    9:15 interesting factoid: Hadrian's wall had a moat on the southern side, facing _away_ from the unoccupied territory. "Why?" do you ask? Because the wall was designed to thwart raids rather than halt invaders, and the Celts were crazy-in-love with cattle rustling, _(Seriously, several Irish legends have epic heroes fight wars over a single damn cow)_ Yet while some cows could getting over the wall in some places, it would NOT be happening while chest-deep in water. Interesting factoid #2: the Romans didn't occupy further north of the wall because the main food source up there was livestock due to the hilly terrain (hence the cattle fixation) and the Romans needed copious amounts of grain to keep their troops provisioned. It was a similar problem in germany, where the biggest hangup toward conquest wasn't the Germans (even though they were a damn big problem), it was the lack of any real infrastructure east of the Rhine. The Romans loved to co-opt pre-existing institutions rather than build their own from scratch, but the Germans didn't really have any they could tap into. It's a stunning testament to Roman military prowess that it was logistics rather than foreign power that determined most of the borders of their empire.

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@camramaster It's true that if the Germans, Norse, or Nomadic tribes east of germania had more developed infrastructure, the empire could have gone a great deal further. Yet there was only so much territory Rome could rule before sheer distance put a halt to their expansion. For example, they never occupied the extremely developed and lucrative cities of Parthia (even though they could ransack the Parthian Capitol at will at the hight of their power) because it took months for the emperor to organize a campaign out east, months to travel there, months to actually fight, and months to return, assuming that nothing went wrong (it's a testament to Roman efficiency and roadways that they were able to do so _that quickly)._ And during all that time, important matters were being neglected in the Emperor's absence, or simply decided without him. And to be fair to the "primitive" northern barbarians, they didn't have much to work with; the nomads were nomadic for a reason (few resources on the plains) while germania and Scandinavia were chocked with dense Forests that heavily deterred agriculture. Pretty much any culture that _could_ develop advanced infrastructure at that time _had_ developed it already. Sorry for the rant: I love using any excuse to talk about history.

I do also agree that he could have been playing some 4D chess trying to depower the senate through these demonstrations

    I actually got into the past lives stuff because I've had a dream since I was little that repeats from time to time and carries me to specific places. I started and ended in places I had never been and asked questions about things Id never heard about and nobody could explain. Some of it I've only found out what it was as an adult. But then its also said that surviving twins and survivors of near death experiences are particularly close to that stuff and I'm both and basically started my life with that recipe before having the first 3 years of my life riddled with such serious febrile seizures with a lack of immune system to match for a perfect storm and I was declared ad almost declared dead a lot. There were a lot of times they didn't think Id come back, several I came back after they gave up, one notable instance my mom punched a nurse in the face getting to me after they gave up and then tried to stop her before standing directly between my mother and my body, a couple out of body experiences and having dreamt of my sister from the beginning before asking my mom about her and finding out she died in utero and hardly anyone knew she had existed(and she hadn't planned on telling me but then I asked which she didn't plan for)... So a whole lot of weird went into that and honestly? The older I get the less often I have the dream. I think its every couple years or so at this point? Its more terrifying than interesting as there is a portion that has people coming up onto the shores of the us and then mushroom clouds etc... So my mom used to think(in life: and in conversations I wasn't supposed to be listening in on because my mom also followed the philosophy of not teaching this stuff to children) it might be a combination of past and future meshed into one disjointed dream. As an adult I learned there are people who believe that time exists all at once and that is why some people dream in both past and future. Personally I think when you connect to this level within yourself where you connect with yourself or whatever else you wanna call the depths of whathaveyou that its more simpler and more complicated than that. I think cell memory, a proven concept, is more plausible and people get it from ancestors. I think its possible large events that cause emotional trauma, particularly to many people at once, can also resonate to those open to it. Ironically children find there way to that easiest, fostering the idea children are closer to past lives than adults. Yet adults who have had near death experiences also often find this more easily. With kids you don't teach them because then they start to take there dreams and themselves too seriously. Have to let them be kids and wait for the developmental stages where such abstract or "magical thinking" as psychiatrists call it today(which is a crack at pagans more than fantasy but it basically means there still at the stage where they think santa is real if you tell them so and can hold this belief even when they see direct evidence against it: also part of the reason religion is bad to teach children. They never learn to separate morality from religion and that can be used against them later(usually by religious leaders in there same religion but can be used outside that in some cases as well: basically it makes people more gullible and that's bad- religion is for adults and teens who are interested in exploring to find what fits them etc, but not kids because that is dangerous and makes them more vulnerable to manipulation using religion or growing to hate it and deciding all religion is bad: especially when that religion teaches that other religions are inherently bad with nothing worth understanding in the first place but instead as some undefined evil hiding in the shadows like generally isnt true). Anyway. I'm tired and rambling. Point being. Past lives stuff is actually more interesting when you look at it from different points of view. Like spiritual and science and then see if and where they fit etc. Sometimes you learn science has found it is different but easy to see why people thought a certain way. Sometimes it's spot on and sometimes people were wrong entirely though not on the past lives thing, interestingly enough. It is, indeed, a fascinating subject. I doubt blue has gotten into it. He would probably be geeking out about being present in spirit during those events in a past life and wondering if he could use it to unearth lost knowledge or some shit. Lol At least if what we see is his genuine personality anyway.

