Moidart on the west coast of Scotland is one of the most under-appreciated areas for hiking in the Highlands of Scotland. This short 6km hike takes in so much: temperate rainforest, hill, moor, a spectacular coastline and even a 13th century castle.
And the castle isn't the only piece of history - the path passes the ruins of the township of Briaig. Ruined villages such as this one are common in the Highlands. During the 19th century, rich and powerful landlords evicted the people who lived on the land and in some cases burned their houses. Many of them emigrated to North America. They were replaced with sheep which were seen as more profitable.
The final stage of the hike is along the Silver Walk, so called because some Elizabethan coins were found here when the path was constructed. It's an amazing path, at times cut into the cliffside above Loch Moidart. There is lots of wildlife around here: otters, oystercatchers, curlews, seals and white-tailed eagles.
Finally, the trail reaches Castle Tioram which is on a “dry island” only accessible at low tide along a sand bar. Built in the 13th century, it was the seat of Clan Ranald. It was set on fire by order of the clan chief, in the 18th century, to stop it falling into the hands of the government.

Remember that hiking and mountain climbing can be dangerous. The videos on my channel are for entertainment only (other than where specified). Always prepare well and be willing to abandon a trip if it becomes dangerous due to weather or unexpected trail conditions. If you are new to hiking and the great outdoors it's always a good idea to go with a guide or a more experienced companion.
And remember - give the wildlife some space, leave no trace, go quietly and enjoy it out there!
A word on drones - I know how annoying it is to hear a drone whizzing about when you are trying to enjoy the peace and solitude of wild places. I'm also aware of the potential to disturb wildlife with them. I always avoid flying the drone when there are other hikers around. It's one of the reasons I tend to hike at less popular times of day and in mid-week and I avoid using the drone if I do see others nearby. I never fly a drone towards wildlife or where birds are likely to be nesting.

I think your most beautiful film to date. Your films help to bring things back into focus, there is a stillness to them and they quieten this noisy chaotic world for the few moments that they last. Of course its nature and the places where you go that does that, but you have to capture it, and you do. The music during the first 4 minutes is perfect, music can make or ruin films, that was perfect.

Thanks Steve. I really appreciate your comments because that's exactly what I hope my films do - give a little bit of peace and calm in this crazy world. It's tricky choosing the right music. I'd love to use some more of yours!

Ok, so I fell in love with this area back in Spring 2018. Came back buzzing, with some nice images. But watching this one reminds me of the fact that you are demonstrating some of the best adventure filming available anywhere on You Tube. And it happens to be in MY country. I don't want to embarrass you by saying any more Jim. But keep bringing us your interpretations of our land. Can't wait for more. Stay safe. 👍

Love this. I always come off path after the reservoir and head up to the right to the hill directly above Tioram. If you’re ever up this way again you should check it out. Breath taking views over Loch Moidart and Kentra to the left

Oooh, that framed view of Castle Tioram that comes in at 6.57! I think this silent hiking genre ought to be a film category at Cannes, or at the Oscars, I just love this kind of work.

Stunningly captured Jim, it's one of my favourite areas of Scotland. Guarded by the 17 mile long moat that is Loch Shiel, I always feel a sense of loneliness and solitude when I'm there. Beautiful 👍

Lovely film, and a place I'd love to visit in the fall. Can you comment on when this hike took place? Judging by the bracken, I thought late October, but would love to know more precisely. Thank you for all your effort to capture this on film.

Thank you. It was mid-November. Autumn was late this year and we didn't have as many gales as we normally have so the leaves (especially the oak) were still on the trees well into November. And it was unusually green in places still. Thank you for watching.
