Himalaya : Becoming a Buddhist Monk | SLICE

Kenrap is eight years old. He is a Buddhist monk who lives in the Phukthal monastery in the Himalayan range of Zanskar. He has chosen to live far from his family. At the age of five, he was considered the reincarnation of a 68-year-old monk, and as such was sent to the world that belonged to him.

Can't blame the little monkey for trying to diversify his austere diet.

What makes you say so? They do live difficult lives in the monastery carved into the mountain without the modern luxuries that many of us of us enjoy, like soft beds, sunscreen, and ready-made foods, but that doesn't mean that they are abused. Besides, judging their lives from the lens of our own cultures and experiences does them a disservice. Life as mountain farmers is also a difficult life full of hard labor, but at one point most if not all humans lived this way. If they were yelled at and berated all day, beaten, and/or starved, then I'd agree with you, but they aren't. They tend to look older because of the exposure to sun and cold winds without sunscreen or other protection. If they decide at a later date when they are a bit older that monastic life is not a good fit for them, they are welcome to leave.
