My solo day hike to Lonesome Lake & Cannon Mountain located at Franconia Notch in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Cannon Mountain counts for both the New Hampshire 48 4000 Footer (NH48) hiking List and the Hi-Cannon trail to the summit counts as an elective for The Terrifying 25 (T25) hiking list. The New Hampshire 48 4000 Footer list, created by the Appalachian Mountain Club, consists of 48 mountains in New Hampshire with elevations of at least 4,000 feet and a minimum of 200 feet prominence. The Terrifying 25 list, created by Trish, Alex, and Sage Herr, consists of the most interesting White Mountains trails that have slides, rock scrambles, or boulder caves. This video is part of my series where I attempt to find the best day hikes in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Did I find the best day hike in New Hampshire? One of the top day hikes in New Hampshire at least! Specifically, Cannon Mountain and Lonesome Lake are located near Franconia, NH in the White Mountain National Forest.

Hey Adam, love this video. The area you hike in is so beautiful. I live in East Tennessee and am surrounded by many 5 star hikes. If ever in NC, go check out the profile trail in Grandfather Mountain it has MANY terrifying ladders and huge boulders to climb. Epic hiking for sure. Just a plug for the south.🤣

O I fell in love with the mountains and forest and trails of New Hampshire Long ago. I know its a travesty I've never really hiked in the south and definitely need to get there some day. I do have a cousin in Tennessee so may sooner rather than later! I do love me a crazy ladder!

Some years ago, I came down the Hi-Cannon Trail from the summit(gained the summit on the Kinsman Ridge Trail). Couldn't help but think, in certain sections, that if one were to come down that trail with a half a 'buzz' on, he/she could become a permanent part of the landscape - there were a few moments...

If you get to the parking lot by 8 am you should be able to find a spot but maybe not on a holiday weekend. We reserve a campsite for our hike. For $25 we have plenty of room to unpack, sort gear on the picnic table, put on boots without being squished between cars that park too close, getting our gear out while cars zoom by trying to find a parking spot......all that angst...gone. Back in the day parking on the road was horrible. Cars zooming by while we were trying to get out gear out while parked on a slope was crazy.

I hiked up this trail in winter wearing microspikes. They were really needed once the trail veers left up the steep stone steps (covered in snow). Since the hut/lake is on the 'other' side of Canon. On the way down we put on our snowshoes! Very very nice adventure. We may do it again this winter (23) if we get enough snow. The hut was fun in the off season. We took over the kitchen, cooking up dinner and breakfast we brought from home. Not too cold in the dining room (small woodstove is lit for a little while) but that bunkhouse (not attached) was darn chilly. Highly rated sleeping bags is the way to go. Since there was no wind but going outside up the steps to the bathroom required breaking all land speed records. Brrr
