The myth of the Islamic Golden Age of mathematics and scientific discovery is one often repeated but never really considered in the context of the era in which they claim to be Islamic in nature. The vast libraries in Alexandria and Nalanda are just 2 of which Islam destroyed, many others including Bagdad, Mosul (Nineveh), Odantapuri, and Somapuri just to name a few others of note. The thinking of Islamic leaders were stated by Umar, "if it doesn't say what is in the Koran it is useless, so burn it. If it says the same thing as the Koran, we already have it so likewise burn it." The untold millions of scrolls, scriptures and documents, literature, science, and mathematics destroyed are without measure. If you are still of the thinking that their scholars still had algebra, and some of the sciences, you would still be mistaken. There was a small window of indoctrination where the previous culture was tolerated for around 50-150 years of conquest. From these periods of time you have people who were still alive or taught by survivors of their old culture especially the Copts Greeks and the Persian cultures. Arabic numerals actually came from India. Their astronomy from the Persian, Greek and Egyptian cultures. Islam leaves cultural diversity a bloody stump wherever its transplanted or an invasion occurs and becomes the dominant culture group. The claim that Islam brought on the Renaissance is also a joke. The destruction of Constantinople caused the Scholars and artisans of the Greeks to flood Western Europe so I guess that's one way to credit Islam for the Renaissance. Long story short is that everywhere you look at where Islam is strictly practiced today is in abject poverty, illiteracy and ignorance are the norm. It was unique to the belief of a knowable God who created a knowable universe in Protestant Christianity that widespread literacy in Europe was developed, and the scientific and empirical sciences were created. Islam dose not mean peace, but surrender and I will forever try to reach out to those who I can show the light.

The major contributors to any 'Islamic Golden Age' were apostates mostly. Those unwilling to accept the Qu'ran's insistence that there is no such thing as cause and effect because Allah wills all things. @@Aaron_1428 just to be sure, there's more than 600 words in Portuguese language that come from the Arabic, a legacy we preserve from the many centuries when Muslim powers ruled these lands. Our southernmost province is called _Algarve_ , coming directly from the Arabic _Al_ _Gharb_ (The West); a "village" is called _aldeia_ - from the Arabic _al_ _day'a_ , with the same meaning; we even share the expression "May God wish", in Portuguese _oxalá!_ , in Arabic _Insha'Allah!_ , and so long. Muslim/Arabic heritage in Portugal is very cherished and is a natural component of our culture.

I've heard the opposite, that being that many people hate islam in that region even calling it backward and that the era muslims ruled was an era of darkness and backwardness ; which is clearly false, muslims produced a golden age in spain with unprecedented levels of advancement in every field. Our architecture also left a stamp on european buildings, during the 'reconquista' the antagonists though destroying all our libraries and mosques could not destroy alhambra due to its mesmerising otherworldly beauty..

As for Portugal, how could we not value the Muslim heritage, when 600 words of our language come from Arabic, dozens of villages and towns names also, the _azulejos_ pivotal tradition comes from the Arabic tiles, many villages and towns flags have at least one reference to the Muslim or Arabic world... Even in the North where I belong, and where Muslim presence was residual, there are dozens of villages with legends about Muslim battles and trapped Moorish princesses! It played a part in through the exchange of information but to say there wouldn't be one is a bit far fetched. Since it's mainly attributed to the transfer of Greek/Roman texts, traders, and scholars that left the Byzantine Empire to other Christan states. I'm not saying it didn't contribute to it but the way you put it is pretty biased and extremely oversimplified.

Non-Muslims in the caliphate payed a jizya tax (small fixed amount) and Muslims payed a zakat tax (which is based on percentage of wealth, hence generally being a larger tax than the jizya). If someone couldn't afford either tax then they did not have to pay it.

