    Fan fuct: Augustus respected Agrippa so much as both a (best) friend and an Allie,that when Agrippa died rather than placing his remains in a personal grave or inside(Agrippas) Pantheon,he placed them inside his OWN Mausoleum,his personal grave.Just this act can show how much Octavianus loved his best friend Marcus. Again,a low class man(Agrippa wasn't of royalty) was buried together with the EMPEROR OF ROME. Now that's respect.

    "There are two worlds here. There's my world, which is the movies, and there's this other world that has been created, which I say is the parallel universe-the licensing world of the books, games and comic books. They don't intrude on my world, which is a select period of time, [but] they do intrude in between the movies. I don't get too involved in the parallel universe." Lucas himself. There's waaaaaaaaay more where that came from. He never considered anything in the EU canon. That doesn't mean any of it is bad. It was just never totally canon. Hell, the only thing that actually changed position in the canon was The Clone Wars, because it's now officially primary canon.

  • @fuzzydunlop7928

    @fuzzydunlop7928

    5 жыл бұрын

    Canon is subjective. If people simply decide not to adhere to them and choose their own canon, then they have literally no say in the matter since the material has already been released into the ether. So, because they hold the rights to financially profit off of the franchise, they suddenly have the authority to dictate the lore? I beg to differ. Once a creative work enters the consciousness of the people it ceases to be within the sole control of the creator or rights-holders in terms of how the public perceives it - there is no law which dictates how one must feel or think regarding an intellectual property. I'm restoring the canon and returning it to you - the people.

  • @fuzzydunlop7928

    @fuzzydunlop7928

    That said, Revan was in a deleted scene from the Clone Wars which - going with the inherently limited and counter-productive orthodox view of 'canon' - means there is still very much the possibility of it being recognized as 'canon' - though my point is that what Lucas or Disney dictates in terms of lore is totally irrelevant and the greatest trick they pull is making the fandom believe they actually have to listen to them at all.

    One little problem: George Lucas doesn't know the difference between a democracy and a republic. He thinks they're the same when they're not and perpetuated the misconception with the prequels. The reasons why Augustus Caesar was able to turn the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire was because he used bigger-army diplomacy and got the people on his side. He knew how win the common people over as did Julius Caesar. Palpatine makes one speech and somehow the Senate goes along with it, even though he looked like Death and showed no proof to back up his case. Either he was able to use the Force to sway them, or everyone's that blind and stupid. If he had stormtroopers positioned at every senator's platform and hold them at gunpoint to declare him emperor, then that would have been far more badass and far more believable at the same time.

    In international parlance, a republic is just any state without a monarch as head of government. A republic can be democratic, like the US or Switzerland, or not, like North Korea. Conversely, there are democratic non-republics, like the UK. In the US, a republic is a form of representative democracy, as opposed to direct democracy. But it is a democracy nonetheless.

  • @KTChamberlain

    @KTChamberlain

    5 жыл бұрын

    Nowhere in the US Constitution does the word democracy appear. The key difference between a democracy and a republic is that in a democracy it's majority rules, in a republic, the law protects the individual from the majority. Bottom line: America is not a democracy, it's a republic with checks and balances.

    Okay Blue, two issues with this summary. One, you forget to mention that Augustus pretty much set the standard for how emperors keep power, which is aggressive territorial expansion, and also that he forcefully had to stop this due to disastrous campaigns into Germany which cost him a large chunk of his army. It's Augustus who sets the standard of emperor at 'needs to conquer something' that causes so many problems later, as ever emperor has to prove themselves by trying to take something. It's also why so many parts of the empire fall apart later, and why it becomes basically ungovernable by the third century. For example, when the praetorians kill Claudius, a man with no political or military experience, he immediately sets off to go conquer Britain because his position is so untenable. Furthermore, by the time of the third century there are no more civilian emperors, and by which I mean all of them are generals currently involved in military conquest, and by that point the emperor becomes anyone who is proclaimed the emperor by his troops. More on that in point two. Second, you fail to mention that it's Augustus who fails to fix the very problem that's going to doom the empire, that of succession. Because Augustus never set up laws for how power is meant to be transferred due to his own fears of someone killing him and taking power once he did so, the empire never actually manages to deal with a problem that is going to doom it over and over again. Augustus knew that if he told everyone who his successor was going to be, that it would create a possible power base for that person, and it would possibly cause them to remove him. Augustus, especially in his later years after the death of three legions in germany, pretty much was a paranoid lunatic who saw enemies in ever corner and didn't know who to trust, which is why the matter of succession doesn't get resolved. This means that every emperor that dies has no real way of setting up an heir, which doesn't actually get resolved until the reforms during the time of Constantine. As such, every time an emperor dies, it sets off purges and sometimes civil war, as is the case with the death of Caligula where the praetorian guard turn the only person without any political experience into their new emperor, and it's also why the death of Nero set up civil war. It's also why the third century has something like 50 emperors, because no real legitimate manner of succession was ever officially established. This results in creating a situation where by the third century, the time of everything going to hell in a handbasket, the emperor becomes whoever is proclaimed emperor by his troops, which means emperors get proclaimed constantly, and they're all possibly legitimate because Augustus never bothered to create a manner of succession for his new empire. Essentially, it's impossible to discuss Augustus without mentioning these two points, because of how extremely important it is to everything that comes later.

