As a 9 year old back in '81 who loved seeing snow that was one hell of a month for snowfall here in North somerset, multiple snowfalls during the month ending with over a foot of level snow here at sea level, one can only imagine the depths up on the mendips/Dartmoor etc!

I recall the one of January 79 too ' I 'm not sure which winter holds the record ' I would say they were 50/50 ' but that's my personal experience ' depending what region you were ' a few years later I moved to the USA (Massachussets) where we already owned a holiday home in upstate ny ' where I recall a few similar winter events during the middle to late 80s ' a popular winter event memory of everyone there at the time was the blizzard of 1978 which had affected much of the north east region of America ' have seen some stunning pics of that one.

During one week of night shift that winter, I was working in Pitlochry, Perthshire. On all 7 nights we checked the thermometer in the Roads Department Yard at Blair Atholl and it was never warmer than -20c. The same night Braemar recorded -27.2 , while in Blair Atholl it was showing -27c. Winters are so much less intense and dare I say it, boring now!

I was 20 in 1981 and remember this well, I was brought up in Bristol and the floods and snow were incredible, we lived in a cul-de-sac running east to west and our cars at the western end were buried by massive snow drifts. It was incredible and nice to hear the details again.

I am old enough to remember this year. We delivered milk for the milkman on our sledges as he couldn’t get his milk float up the hill. The snow was up to my waist in places.

Interesting video. I was living in the UK, being in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at RAF Croughton, from June 1981 - June 1983, and remember, very well, the snow of December 1981, and especially the huge snow of January 8 & 9, of 1982. People with whom I still maintain contact, and who were there at the same time, still talk about it (we were talking about it, today, in fact). My memory from that big snow includes walking to work and going through snow drifts that were all the way up to my waist. Many people were unable to come in to work, due to the road conditions. It was probably several days before people were able to move about on the roads, which was due to some serious work with snowplows to clear them. I also remember being on the roads, once they were cleared, and the snow was so high on both sides of the road it was like driving through a tunnel. Thank you for putting this together.

I remember it too ' was 14 living in London ' my school sent us home early during the run up week to Christmas at the end of term ' remember the snow ploughs on the roads which was rather unusual living in Inner London region ' often get this Winter mixed up with the one of 78/79 ' being quite close together ' both two severe Winter events ' seemed to be more common back in the 1970s and early 80s than now ' think I built a snowman in the garden ' which lasted for over 2 weeks.

Scott Richards, I remember this cold spell well. It snowed heavily in Derbyshire on Sunday December 6th, 1981. I started a new job on the 7th and remember having to get there in tricky conditions. We didn't get any more snow in our area after the 6th and 7th, but weeks of freezing temperatures followed.

I think the most exciting thing about this winter was a foot of snow appeared without warning in the early part of dec 1981, 4 days later we had the heaviest snow I have even seen, it snowed for over 5 hours, by which time I think there was nearly 2 feet of level snow lying, this was in London, it snowed on Christmas eve but not on Christmas day so I didn't count as a white Christmas despie a foot of snow on the ground.the snow then went away before coming back with avengence, in jan 1982, I remember it snowed for nearly 3 days solid deep snow and very very cold, WOW what a wonderful.memory.

Me and my mate had one of the best cod fishing winters off the Norfolk beaches over this winter. The days of catching cod off the beaches now are a sad reflection of the sport we had through the 70s and 80s mainly because of rising early winter sea temperatures along with the fact that we in Norfolk just don't get the big northerly winds that were a very regular thing. People who say there is no global warming should have lived a life on a coast and watched and relied these weather events over 50 years the sand nearly vanished off the Norfolk beaches on the winter of 85/86 and really from that date nothing has ever been the same again

The 1981/82 winter had its extreme cold but the South (in Dorset) escaped the worst of this snowy conditions. with the heaviest coming from that 13th Dec blizzard. However that snow even though it was a foot deep had all melted by dawn the following the morning. There was a bit of snow on 8th and 19th Dec but that was it. In Jan 1982, there was some heavy snow on 7th-9th Jan but totals did not come to more than 6 inches deep and that had all gone by 15th Jan. We had considerably more snow on 15th/18th-20th Feb 1978, 30th Dec 1978, 26th Apr 1981, 8th/18th Jan 1985, 14th Jan 1987, 7th/8th Feb 1991, 15th Feb 1994 and 6th Feb 1996. In the 1980's as a whole, only the 1981/2, 1984/5 and 1986/7 winters produced more snow than average where these cold spells lasted only a fortnight but all the other winters were relatively mild. No mention of Feb 86, it was cold throughout that month with little snow.
