommend viewers to go further than here, as there’s many things that are simplified for times sake. Can’t cover it all in 20 minutes, can we folks? God bless y’all! Great work on the video!
