• ROUTE GUIDE
Sgurr Mor is one of the most remote Munros (mountain over 3000ft) in Scotland. I hiked over from Strathan at the head of Loch Arkaig to spend two nights in the lonely bothy at Kinbreack. It was so cold, maybe -10, and my water bottle froze even inside the bothy with the fire lit. To be fair, the fire was pretty pathetic. I carried in a bag of logs for two nights which didn't last very long.
The next day I climbed onto Sgurr an Fhuarain (901m) 06:04 and then along the ridge to the summit of Sgurr Mor (1003m) 09:33. There was plenty of snow and it was good to get the crampons and ice axe out.
As you can see in the film there was a beautiful cloud inversion and wonderful views as far as Ben Nevis 10:57, Mull and Skye. The mountains to the west of Sgurr Mor are the Knoydart hills 10:47 with the prominent pyramidal peak of Sgurr na Ciche 10:27 dominating the view. Knoydart is very special to me as I lived there for seven years, working as a countryside ranger.

• MOUNTAIN SAFETY
Remember that hiking and mountain climbing can be dangerous. The videos on my channel are for entertainment only (other than where specified). Always prepare well and be willing to abandon a trip if it becomes dangerous due to weather or unexpected trail conditions. If you are new to hiking and the great outdoors it's always a good idea to go with a guide or a more experienced companion. And remember - give the wildlife some space, leave no trace, go quietly and enjoy it out there!
• A word on DRONES
I know how annoying it can be to hear a drone whizzing about when you are trying to enjoy the peace and solitude of wild places. I'm also aware of the potential to disturb wildlife with them. I always avoid flying the drone when there are other hikers around. It's one of the reasons I tend to hike at less popular times of day and in mid-week and I avoid using the drone if I do see others nearby. I never fly a drone towards wildlife or where birds are likely to be nesting.

Dear Jim, Watched your simply beautiful film, sent a little donation. All that ice gave me a warm feeling - those columnar crystals at 8.43, the fringed tongues of ice at 1.34, the falsely warm-looking sunset ice at 11.29, the congealing air round those stags. Maybe you can put some ice into something warming. RB.

Thanks Jonny. It's a fantastic ridge. My original plan was to keep on going along the ridge to Sgurr nan Coireachan but the snow made it slow going. That combined with the short daylight hours and I soon realised I was being overly ambitious! Always there for another day. Maybe a summer outing.

Hi Jim Awesome video fantastic views especially of Sgurr and ciche with Eigg poking over its shoulder brilliant photography. I did same some years back and used the brilliant bothy kinbreck. Had a nightmare getting to it over the col it was very boggy at the time and a steep pull up and over to bothy what a wonderful glen glen kingie is and Sgurr Mor a favourite thanks for sharing mate

Thanks Andrew. Yes, I can see that the walk over from Strathan would be very very boggy usually. Fortunately for me the ground was frozen and rock hard so no bogginess for me. Was also a shame to see so many ATV tracks all over the place on the saddle. It's been churned up really badly.

I’ve yet to do Sgurr Mor and that film has certainly wetted my appetite. We are going to do it this year by boat across loch Quoich. I’ll be working my way thru the rest of your videos Jim, but thanks very much for sharing this. ATB Frank

Thanks Frank and thanks for subbing! That would be great to approach Sgurr Mor from the north. I could see a pretty good track coming from the north between Sgurr an Fhuarain and Gairich. Although I guess you could also get a boat to Core Reidh near the west end of Loch Quoich. Looks like a stalkers' path marked on the OS map there.

The NHS should prescribe your videos for punters with depression. Absolute dillion of a wee video. Knoydart aswell, that wee Bothy would’ve been Baltic as the fire didn’t look up to much. You have to be experienced in the countryside for there…. Says the guy that’s only walked up Tinto Hill! Great achievement all the same. Well done on the videography and the climbs👍
