Thanks for the upload, I remember that summer well. I left school mid May that year & I had a 3 & a half month break before starting college beginning of September. Being on the south coast, we felt the full benefit of the weather. That period was the best time of my life and the hot weather helped make it so. And yes I do remember a couple of big thunderstorms that summer!

I was at college and remember hot weather in late June,July and into August. I went to Germany with the family for the rest of that summer. It was very warm there too; we stopped by a lake on the way back from somewhere and people were swimming nude in it in the middle of the night! But it had turned cool and damp in England by the time we arrived back there on the first weekend of September.

It's interesting how the July temperature record is still in the top two warmest nearly 37 years on.

I remember going on holiday July 1983 to Isle of Wight but took all the hot weather in my stride (being young). I can remember hot summers but can't place the year as clearly if it was 1983 or not. (at the time it didn't seem to matter lol) weather got a bit wet as the 80's went on but 1987 was another hot summer I seem to recall (but maybe not such a long duration - I have uploaded a news clip from '87 and the news guy says 'its going to be hot today and tonight') apologies for the waffle.

Cool video, very interesting to get a glimpse into what the weather was doing in years gone by.

I was only 10 during July 1983 and my god it was a month! In a way I think it actually tops July 2006.

It's odd how everyone remembers 1976. The summer of 1983 was just as good and as hot, at least in London. But nobody seems to remember it.

Jon Rose sick of the media obsession with 76. There have been a couple of nasty storms here in Mcr so far this summer, then the build ups of heat, and it's all felt very 1983, which I remember very well.

Probably, the issue is that the spring of 1976 was quite dry and the weather had been very dry since the summer of 1975, whereas the spring of 1983 was one of the wettest on record. The only wetter springs in the EWP series have been, in order, 1782 (wettest), 1818, 1979, 1947 and 1981. Of these, 1818 and 1947 were followed by very dry summers, but in the springs of 1818 and 1947 the wettest weather was in March and April, with May 1983 being much wetter than May 1818 or May 1947.

Hot as 1983,1989,1990,1995,1997 or 2003 or much of 2006 for that matter were,I would say that only 2018 truly compares with 1976 so far. But who knows what global warming has around the corner for us?

I remember the summer of 1983 quite well. I was born in December 1979 so was 3.5 at the time. My girlfriend was born 8th July 1983.

Can you talk about the summer of this year and 2019's summer for me please because both of these summers had a go of 30 degrees Celcius in 4 to 5 consecutive days?

I remember that Summer very well here in Ireland it was so hot and very Thundery.I learned a hard lesson that summer in July of 83 i got very severe Sun burn boy was it very paimful.I got very bad blisters on my sholders ouch😂😂I havent taking off my T-Shirt in the summer since then😂😂

The experts reackon that by 2050 there will be more freak Heatwaves and more severe thunderstorms

Have you done Historic weather for Summer 1928. I think Summer 1928 was a hot year? I was watching the aerial archeology program on BBC 4 the other day and they said it was a very dry year/su,mmer and it enabled archeological sites to be seen from above the ground because the markings became clear. So sounds like an interesting year to maybe look at?

I remember this summer very well Scott that whole summer here in Ireland was very hot indeed I remember getting very bad sunburn boy did I suffer 😂😂😂. Your videos are very good keep up your good videos

Thanks! The 1980s summers were actually really mixed. 1983, 1984 and 1989 were the warm/hot summers in that decade. 1985, 1987 and 1988 were awful summers and 1986 was a remarkably cool summer.

The previous hottest month in the CET series had been - remarkably - July 1783 (CET 18.8 degrees Celsius), exactly two hundred years beforehand and during a huge volcanic eruption in Iceland (Laki). A more obvious parallel was July 1818, which had been preceded by the coolest sequence of summers and years since 1700 and had seen a spring exceptionally similar to 1983. In fact, 1818 and 1983, along with 1773, 1811, 1820, 1947 and 1981, are the only calendar years with the wettest month in the spring since 1766.

@@ScottRichards10 1980 was very poor; dull, wet and thundery. 1981 was cooler and drier than usual, 1982 was warmer and wetter than usual. 1986 was reasonable in June and July but bad in August.

I watched the 1986 World Cup final in a big family group visiting my nan,aunts and cousins with my dad,stepmum and sister on a hot Sunday. I was 21 and wore T-shirt,trainers and a whole of thigh-baring pair of 80s shorts,which got a couple of comments soon after our arrival but was perfect comfort-wise for the weather!