@@Tewfen1337 I don't know about Caliphate but in India, Jizya was twice the Zakat in the reign of Aurangzeb. He didn't exempted even monks and beggars who were traditionally exempted from all kind of taxes in India. Earlier during Delhi sultanate, there was an additional tax on Hindus called Kharaz. Both taxes were so high that many Hindus had no option other than converting to Islam to evade taxes. Historian of Khilji dynasty writes that Qazi of Bayanah advised Sultan Allauddin that imposing Jizya is necessary "to show contempt and to humiliate Hindus." Interestingly Sultan Sikander Butshikan of Kashmir imposed both Jizya and Zakat on Hindus. (You can read it on Wikipedia page Jizya/India). So Ryan is not tht wrong.

What really amazes me is the poetic and complete synergy between the Arabic and Persian cultures under the Islamic umbrella. Though some struggles happened between both cultures, but they really adapted to each other, with an impressive level of harmony. One can know this when he observes the high number of Persian and Arabic scholars interacting freely and peacefully throughout the middle ages. Seldom do you see two dominate cultures interacting with such ease and harmony.

Uh most of the Intellectual works were done by Iranic (and to a lesser extent the Egyptian) peoples. They were building on the traditions of their ancient ancestors. The Arabs just did the fighting and commerce.

The english font choice was awesome, and the blurred wheat field and scrolling layers clip near the end stood out to me. I really like it when you guys explore the depths beyond the clash of battles. @NEW Commenter Knowledge doesn't come from nowhere, of course, all of those Muslim scholars had to research and find sources, most of those sources were either greek or Indian...and lots of their knowledge came from them digging the holes themselves But we can not deny the effort and the years those scholars have spent seeking that knowledge, improving it and finally perfecting it for the time. Just like coding...yes the basics of that came from Muslim scholars but we can not deny the people's effort in initiating those studies into computers, Ai and such Also, Arabs nowadays use " Arabic Hindu" numerals while others use "Arabic" numerals, the first is a straight-up Indian knowledge...the second was inspired but not truly originating from Indian numerals

Seljuk state was heavily Persainized and wasn't genuinely Turkic. Similarly, Ottoman empire marked the downfall of Islamic science buy banning typing machine and modern equipment that were then invented by Westerners. Turkish empires were the worst period in Islamic history!

Learning and advocating decimal-based numerals doesn't get enough praise imho. Now we're all so used to it, it just seems natural, but try to learn the Mayan duodecimal system and do math with it, and you'll soon discover that wrapping your head around non-intuitive numeral systems is bloody difficult, at least it is for me. So kudos to the scholars who saw the merits in the system and advocated for it's adoption.

Muslim scholar mostly never claimed something as their own work, they will mentioned or cited the sources, its not the matter of who find it first , in fact humanity cannot stand on its own, every invention is just another development of what have done before by their predecessor,it not something that come out of the thin air.

Math guy here. It wasn't that it was a base 10 number system that made math more manageable. It was the concept of the number 0 that created a place value system. Place value, which allows for carrying and borrowing numbers, can be done in any base.

God explain how can a thing be exist and science explain how is it works. Like in Quran, Traveler Muslim got told to go to across the world and see how different races that Allah created. And for historian, as me, i really like history, we got told to seek the truth of history, so we aware nations that been doomed by Allah cz of their denial. And of course, Allah will granted us a gift. Even the world not unknowledge our try, but he will for every single Quark in it.

Thumb up for the writing font of latin letters with arabic letters style ( the arabic T replacing the latin a or o and the arabic Y replacing the latin S). There is much creativity and knowldege put into making this font. I insisted in pointing this out since this info may not seem obvious for everyone. Fun fact, in the arabic language another set of numerals called indian numbers is used while in latin written languages the arabic numerals are used. When we had in math exams "write the solutions in arabic numerals" we students were totally confused in which set of numerals to write the solutions since we learned maths in French or English which used a set of numerals different from the arabic language while ignoring that numbers in French or English were called arabic numerals. Keep the good job.
