I just can't get enough of Byzantine history. Maybe it's because my country is filled to the brim with byzantine bureaucracy that I feel this attraction.

@@FlashPointHx The Netherlands, a hallmark of bureaucracy since Napoleon visited us. Though it has it's advantages, we have much detailed information about so many things going back to like 1810.
I have always admired Belasarius and wondered how powerful his character presence/reputation was even in his own time. I am always baffled by the Gothic nobles offer to make Belasarius their king. For a man who was their adversary and did not have any overwhelming strategic advantage, it seems such a bizarre offer. Especially when they surrendered the Ravenna without any securing his promise to accept. Great epsiode!

I think he should have taken the crown. If Justinian was smart he could have had Belesarius as king using native solders and swear fealty to Justinian. Know the war caused a ton of damage to Italy. Justinian could have used the goths as a bulwark in Italy.
@FlashPointHx
Жыл бұрын
@@mattstakeontheancients7594 That would have been a smart move. Once the Byzantine had established themselves in the goth aristocracy they could have then taken full control at their leisure

@@FlashPointHx if anything else Belasarius was loyal to Justinian. Also do you think if the sassanid Byzantine war of the 600s wouldn’t have happened could the Islamic conquest succeeded as well as it did. Feels like as soon as the Islamic conquest started the Byzantine empire lost land on all sides not just the east due to the loss of troops to fighting the sassanids.

You are like critically underrated. You know, you should do a series on an Islamic Gunpowder Empire (Ottomans, Safavids, Mughals), it would go really well with you style of slow narrative prose overlaying a map with movements / slides of artwork. I actually have a ton of primary Mughal sources in my family's library which I painstakingly transcribed and translated as part of my thesis. If you ever do an Islamic near-Eastern or Indo-Persian Empire, do hit me up my man.

Excellent video. I think a case could be made that Belisarius was a Cincinnatus. Justinian used and humiliated Belisarius more than any other general. Seems that Justinian and Theodora were the Ron and Nancy of the 6th Century. The whole story of Justinian is heroic tragedy. Cheers from Tennessee

When I imagine this story in a cinematic way Al Pacino as Michael Corleone would have been a good choice for Justinian - maybe too obvious but a good starting point. They do share some personal traits and a similar character arc. Which actor past or present or which performance would you imagine? And what would be your choices for Theodora and Belisarius or anyone else ?

Theodora did much for womens rights , such as separate incarceration during a most vexing day and age. Consider yourself blessed that you weren't alive back then. A quarter of humanity of the human race went kaput , as for the rest , if you can accept the gulag/ concentration camps images, then you would've seen the state of human race back then. Oh yeah, then there's the battles of whom I consider the last of the Romans Belisarius. Such is life.

Its like what Mark Twain would say of Christianity - a religious ship that sails on an ocean of blood
is there any truth to saint mourice and Maximian
These vids rule
Remember if christianity wasnt to be warped or the bible distaughted there probably would not have been Islam tho Jesus did say ' Bible > John > Chapter 16 > Verse 13 ◄ John 16:13 ► Context Crossref Comment Greek Verse (Click for Chapter) New International Version But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. Meaning jesus knew his teachings would go astray and that Muhammad pbuh would be the one to teach and guide people back to the true belief of 1 God Almighty muhammad was illiterate: The Qur'an identifies the Prophet Muḥammad as al-nabī al-ummī (Q. 7:157-158). Muslim consensus has come to perceive this epithet for the Prophet of Islam as indicating conclusively that he was Muḥammad, 'the illiterate prophet.' Now look what jesus said above about the 'spirit of truth would be taught what to say and read' Muhammad and the Quran is the only book that talks of jesus and his pious mother mary And its clear Jesus was talking of Muhammad to come!
