Norman Finkelstein: The “Big Lie” about Gaza Is That The Palestinians Have Been the Aggressors

democracynow.org - Extended interview with scholar Norman Finkelstein, author of the new book, “Gaza: An Inquest into Its Martyrdom.” The book has just been published as Israel is facing a possible International Criminal Court war crimes probe over its 2014 assault on Gaza, which killed more than 2,100 Palestinians, including over 500 children.

Marc P. Whatever u say. I’m not even arab. Give the Palestinians equal rights and there won’t be any wars. Israel’s goal in 2006 was to destroy hezbollah once and for all. Did they succeed? Your IdF are cowards who can only fight children. Israel can take as much money as they want from Uncle Sam and oppress as much as they want, in the end oppressors never win. All empires fall and you will Be no exception.

Marc P. Yes I am a one state solution kind of guy. One state with equal rights for all. Not a Jewish majority at any cost like you want you fucking racist piece of shit. They were offered their own state when they were the Majority and stil offered less than half of the land. Would you accept that? As for Gaza many of those settlers were transferred to the West Bank and Gaza is still under blockade by land air and sea. It has been established by Israelis own historians than the land was ethnically cleansed of Arabs. I don’t want Jews to leave the land but I do want one state with equal rights for all and if you have a problem with that then you’re a racist scum bag. Like I said don’t worry your apartheid state which intentionally kills children will fall and one state is inevitable . Just a matter of time. Now I’ll give u the last word because there’s no point debating racist filth like you. Fuck you and fuck the IDF. You probably don’t even have any roots in the Middle East and yet claim that land as if you’ve been there for centuries LOL. I can’t wait till hezbollah fucks u up once again. Have a nice life.

This interview was the same year the Right to Return March happened where hundreds of Gazans were slaughtered and thousands were wounded by IDF snipers. But they have also made peace feelers toward Isr. which were generally rebuffed, obeyed ceasefires or pauses in fighting which Isr. generally broke first if I'm not mistaken, and in any case, no words on a piece of paper can justify Israel's campaigns of mass murder. In fact I am beginning to think that it's all directed to forcing the Palestinians out of Gaza - i.e. complete ethnic cleansing of an inconvenient people. And I think the Gazans know this, and know that if they exit the borders in response to Isr.'s terror campaign, they were never be allowed back in. So I pray they can be steadfast: "sumud."

Obama said "that the power disparity between Israel and the Palestinian is so staggering." Israel is tremendously powerful while the Palestinian is almost powerless at the face of Israel's occupation. For the past 10 years Hamas struck Israel with 35 thousand rockets and could only muster 69 Israeli deaths. Israel besieged Gaza and for just a span of 4 days. several thousands Palestinians died with greater number of them civilians and children. We don't glorify death regardless of the exchange of human lives involved. The point is, how could the Palestinians be the aggressors when they are just reacting to the daily violence perpetrated by Israel agaisnt them? 75 years of oppression could make someone resorts to things that could be labeled as despicable. There must be balance in the narratives.

Yeah his admiration for Hamas makes him a veritable prince. Whispered in Gaza - Their Leaders Are Rich Part of what stokes Gazans’ bitterness, according to “Hisham,” is the ostentatious behavior of Hamas leaders. “Nowadays, it’s not an occupier who is killing me,” he says, but rather Hamas, which imposes crushing taxes, leaving Gazans in abject poverty, while its officials have “land, businesses, and vast sums of money.” Hamas imposes a heavy tax burden, collecting roughly $30 million per month from already be-leaguered Gazans. These taxes fund a largely opaque budget, even the purpose of which is secret. Yet Hamas “offers few services in exchange, and most aid and relief projects are covered by the international community,” reports AP. Mohammed Agha, a gas station owner feeling the pinch, lamented, “Before Hamas, 1,000 shekels (about $320) a month was enough for a family to get by. Now, 5,000 isn’t enough because they tax the citizens.” Meanwhile, despite outwardly projecting an air of austerity, Hamas officials and their families live in relative luxury. In 2009, Hamas political bureau chairman Ismail Haniyeh declared, "Our hands are clean. We do not steal funds, hold real estate, or build villas." Yet in recent years, Haniyeh’s son has become widely known in Gaza as “Abu al-Aqarat [Father of Properties]” for extensive real estate holdings made possible by his father’s influence. Earlier this month, Palestinian journalist Lara Ahmed reported that Haniyeh has laundered several million dollars among his extended family. As Palestinian journalist Akram Atallah observed that “Hamas as an authority has been exposed,” he said. “The people found out that its leaders live much better than they do.” Gazan youth sometimes respond to such information with dark humor. Last year, local activists launched a social media campaign drawing attention to Hamas financial impropriety, titled "Our Hands Are Clean." A recent poll by The Washington Institute found not only that large majorities of Gazans “are frustrated with Hamas governance,” but also that 84 percent of Gazans prioritize “internal political and economic reform over foreign policy issues.”

I cannot respect a guy who whitewashes Hamas as he does. Gaza • 1/30/23 Whispered in Gaza - We Need a Mature Government In recent years, observes Fadi, Gazans have discovered that “the Palestine which Hamas wants to liberate is not the same Palestine which we as Palestinians were expelled from. … There is now an entire people there - and that, a people, and Israel as a whole, which the Palestinians actually need.” While Hamas makes it “extremely hard to talk about peace,” Fadi believes that “if we could engage the outside world, it would be possible for Palestinians in Gaza to regain their humanity. … [and] in recognizing that life has value, they’d see the humanity in Israelis too.” Hamas often claims that victory is imminent. Last year, Hamas politician Kanaan Abed declared, “The State of Israel will be history. Palestinians outside Palestine: Prepare your papers. You will return to Palestine after the liberation.” Many Gazans see a different reality. As one young Gazan struggling to provide for his family told the Economist, “My life is like a TV screen with no picture.” Rather than open up new spaces for Gazans, Hamas hems them in still further. As noted earlier, in 2021, after Gazan activists held a series of Zoom conversations with Israelis to discuss the possibility of peace, Hamas arrested several of them. Hamas’s armed wing declared in a statement, “Normalization in all its forms and activities is treason, a crime, and religiously, nationally, and morally unacceptable.” The group’s leader was imprisoned and tortured, according to the AP. Omar Shakir, Israel-Palestine director at Human Rights Watch, noted that the incident reflects Hamas’s “systematic practice of punishing those whose speech threatens their orthodoxy.”

