The footage of people clinging to planes taking off from Kabul airport made even those who hardly knew anything about Afghanistan talk about it. What kind of country do people escape like that? And how has this become possible?
In the new episode of HOW IT WAS, we'll go into the difficult history of Afghanistan. We'll tell you when the Afghans tried to unite into their first state, what caused three Anglo-Afghan wars in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and how Soviet troops in the 1920s helped Emir Amanullah in his fight against the Mujahideen, or, as they were called then, the Basmachi... You will learn how King Zahir Shah promoted women's equality in the country, why the war in Afghanistan ended in defeat for both the USSR and the United States, where bin Laden and Al-Qaeda came from, how the Taliban emerged, and why the Taliban were able to retake the country so quickly.
