“On the Record with Hamas”: Jeremy Scahill Speaks with Hamas About Oct. 7, Ceasefire Talks & Israel

Support our work: democracynow.org/donate/sm-de...
With the war on Gaza now in its 10th month, we speak with journalist Jeremy Scahill about the state of negotiations for a possible ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas. Scahill recently spoke to senior Hamas officials about the ongoing ceasefire negotiations and the group’s broader goals. He is a co-founder of The Intercept, and he recently announced he was leaving after more than a decade to launch a new investigative journalism outlet, Drop Site News, alongside colleague Ryan Grim. Scahill’s new article, “On the Record with Hamas,” examines the militant group’s motivations to launch the October 7 attacks in Israel, as well as its stance on the negotiations, based on interviews with a number of senior Hamas officials and other sources. “October 7 didn’t happen in a vacuum,” says Scahill. “The primary motivation, Hamas members told me, was to try to shatter the status quo on Gaza. They felt that the situation was becoming untenable.”

So refreshing to see journalists like Scahill is still doing his thing. I’m a millennial journalist degree holder. @@StanBarkington-bt7fu um, ok? I specifically said I am “journalism degree holder” for a reason- I’m not a journalist. I work in a framing shop. Although I did go to college and study it, I am not a journalist. Do you understand the distinction I purposely made? I can maybe, sort-of see how you were confused by my comment, but it does feel unnecessary for you to insult me randomly. Do you break apart compliments on KZread to look for negative things to say to people? I was complimenting two journalists I’ve watched and love for a long time. Weird behavior, Stan. I’m sure there are better uses of your time while you’re on KZread. I find your comment distasteful, rude, and just wholly unnecessary.

McKee, Salim Yusuf, Shofiqul Islam and Safa Noreen arguing that IN THE FUTURE there will be INDIRECT deaths. This letter is a scathingly anti-Israel, pro-Hamas propaganda piece written under the guise of medical ethics. Instead you should listen to what leader Hamas Yahya Sinwar has said that he has NO INTEREST IN A CEASEFIRE because a growing death toll would benefit Hamas. Hamas puts civilians and children in harm's way by embedding its terrorist infrastructure in schools, hospitals, homes, mosques, etc. MEANWHILE, Israel has suffered over 13,000 indiscriminate rocket attacks, INCLUDING TO ITS HOSPITALS, Israeli hostages in Gaza have not had even one visit from International Red Cross, over 200,000 are displaced, and Israel's death toll is very high. Hamas caused this war, slaughtering 1200 innocent civilians, burning babies and Holocaust survivors alive, raping and mutilating women, and young people just attending a Peace Concert. Before Oct 7, Hamas launched Daily rockets into Israel from Gaza -- territory given to the Arabs in 2005 which Hamas has turned into a killing operation against Jews from anti Jewish indoctrination of children in schools to building an enormous network of terror tunnels instead of spending the billions it receives from the West on feeding it's people, creating jobs and becoming a modern civilized country.

No I don't condemn Hamas. I will be damned before I condemn the armed resistance of colonized people against the absolute brutality and savagery of colonial powers. The conditions in Palestine were unbearable and Israel and the US are not interested in a two-state solution. Children with cancer in Gaza had to submit request permissions to the IDF to be treated outside of Gaza. the vast majority of these requests were summarily rejected. Around a quarter of children died before the age of 5 due to water pollution in Gaza. For states that have shrined the right to bear arms in their constitutions, I will not hear a hypocritical moan about Palestinians defending themselves with arms.

"trust".....LOL....You trust Amy "please send money Goodman aand her Husband "me too" Goodman? LOL......they keep inciting and those they incite keep dying. Doesn't that affect their readership? Their numbers keep dropping I presume. Do they know what you are doing? Do you hate facts as much as they hate Jews? Or perhaps, it is the young Muslims they incite to violence with fake news and fake guests, like the "Israeli Historian" that actually was a Palestinian spokesman. that they hate the most? Basically, they are money hungry trolls looking for clicks and dangerous ones at that. Casualty reports by Hamas are not credible. The UN revised its Gaza death toll, almost 50% less women and children killed than previously reported. The UN said it had been relying on figures provided by Hamas. Last week the BBC reported that its calculation of civilian Palestinians killed in this war was way overstated. It appears it also had been relying on figures provided by Hamas..

But the root of it is, the Palestinians did not go to Poland to brutalise and disposess Polish Jews there. But Zionists from all over Europe came to Palestine in the early 1900s and stole the land. The Palestinians have only been reacting to their misfortune ever since.

Is the premise here that Israel in its entirety is an occupation? Similarly, would love to know the difference between a war and a genocidal war. Like, what’s the definition that allows us to make that distinction?
