    Love this series! I do agree, the more I learn about Justinian the more I see him as a Trajan when what the Eastern Empire really needed at that time was a Hadrian, or someone to stop after Africa/Rome conquests and just consolidate rather than fight for Northern Italy and Spain as well.

    Justinian was the man who best expressed the idea of what a good emperor should be in terms of qualities. He was not a corrupt, hedonistic and depraved leader like most Roman emperors before and since. Justinian believed in the idea of justice and the restoration of Rome as a way to change humanity for the better. Justinian was the last Roman emperor whose native language was Latin, not Greek, and the traditions within the empire were more Western than Eastern. Thank you for these videos!

    Hey Flashpoint history, I've commented a couple of times before and I love your work. You've even featured my comments in some of your videos before. It's hard to stay engaged in story lines that jump around. I was interested in the history of Byzantium during the covid outbreak, now long after I have forgotten about it I get a notification that you are continuing the saga. Right now I want to know about Isabella the great, then I remember oh yeah some time ago I was interested in the story of the eastern roman empire. I'll watch your work no matter what, but I feel the key to your channel's growth is telling the complete story before moving onto the next even if it defies chronological order. whatever you decide keep up the great work and I appreciate you.

  • @FlashPointHx

    @FlashPointHx

    I really appreciate the comment John, part of the reason I jump around is because I have artists making art work and musicians coming up with music for the videos - It happens on a production time line so I can have some degree of continuity with my video uploads as a whole. Right now I'm waiting on art work for my Isabella series to come in, I have a collaboration planned with a fellow YT channel for the Art of War series - Doolittle Raid, and I'm working with Robin Pierson for the next Byzantine series. This allows me to best utilize my time. Also, like many YT channels that have an on going series, I place all my videos into playlists that have the videos of a series in chronological order. If you go to my YT site and hit playlist you'll see what I mean - it will plav in order so you won't miss anything.

    Justinian's S Tier Resume: - expanded empirial territory by 44% - stabilised trade, tax and admin - used diplomacy and just causes for war (attempting) to protect the Empire - survived mini-ice age and black death - most gains were profitably held until Phocus and the Arab Conquest. - comtinued to define Byzantine architecture ensuring Constantinople stood as the jewel of the world - Laws would be widely adopted, even by the Germans (Barbarossa) who saw them as the Roman standard - Spread power between his generals and disbanded them to prevent unrest focusing around a powerful alternative (clearly Belasarius understood this rational as they seemingly remained trusted lifelong) - never stopped dreaming in the idea of Rome

    This series highlighted the pros and cons of Justinian's image that many people tend to blur or ignore, and I highly appreciate FPH for doing this. It's such an amazing series. Although, to some degree, Justinian is considered highly praised for the earliest attempts to restore the known Roman world and for having the expert administrative skills to create many works, he still leaves an almost controversial legacy in the latter stages that promoted untended consequences for Byzantium. (the later plague nor the earthquakes wasn't directly a fault of his) Even without the hearsay sources (like Procopius, etc.) that some people try to push aside, we all can determine that Justinian was still a man that overestimated the true factors on the ground, and by using our own common sense, we can have the opinion that Justinian tried to do too much in little time to prop up his image through the annals of time. In the end, two legacies would form after his death. The Emperor that fought for the Eastern Orthodox Religion to Restore Rome made Justinian a beloved icon throughout Western Europe, and much later on, would change to the Emperor that upset the Gods for his own personal ambitions, mismanaged military affairs & indirectly economically ruined Byzantium. Like Empress Theodora, both were the epithet of promoting good things for their respective regions/people & the spreading of the Orthodox faith, yet human hubris (indirectly via intrigue & his true believer mindset with a military policy up towards to the tragedy in Milan) would slowly take its toll, especially on the domestic front in parts of Greece, Egypt and other parts of the Empire amid the war efforts & long attrition in the West. The sack of Anitoch was the last gasp of Roman greatness. Justinian is a symbol & a lesson for all future leaders that they must understand moderation through both domestic & military policy and that having a short-sighted agenda tends to breed more unforeseen consequences that can definitely lead to the downfall of their own respective civilizations. Had Justinian taken his time to redintegrate Africa and use moderation to allow manpower to stabilize more while holding out against the plague, I think Justinian would have been viewed much better throughout history and could have either delayed the decay or could have successfully restored the Roman world.

    Love your work man! I think if the Ostrogoths hadn’t had the succession crisis. Ironically we might of seen an stronger more Roman Italy longer. Things like the 20 years of war , destroying of the Roman Senate members. Especially, if the successors to Theodoric, the great had flipped to Orthodox vs Arian. After all the Goth were the most Roman of all barbarían groups. And Like something said it, I think it would of also kept them in Africa longer as well to consolidate it. Plus the Lombards probably wouldn’t have been able to overrun an Italy that had a stronger population.

  • @FlashPointHx

    You got a really good insight on this Serge - I think that had Justinian pursued a method of trying to politically persuade the Ostrogoths to joining him, instead of years of warfare, it would have ended up better for the empire

    Watching this video makes me wanna do an alternate scenario in which Justinian at the very least waited (as you said) 5 years for Africa to be properly reorganized In reality Theodahad nearly surrendered Italy to Justinian but backed out when Mundus was killed. In 540, with a massive army of 20-30,000 Romans at his door step, he would've surrendered it even quicker. And if the Goths still kill him to fight on, they were a minority in Italy, so the spine of their army would be broken & the campaign over by 542-543. They leave Italy & re-occupy Pannonia & even expand into Noricum Then deal with all the raids by the Bulgars, deal with Khosrow. Reintegrate Italy properly with relief efforts coming to help with the plague. If Khosrow does attack, there will be enough troops to delay him & make him reestablish peace Then once all that's done. By 548 with the Assassination of Theudis, Justinian uses the new resources of the Empire to give an Invasion force of Hispania to around 15,000 men & with the instability of the Visigoths, they could retake all of the South & also Hispania Citerior, plus Narbonensis to make the Spanish lands connect with Italy Edit: And while the plague would hit massively hard, with the conflicts being shorter, they could afford to build another army, though it wouldn't be easy And also if Germanus lived or if his son Justin (Magister Militum per Illyricum) had been the one to succeed Justinian, then the Empire would've been stronger to resist the Lombards & they might be become another Germanic Tribe that occasionally raid Italy

    great video, great series and a very balanced judgement. Hagia Sophia is still standing and it took 1000 years to have Michelangelo Basilica in Rome. The Empire was overstretched but it took 200 years to eliminate Roman presence in Northern Italy. 200 years, please compare with 20th century totalitarian regimes. And the Codex is a base for contemporary Law in Europe. The greatest mistake was not to give Belisarius the soldiers needed to end the Reconquest of Italy. But, finally, the Plague and the Climate Change that produced Middle Age Cold Era were too strong as forces to withstand. Plagues are too often underestimated in Historical assesments. The great legacy of Justinian is that, yes you can invert the historical trend. It might not last as no human endeavour lasts, but it can shape the world for millennia