    Great video. But I take issue with your description of Nero. When the fire happened, it’s recorded that he was away from Rome but when he heard news of the fire he sent forces to immediately try and save the city. Popular history likes to portray characters as either black or white which is never the case

  • @Smeghead76
    @Smeghead765 жыл бұрын

    3:35 That's odd, since what I've read on the subject - and granted, it's far from exhaustive or definitive - says that Nero's location during the Great Fire was known. According to Tacitus, he was in Antium when the fire started and when word of the fire reached him, he immediately travelled to Rome in order to direct firefighting and relief efforts. And yes, he did take advantage of the situation to rebuild Rome the way he wanted to (especially with a brand new palace that would have covered a third of the city), but there's no real evidence that he started the fire. Don't forget, that contemporary accounts of early Rome mostly come from the senatorial/equestrian class, who were more than willing to slip in a little slander for Emperors they hated (looking at you, Suetonius), and their accounts should be taken with a grain of salt unless corroborated from other sources. Caligula also was a victim of this; not that either Nero or Caligula were particular _good_ Emperors, but they _probably_ weren't _quite_ as bad a contemporary writers make them out to be. 5:20 Really? Going with that line? I'll start off by saying that while, yes, Christians _were_ executed by being thrown to wild animals, it was not something that applied to them and them alone. It was called _damnatio ad bestias_ and was the punishment for a number of crimes. There is no reliable evidence to suggest that there were any executions of Christians at the Flavian Amphitheatre and there is precisely _one_ contemporary account which claims that Christians were thrown to lions, and that was from a _Christian_ writer. On the other hand, there is a fair amount of evidence to suggest that early Christians were quite willing to exaggerate the amount of persecution they were supposedly being subjected to, not to mention that reliable evidence only exists for persecution by imperial decree - as opposed to mob violence or persecutions instituted by provincial governors - a grand total of twice under Valerian and Diocletian. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damnatio_ad_bestias, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution_of_Christians_in_the_Roman_Empire)

    The period from the beginning of Nerva's reign, to the end of Marcus Aurelius one is called by historians as "Pax Romana", it was the apex of roman civilization, stability, prosperity and freedom (slavery in that time had a different meaning than today) were equaly distributed.

    Did slavery have a different meaning back then? I mean at the end of the day the bottom line is both in roman times and today if your the property of someone else you were a slave. Roman slaves went through periods where they did have more legal freedoms than say the infamous african-american slaves and being a slave in roman wasn't considered something biological but I think its a stretch to say slavey meant something different in rome than it does to us.

    Domitian is severely underrated, as the people and army loved him and he was literally the only roman emperor to try fixing the rapid inflation and succeed for a time along with a more or less successful reign. He was tyrannical and liked to ignore the senate's existence in decision making though, which really angered the senators and cue assassination.

    Quick note on the Jewish War: most of the Jews were already living outside of Judea at the time as a result of the Hellenistic period. Some of the defenders of Jerusalem were sent as slaves to Rome (and the Jews of Rome today can still trace their specific ancestry to them!), but most of the general population stayed. In fact, after the Kitos War, Hadrian had many of the Jews of the Diaspora repatriated to Judea, only to betray us again by building a temple to Jupiter on the Temple Mount. This led to the Bar Kochba revolt, the bloodiest of all the Roman-Jewish wars in which hundreds of thousands died. At this, the Romans forbade the Jews from entering Jerusalem and spitefully renamed the province Syria Palaestina after the ancient Philistines. That was it for a while, but the Sanhedrin kept operating out of Yavne and later Tiberias. In the last big revolt, the Jews with Persian assistance began building a Third Temple but were stopped short when the Byzantines retook Judea. By this point, the Jews of Judea were only a small minority of the Jewish population worldwide, but Judea remained majority-Jewish or nearly so until being almost wiped out in the First Crusade. A small but visible community called the Old Yishuv remained present until the Napoleonic Wars, when diaspora Jews began returning in larger numbers, leading to the Zionist movement in the late 19th century.
