I was born and raised a Catholic and did 13 years in Catholic schools. Even way back then we were not taught that Genesis was literal. We did bible stories when really little but as soon as proper schooling started we were taught about science and how the bible should be looked as a way ancient people made sense of the world and how they should live their lives. This creationist thing seems like an American phenomena that's been exported to the christian world.

That's due to a difference in religion. Catholics have sources outside the bible like saints and the Pope, while the different branches of protestant Christianity only rely on the bible and their interpretation of it. And of course if your only source of knowledge of God is the bible, then the bible cannot be wrong or else the very foundation of your belief falls apart.

Read Joshua 10:12-13. How did the plants created on day three survive without the Sun, and in the Absolute Zero temperatures of outer space ? Astrophysical science has established that the Earth and the planets were formed from cooled matter _after_ the Sun, yet the Enuma Elish ( Genesis ) creation story claims that the Earth was created before the Sun. Joshua 10:12-13: " Then spoke Joshua to the LORD...Sun, stand thou still.... and thou [ also] Moon...." 13) " And the Sun stood still, and the Moon stayed [ still ] until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies..." --- Joshua commanded _BOTH_ the Sun itself, _and_ the Moon to stand still, not the Earth, which proves that the bible authors believed that the Sun, by itself, traveled in motion over the Earth in the exact same way as the Moon does, and, that it could be magically stopped, dead in the sky, simply by one man's prayer to Yahweh/Jesus ! Habakkuk 3:11 describes the same event: " The Sun AND the Moon stood still in their habitation...." WOW !

@@vernonchitlen8958 Even if you prove the theory of biogenesis false, it still doesn't make your claim true. Those are separate issues. The theory of biogenesis can be false while Christianity still being false. You realize that you believe a magical being created all life out of nothing? (Without trying to explain how that would be even possible.) So in the end, who is actually required to have more "faith"? At least science is trying to explain how something like the life that we see has occurred. One last thing to think about: Genesis makes many claims about how life came to be on this planet. Do you believe that is all scientifically accurate? (There is mountains of evidence that disprove the Genesis accounts.) How many peer reviewed papers have been written about how the Genesis accounts are true? You may want to work on your own skepticism of your religion a bit more before jumping on the defensive there buddy.

@@vernonchitlen8958 OK then demonstrate to me spontaneous creation works. Show me some water turned into wine. Or some mud into a creature. Then we can settle this debate once and for all. I would love to see all the scientific awards you would win by demonstrating that you can create something from nothing. You are committing the same fallacy as someone who doesn't do or read the research themselves. You're trusting on something you can't verify, your holy book, to tell you where life came from. Who wrote this book? What background in science do they have? Can you be sure they actually heard from god and aren't making shit up? Again, none of this proves that Jesus rose from the dead. Show me, better yet, prove to me that Jesus rose from the dead? You are very gullible to believe that Jesus rose from the dead, and take it as fact, when you're equally extremely skeptical of a scientific theory. Science doesn't claim a theory to be always true. If you can prove that it is false, the theory is revised. With Christianity, it is the complete opposite: No matter how many times you prove their faith to be false, they never revise their beliefs. How much evidence do we have to present to Christians before they realize their mistake in believing in a false God? I know this is your grand defense in a god, but none of it does any good in defending your holy book. I'm not a scientist, but I know for a fact that the bible is a book of fiction.

Do you mean context of the book of genesis to ancient Israelites?

  • @thetypingape2073

Cultural context of each book, knowledge of how it has morphed over time, context of what was trying to be told at the time it was written. Context is essential in understanding ancient stories as the mindset of storytelling itself has changed dramatically over time. For example, if you read myths from The Egyptian Book of the Dead, they are using storytelling to explain the existence of the physical world through metaphor. If you had no understanding of that, and read it, it would just seem like a bizarre drama about incest and sibling rivalry.

Thank you for this broadcast! And being honest, I read the bible from early age on. One thing i never did, was taking it literally. Even at young age realizing it is most of the part about morals and rest is some kind of a nice story. Even realizing the story contradicting itself at times. Keep on doing stuff like this, and Bart is good, too!

The best that the 21st century has offered to the science of history studies, religious studies and folklore studies is Bart Ehram. That is why we should only listen to and read Ehram’s lectures and papers, not anyone else’s. Anyone who has at least read Ehram’s blogs knows how good he is and I don’t think anyone else has to challenge Ehram. And I’m not kidding, Ehram is really superior in his own field of science. And the fact that Ehram is so popular and so genius proves that Ehram is right in his opinions. And that’s an even bigger reason why we should only listen to Ehram on this subject. And therefore, on the other hand, it is good that there are even some smaller universities that reject the studies of all other scholars except Ehram in their teaching. And that's how it should be. In this debate, too, Ehram proved why, by far.
