Most students of history have only a passing familiarity with the Islamic Golden Age in the Greater Middle East, from about 750 to 1258. Advancements in medicine, algebra and astronomy; influential figures like Avicenna and Averroes: these asides in the traditional story of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance only gloss the surface of one of the most important periods of world history.
This crucial 500-year history was headquartered in Baghdad but impacted the wider world. Our course, “The History and Achievements of the Islamic Golden Age,” tells the story and the accomplishments of this great period in human civilization. Taught by acclaimed lecturer Eamonn Gearon, these 24 remarkable lectures offer brilliant insights into the Islamic Golden Age. The philosophers, scientists, inventors, and poets of the Abbasid Empire paved the way for the Renaissance and continue to affect our world, and The History and Achievements of the Islamic Golden Age will forever change your perspective on world history.
The Abbasid Empire, which ruled the Middle East as well as much of Northern Africa and Central Asia in much of the Middle Ages, is a bridge between the ancient and modern worlds. The Abbasid Empire was an international, multicultural hub of trade, travel, education, art, science, and much more. Just a few of the many events and achievements of the era include: Advancements in mathematics, including the birth of algebra and new insights into geometry and trigonometry.
The Abbasid Empire also saw the origins of the scientific method, along with the development of chemistry, physics, and astronomy as discrete fields of inquiry. The Islamic Golden Age contributed to the invention of the modern “teaching hospital” and a medical encyclopedia that served Europe for the next 600 years.
Eamonn Gearon also uncovers the Islamic Golden Age’s development of ontological philosophy that served future Jewish, Christian, and Muslim theologians concerned with theology and the relationship between faith and reason. The epicenter of the age was Baghdad and its House of Wisdom, the world’s preeminent center for learning, translation, and original research at the time. Thanks to the House of Wisdom, scholars, scientists, artists, and thinkers flourished.
The Abbasid Empire was a highly educated, highly mobile society, and you’ll follow in the footsteps of many travelers as they made their way around the empire, from the Mediterranean to Central Asia.

As a scientist who works in the medical field, I thoroughly enjoyed this presentation and I even laughed-out-loud when I heard al-Razi's treatment for melancholia. We take so much of what we have in the medical world, as we know it, for granted. This was an incredible man and it is only because of historical figures like him, that we know what we do today. I wish this were a part of our school curriculum.

Franky Bob Mohammed was a terrible person and his teachings in the Hadiths along with chapter 9 verse 29 of the koran along with the fact that muslims trust him fulling (without evidence.) and the fact that leaving islam will get you killed makes it obvious to outside viewers that islam is a Mohammedan cult; you even pray to Mohammed everyday in your daily prayer saying “and peace be upon you oh prophet (Mohammed.)” giving Mohammed a quality of allah being able to listen to prayer and thusly commuting shirk. We Christians believe Jesus because we believe he is God, and was raised from the dead as ransom for the sins of mankind. Mohammed was just some caravan robber who said he believed he was demon posses but came to believe the demon was the angel Gabriel because his first wife was a catholic. Basically this is how islam spread; Mohammed got lucky because Mecca was a very divided place and he a large enough following in his hometown because he converted some members of his tribe to islam and was set to Mecca to settle a dispute; Mohammed took advantage and copy the story of Able and destroyed the pagans but kept his favorite pagan symbol the black stone 🕋 now being the leader of Mecca after killing everyone else he told everyone they must come to Mecca for prayer in order to ensure taxable income would still be coming in; this wasn’t enough and so Mohammed “received” surah 9 and allowed for the killing of non muslim population permitted prostitution, and allowed “jihad” and continue conquering people and stealing their wealth until he was eventually poisoned by a Jewish woman and would die at the age of 62 being unable to walk and died in the lap of Aisha (who had married when she was 6.) saying “curse are the Christians and Jews for the build places of worship were their prophets died.” And now there is a mosque on the tomb of Mohammed. I’ll stick with Jesus.