Seeing as how the Pax Romana is a thing it’s a little extreme to call these things set up by Augustus as doomed to fail. Of course they contributed to Rome’s instability later on but other things did as well.

    Livia didn’t kill anyone. That is just slander propagated by the gossiper Suetonius. It was normal for people to die suddenly. Augustus lived an an unprecedented 75 years anyway. He outlived all his heirs. Tiberius wasn’t that bad. He was a scholarly emperor who was reluctantly given power. Augustus hated him and only made him his heir since everyone else died. He also had a huge chip on his shoulder since he wasn’t a direct blood descendant of Augustus. He had to divorce his wife for Julia. He left Rome for Capua and all the lies about his depravity were fueled by the aristocratic Suetonius. He left Rome stable and with a full treasury.

    This is good introductary video. I thought I would mention a few things that you missed. 1:39 you mention that he ditched the title of Triumvir, technically that office had lapsed in 33BC and since then he was consul but he had been acting as if he had the power of the triumvirs. Which didn't go down well. In 28-27BC he reppealled or 'usefully amended' all of the acts of the triumvirs to delegitimise that aspect of his power and instead make all of his new laws and acts legitimate as a consul. Also his imperium of over the provinces was granted for 10 years in 28BC. 2:00, The Princeps Senatus meant that he would speak first in the senate, thats it. it was the power he had as consul that allowed him to make 'edicts' and he could still use popular assembles to make laws. 'Stacking the senate in his favour' is kind of misunderstanding the Roman senate, because the senate technically had no powers other than religious. Augustus copuld make laws whether everyone in the senate hated him or not, and based on the evidence quite a few of them didn't like him, such as Caepio, Egnatius Rufus, Asinius Pollio, etc. 2:12 Although he never changed any core institutions he did change the nature of those institutions. The most important of which was that he changed the nature of the Cursus Honorum from being one of competative oligarchy to be an aristocracy of service. that is to say rather than noble Roman families competing with each other as they climb the magistarial ladder, Augustus maximised the number of people going through the cursus honorum so that he had an army of noblemen who could carryout their services to the Roman state, as proconsuls, legates, etc. 3:07 That is basically the arguement that Suetonius made, that although we got an emperor, the end wresult was a net benefit. 3:21 I am sorry to say but I think you misunderstood the situation, Gallus was accused of conspiring against Augustus after Augustus had a falling out with him. The senate then said that he was to be tried found guilty of treason, Gallus took his own life to make sure his property was not confiscated. I have read an inscription of Gallus' about his campaign into Nubia and its basically, Gallus whose a good guy invaded Nubia for Augustus who is also a nice guy. 3:40 That is not quite true, in multiple occasions during the 20'sBC Augustus again and again ran into trouble, the Spolia Opima affair, the Caepio Conspiracy, Messala Corvinus resinging as Prefect of Rome, Egnatius Rufus, his near death in 23BC and his stepping down from the consulship in 23 and the subcequent republican resurgence after that was very... shaking. If Augustus died in 23BC then the monarchy would have died with him. It was only after 19BC when he got the power of a Consul and then in 18BC that he renewed the imperium over the provinces that he finally started to get the upper hand and return to the position of absolute power that he had held 31BC. I hope that was helpful and I look forward to watching more of your videos soon.

    You forgot to mention that Augustus started off his career by purging anyone who stood as a potential rival. He started off with rich senators and eventually worked his way up to Lepidus and Antoninus. This was in stark contrast to his uncle Julius Caesar who was actually a pretty cool guy that pardoned all of his former enemies. They decided to repay him by stabbing him to death so I guess Augustus was pretty smart in that regard.

Tacitus is known for including quite a lot of rumors in his works.Which brings me to the eventual heir, Tiberius: The man definitly had his shortcommings, especially in regards to judging other peroples nature, but he probably was Romes most competent General after Agrippas death, was verry well educated and a competent ruler of the empire.