Hes not being honest, Hamas is a bloody awful restrictive, fundamentalist religious organization and those of us on the left should not be acting as if they have noble intentions Gaza • 1/30/23 Whispered in Gaza - My Struggle is Through Communication “Zainab” would like the world to know that “there’s a false stereotype that Palestinians in Gaza love rockets and wars.” While pro-Hamas media works to “instill a thirst for blood” in the youth, her struggle is to tell Israelis and Palestinians alike “that I’m a human being here in Gaza - not a beast, a terrorist, or a lover of weapons - because in the end, weapons won’t get us anywhere.” Hamas rhetoric calls for Gazans to serve as cannon fodder. Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar memorably told Palestinians, “Everybody who has a gun should take it, and those who don’t have a gun should take a butcher’s knife, axe or any knife they can get… from satellites, the entire region should be seen engulfed in fire.” Last month, the head of the Hamas Women’s Movement gave an interview describing the culture of “martyrdom-seekers” that Hamas fosters, in which “a girl sets out only one thing on her mind - to meet her Lord by means of her blood and body parts.” She added that “most kindergartens [in Gaza] belong to our sisters in Hamas. Children are raised from a young age on this culture … From infancy, children are nurtured to love jihad, to want to meet Allah.” The many Gazans who oppose this worldview are forbidden to say so. Any attempt at civil peacemaking is met with harsh repression. In 2020, when a group of Gazan peace activists held a Zoom meeting with Israeli counterparts, several were arrested, beaten, and charged with “betrayal.” Unsurprisingly, as one young Gazan woman told NPR, “most Gazans have stopped believing in Hamas and the others… they don’t feed us, they don’t provide anything. How can we build a future with these guys?” Ali El-Jeredly, an unemployed 28-year old Gazan, put it more directly: “I want work more than rockets.”

He's spot on about Hamas (and PA). Israel effectively targeting and eliminating (one way or another) anybody who has leadership skills or appears like they'd got charisma, intelligence to effectively galvanise Palestinians and be acceptable to the West, is their biggest achievement.

Nowhere else in the world is an apartheid state tolerated. The Balfour declaration stated that Palestine must be treated as an equal state, which has never been the case. Israel protests the violence carried out by Palestinians, but this would not be the case if they were not treated so horribly.

Finklestein - another amazing person showcased on Democracy Now. The corporate media would have never allowed this; every time I watch Mainstream Media I feel I only get one side of the story (the side with the most power and money), but watching DN gives me the other side. Israel is a strong contender for the worst country on the planet. I am amazed how a country of only 8.5million people can cause some death, oppression, destruction and propaganda and simultaneously attract $Billions from USA in aid - so disgusting. And for the rest of the world that supports such a terrible oppressive apartheid regime - so shameful.

SASHA Savage Nice trolling, but as you know most of the money went to corrupt leaders in the PA, welfare because Israel has destroyed their economy and to rebuilding destroyed homes. To say they built nothing is a lie and you know it. And Israel receives far more than Palestine even though they don't need it, and all they do is use the money to expand the illegal occupation and kill or torture anybody who opposes it. Truth hurts doesn't it...

Dinal Abay Israel is a very bad country no doubt, but to say that it is a strong contender for the worst is hyperbolic to say the least.

SASHA Savage Red herring fallacy. You said that they built nothing with foreign aid and that statement is 100% pure bullshit. You know it as well as I do and so you use evasion tactics like a typical dishonest ideologue. "Israel was established through violence." Irrelevant. How a state was founded has no bearing on its obligation to behave according to international law today. "The losers don't get to dictate terms" They aren't trying to dictate terms, they are trying to reach peace. And just as a matter of fact, in a legal sense the loser has exactly the same rights as the winner. Your barbaric notion that states can just take what they want if they have military superiority might be true in practical terms, but has zero legitimacy in legal terms. It is also morally repugnant. "They can have Gaza as a Palestinian State" That is probably the dumbest thing that anybody has said EVER. Gaza is already one of the most overpopulated places on the planet, it is in ruins and the UN predicts that it will not be sustainable for the population by 2020. And your solution is to ethnically cleanse millions of people out of the West Bank, force them into a place that cannot possibly handle them and for Israel to steal the land that the Palestinians are legally entitled to??? I hope you know that I mean this and that I am not just saying it because I disagree with you, but you are genuinely a horrific human being and the world would be a better place without you. "If they behave for a couple of years maybe Israel will allow them more freedom of movement" Wrong, every time the Palestinians are peaceful Israel refers to it as a "peace offensive", escalates the situation and then invades. Anyway, I don't want to talk to you anymore because you are so morally reprehensible you literally make me feel nauseous and make me lose faith in humanity. You're muted, so fuck off.

I am doing research on these topics because I was oblivious to what was happening in the Middle East. How do you feel about the recent activities going on over there? I didn’t know the complexity of this conflict, here in America the news we receive is so biased. When I found out about the war I had to start researching for myself.