I have been very involved in my daughters school starting from PreK to high school. My 9th grade daughter's Social Studies teacher removed from the curriculum the chapter on Islamic Civilization from the HOUGHTON MIFLIN SOCIAL STUDIES Text Book. I wrote a letter to her teacher Mr. Zinuga and a copy to the Principal and Superintendent and Curriculum Director. I kept them all in the loop. Furthermore, I had concerned parents accompany me to the meeting with the Superintendent. Alhamdulillah without any excuses and arguments the 10th chapter of 9th grade social studies text book was put back. The way to go is be involved in your children's education and volunteer in the school and write letters instead of just calling the teacher and talking on phone. Document, document and document. I am not a Muslim and as a norwegian in the cold north of Europe I agree that western schools really need to teach us this because it's part of our history and one of the reasons that we came out from our dark ages (in our dark middle ages) to the period of renaissance and now an advanced civilization. The more I read about the golden age of Islam (and golden ages of other religions for that sake) the more I become impressed about how religion and science went hand in hand (in peace) and had great benefit for the advancement of many advanced civilizations. Yes, bring this important history to our western schools please :) !

We Somalis have been Muslim for 1400 years at least. Perhaps before even Syria a Iraq, or before even in most of Arabian Peninsula. It's a point of pride (AlHamdulillah) for us Somalis that we have embraced the correct religion of God- Allah which is Islam though Prophet Muhammad,- Noble Messenger /Prophet of Allah, peace and blessing of Allah be upon him.. It's believed this conversion to Islam happened as early as the 7th Century, perhaps within a few decades after the death of the noble prophet (. s. a. W.) Interestingly enough, though we speak our mother/native tongue Somali as our first language, still our tongue can be considered Arabic too, because of how easy we can speak /learn Arabic language. So much so that Somalis are considered as being part of the Arabic speaking world. Though there's some controversy when you label Somalis as "Arabs". We get annoyed a bit here Because it implies that we were without a native language or an ancient East African heritage, neither which is true. Also that Somali is branch of the AfroAsiatic family languages.

@Evropa Because without Islamic Golden age and the advancements in every science that was made in that period by middle easterners we wouldnt have 10% of technology and advancements we have now. In the end its not about geography but the scientist who should be recognised for the scientific discoveries they did. You wouldnt have numbers you use right now. they are arabic numbers, like algebra is, like algorithms, calculus, for Gods sake 2 thirds of the stars in the sky are named by arabs, astrology was advanced during golden age more in 500 hundred years than it was for 10 thousand years before. And many many more scientific advancements and discoveryes by muslims, and all that while the rest of the western world was in dark ages, waging wars in the name of Jesus Christ and europe was swiming in human waste just by walking through streets while maids emptyed chamber pots from the windows to the streets. At the same time in Bagdgad they running water and advanced sewer systems and gardens throughout city which is in the middle of the fucking desert, that's what science can do when people decide to learn and research. And this comes from a fucking european who gives recognition where it is due. Great men and their achievements need to be remembered and their lives should be taught at school so our western kids don't grow up thinking only west was responsible for advancement in science when it cant be farther from the truth

Islam wasn’t even put into a fully written form at that time. Iranian scholars and polymaths were the ones who wrote in Arabic and infused their philosophy into Islam. Islam as with Judaism was heavily influenced by Zoroastrianism and Mithraism. It was even an Iranian that gave the Arabic language it’s grammar. An Iranian named Sibaweh created the Arabic grammar. You will, if you leave Islam behind where it belongs (in the 7th century). Europe was held back by religion and it wasn't until the Church started to lose it's power that free thinking really emerged and the scientific revolution followed. It's sad that Muslims have won only three of hundreds on Nobel Prizes in science (since they make up 25% of the population), have not contributed to any modern theory and have no world-class research institutions. I see many Muslims not understanding how science works, are not aware of basic scientific information, and think that the Quran contains scientific miracles where in fact it's full of errors and myths (that get re-interpreted today to fit modern science). This is a BIG problem, because they say that if science doesn't fit the Quran, then science is wrong - this is exactly why they are held back.
