This is my third ascent of Beinn Alligin, all of them in winter. It's one of my favourite mountains and one of the great peaks of Torridon, which is arguably the finest mountain region in Scotland.
I had planned to camp on the summit to catch first light but due to time constraints I had to content myself with an early start before sunrise. The ascent of the first munro, Tom na Gruagaich (922m), is straightforward but relentlessly steep. Then there's a beautiful ridge to the second munro of Sgurr Mor (986m) which has a dramatic cleft near its summit - the Eag Dubh (05:50). The views to the north across Torridon to Slioch and the Fisherfield peaks is incredible.
I had hoped to continue along the ridge across the famous "Horns of Alligin" (09:12) but with so little daylight in December I ran out of time and had to retrace my steps back over the first munro. An amazing day despite missing out on the Horns (which I did way back in the 90s!).

Remember that hiking and mountain climbing can be dangerous. The videos on my channel are for entertainment only (other than where specified). Always prepare well and be willing to abandon a trip if it becomes dangerous due to weather or unexpected trail conditions. If you are new to hiking and the great outdoors it's always a good idea to go with a guide or a more experienced companion.
And remember - give the wildlife some space, leave no trace, go quietly and enjoy it out there!
A word on drones - I know how annoying it is to hear a drone whizzing about when you are trying to enjoy the peace and solitude of wild places. I'm also aware of the potential to disturb wildlife with them. I always avoid flying the drone when there are other hikers around. It's one of the reasons I tend to hike at less popular times of day and in mid-week and I avoid using the drone if I do see others nearby. I never fly a drone towards wildlife or where birds are likely to be nesting.

    Thank you for the beautiful images and no talk over with loud music, a rare thing these days. Alligin one of my favourite mountains and Torridon my favourite part of the Highlands to visit. I climbed Alligin in between lockdowns and in 27degrees. The steep climb, at the beginning, nearly finished me off but the views from the top were breathtaking. Sorry you didn’t make the Horns but understandable given the lateness of the day, though I’m guessing the time it took you to retrace your steps over the first Munro, was probably not that much different to doing the Horns. You really lucked out on the weather though and so rare to get those kind of conditions in Scotland. Were you just lucky or were you scouring the weather charts for days - ha ha! Either way, the winter visibility paid off and you got some great shots. I haven’t seen your work before but very pleased your posting dropped into my feed. I saw in your page you have done Sarek. I did part of the Kungsleden in Sept this year - Nikkualokta to Abisko via Nelllo and Vestas - truly awesome and the first signs of winter that far north. Bon canmino in your travels my friend and look forward to seeing other posts 🇮🇪👏🍻

    Thanks so much for the feedback. Glad you enjoyed it. You're right about the Horns / turning back not being much different in time. I was in a dilemma on Sgurr Mor trying to decide what to do. It was pretty icy and having done the horns many years ago I knew it might be quite slow going in winter conditions. So I took the easy option and headed back the way I came. I didn't want to find myself half way along the horns struggling on steep icy ground and not having time to turn back from there. There's always another day. I was up hiking around Nikkaluokta in winter many moons ago. Fantastic area. I climbed Kebnekaise in full winter conditions. Absolutely stunning. That was in the days before youtube though so there's no film for that one. Thank you for watching. More to come!

    Having been spoilt for choice with the likes of Harmen Hoek and Kraig Adams videos, I think yours deserves a special mention. I keep being drawn back to it, especially the music in the opening bit and also the music and the sunset at the end. You can almost feel the cold when you hear you footsteps on the snow/ice 🙂

    Thanks for the kind words. Appreciate your comment about the audio of the footsteps. I've been trying to get the audio mix right. I think it really helps recreate the atmosphere. Glad it made you feel cold as that's exactly what it felt like when I was there!

    @@Jim_Manthorpe-hiking Hi Jim, I think the ambient sound of footsteps, the wind, water flowing, etc all add to the listening experience and that's on top of the great choice of music and amazing drone shots. It doesn't matter that I've heard some of them on other channels, but that's probably because these tracks are very good choices and go really well with the visuals. I didn't mention, but the timing of the music in your video is really good too and great editing. Would be great to see longer videos, but then I can always watch the same one on repeat haha.

    That's interesting that you've heard the music in other films. I spend quite a lot of time trying to find the right music. Obviously I'm not always being as original as I thought I was! 😅 I think the ambient sounds are really important. Gives a sense of what it felt like to be there. Thanks for your feedback. I really appreciate it. Will definitely do some longer films next year. A few people have suggested it.

    Majestic. I did a quick image search on these mountains: I don't think anyone has made them look better. That light dusting of snow on the horizontal strata of the Torridon sandstones just brought out that ancient, ancient geology so perfectly. (When you are walking on a stray bit of America that got tugged away by the opening Atlantic, then you can surely feel the planet.) You were a long way from anywhere, on top of a very remote Munro at a December sunset, and I gather that this area has no established paths. What time could you close a door on the wind, cold, and the dark?

  • @Jim_Manthorpe-hiking

    @Jim_Manthorpe-hiking

    7 ай бұрын

    Thanks Roy. Great comments. The geology in the north-west is fascinating. Like you say, the snow really helps to define the strata in that Torridonian sandstone. I always think we're so lucky to live in a time where we (or rather geologists before us) have worked out the history of these mountains. It makes it all the more fascinating to gaze upon them and think about how they came to be in their present state. I stayed until sunset on Tom na Gruagaich, knowing that there was a pretty good path all the way down to the foot of the hill and I had two headtorches (just in case one failed!). I managed to get off the icy section at dusk and only needed the headtorch for the easier lower section. Thanks for watching.
