No double glazing or central heating then

I was 14 that winter. Ponds froze solid , killing the fish . Icebergs on the Yorkshire Ouse . Bird life annihilated nationwide .Diesel engines waxing up .No central heating , one coal fire . Waste pipes frozen daily .Off school ! Must have been dreadful for the grown ups...kids had a great time .We may see it again when the solar minimum kicks in .

Started snowing in Swindon's boxing day dinner time 6 inches by 5pm then a hard frost s from there on blizzards from the east

I have just found you ,I have been telling people for years how we went to bed at 3pm with newspapers on top of our sheets under our eirderdowm. Down in kitchen Mum did turn oven for heat with door open so we could eat.Something I never want again. Ta. Paul B.

Remarkable winter, just before my time but my Dad talks about it from time to time

I was seven and as a kid- no! Hated it- way too cold. The windchill was awful. Years later I looked this winter up to see if I was in any way wrong. No! It was utter hell on Earth! Anyone wanting a winter like this again ought to live in Antarctica for a spell. We had no coal-coke-and the water pipes all froze-so bottled water. Not much food in shops. Some people were dropping dead in this-tragically happened to one of our neighbours. My Mom said it was as bad as 1947 which she well recalled. 1962-63 was a winter that-in what's left of my life- I want no repeat of-no Siree Bob!

Thanks for this highly detailed analysis of the biggest freeze certainly in my lifetime. I was twelve at the time, living in the Rhondda South Wales. As I recall it started snowing on Boxing Day and snowed every day from then until my return to school in January after the festive holiday.

Despite looking forward to cold & snow in winter I would never want something like this to ever be repeated again because I'm also a animal lover & I viewed a program on the tv recently about this winter & the impact on wildlife was utterly devastating.

It happened here in Ireland also 1962 /63 was Irelands coldest winter aince 47
