An SGM would be any GM that has ever appeared in a Candidates tournament, minus the wild cards invited by the organisers. And since there is one candidates with just 7 people qualifying for the designation every 2 years, SGM would not be subject to rank inflation.

Underrated comment
I think part of the reason Hikaru is so good is because he has supreme confidence in being stronger than his opponent, but in some ways this might be his biggest weakness. When he loses that, either against Magnus or Stockfish or Komodo, it causes him to slightly change his style of play and likely weakens his strength. I've seen a few games were Hikaru played cheaters and he did not seem to think he was significantly worse until pretty late in the game (unlike in these games were he's talking about resigning on like move 14). The players I named are still likely objectively better than him, but that's not the point. The point is that you kind of defeat yourself if you believe you have no hope you can even draw.
@theWebWizrd
4 жыл бұрын
That's not at all why he talked about resigning so early though. It's because against a human, there is always a chance - in fact, a very big chance - that the human will blunder at some point and you get back into the game. We've seen so many times when Hikaru plays that even against GMs there are opportunities for tactics. Against a computer there will never be a successful tactic ever. That's why he might as well resign - there will never be a way back into the game. If you get behind, it's just over. Even cheaters will not be able to keep up when they are short on time (and obviously, Hikaru doesn't know they're cheating).
@soflynn22
4 жыл бұрын
Maybe - there is some truth to what you say here. He did seem to lose hope quickly here. But Hikaru is so consistent beating other top players, regularly adopting other granmasters. I think it’s partly that kamodo and Carlsen are just that good
@num8ers711

Chess is, in my opinion, a psychological warfare. That is why it's difficult to play well against engines because you are aware that they have no doubts and play the absolute best, if not good moves. And because of that, you don't doubt them, too. On top of all that, it means that the pressure is on you and only you.

Would love to see you try and face full strength Leela. Her style is so much more entertaining for humans.
@rykehuss3435
2 жыл бұрын
Leela has some rather quirky end-game issues. Atleast used to not so sure about with current networks. Like missing mate in 6 and instead dancing around the board for 20 moves straight when it was mate in 6.. A mate which SF12 back then wouldve found in a about 1 second
@alanhuang3005
2 жыл бұрын
@@rykehuss3435 The “issues,” while certainly annoying for humans, are direct results of how leela is programmed. Leela is programmed to maximize a heuristic it defines as “win rate.” If the winrate is close enough to 100%, it has trouble finding the fastest mate because all options (dancing around as well as mating) result in a near 100% winrate. I’d argue however that it doesn’t take anything away from leela’s strength. At least I haven’t seen a case where leela’s antics resulted in a loss/draw when it was supposed to be easily mating.
@adamwu4565
2 жыл бұрын
@@alanhuang3005 A human would likely respond to Leela's endgame fiddling by just resigning (or flat out rage quitting) so it doesn't really change much in the outcomes in games against humans.
@alanhuang3005
2 жыл бұрын
@@adamwu4565 that’s true, but I would even go so far as to say that it doesn’t change the outcome when playing against itself (assuming it has already been training pst the point of diminishing returns)
@adamwu4565
2 жыл бұрын
@@alanhuang3005 Yes that is also true. It basically doesn't change the outcome of the game at all from Leela's perspective, because the win percentage remains the same (or even higher because the likelihood of stalemate often drops as a result), at least until the 50 move rule starts coming into play. And Leela has infinite patience, so it doesn't care if the win takes 10 moves or 49 moves. It also, from a computing science perspective, demonstrates one aspect in which neural nets like Leela are still inferior to humans. When humans learn to play chess, we can juggle multiple optimization standards at once. We learn not just to maximize winning probability but we also can factor in rapidity of victory, aesthetic elegance of the winning sequence, sportsmanship, and a whole host of other factors, all at once, but Leela can only optimize for one. It is also a deliberate design choice on the part of Leela's programmers, because fixing the issue is relatively easy. (One could just give Leela an endgame tablebase, for example, like we give to other Chess Engines) but if we did so, then Leela would cease to be a "zero net" that learns without any human input.

Next: Hikaru’s engine Ceiling vs Lizard
At 1:16 Komodo castles with both hands.
That thumbnail is a cultural masterpiece.

Yup sad miss
Major respect for Hikaru playing this match. it is really interesting to see. Other GMs are too scared to publicly play computers.

to me that's pretty sad that top level gms are that scared. that's chess for you. naka is the only one with balls.
This is actually what it feels like playing against Hikaru or GM's in general xD
Never close so fast a video from Hikaru to watch another Hikaru's video

It's like watching a Hikaru video
Speaking to an AI like: "come on boy, take with the pawn"
31:36 yes, we're still smarter than computers 0 - 10 xD hahah
59:40 finally,he understands my struggle
Would be good to see you beat it just once if you haven't before on camera! It's demoralizing playing these silicon beasts, thanks for showing us!
Hikaru playing humans: I could flag him, but that's a little mean Hikaru playing bots: if he dies, he dies
I think you might have had that first game for a moment of at least a draw. And to everyone else this Komodo at it's best level would do the same thing to Carlsen and every other chess player in the world. I feel like when I play my chess program which is way lower than Komodo, after It beats me over and over then I go play real people I tend to play quite well against them. But man I can only play so many games against the computer before I just feel like jeez, no matter what I do it beats me :)
31:21 why does Hikaru day “en peasant” instead of “en pessant”? Hikaru often mispronounces words too, like does he do it on purpose? I’m sure he knows the correct way to say them 😂

actually very insightful to watch a super gm being destroyed by engine.
3:54 - "I don't understand what computer is doing" Just gave you some hope before brutally crush you to the ground.
Its crazy, because Hikaru is just a brilliant chess player and Komodo just absolutely crushes him. These chess engines are insanely strong.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate that one of the greatest chess players in history volunteered to be eviscerated over and over by an unbeatable Ubermensch for our entertainment? What a time to be alive. Like, in all seriousness this is amazing. Utterly unique content. Thanks Hikaru!

"Why is it playing good moves? It's not fair" Hikaru, now you know how your opponents feels.😂😂

That's why it played the queen move on 38:04. This way it could choose between Kf4 and Bxg6, and there was no way to prevent both threats. There wasn't any good way to prevent either threat, actually. Hikaru thought Komodo didn't see it but it actually saw the idea he thought of PLUS an additional idea which he totally missed. I suspect it's the same with other situations where Hikaru thought he'd "tricked" the computer. In reality, it probably just saw more than what he saw and decided not to go with Hikaru's ideas because it considered them to be inferior.

@@maxkho00 Jesus man engines are scary.
It may sound weird, but watching hikaru get adopted by komodo gives me hope because it means that even one of the very best players in the world isn't even close to understanding chess fully and that means there is way more room to grow in chess for humans than we can imagine.
Hikaru: Okay, we're clogging up this side of the board! Robot: Maybe to a puny flesh bag...
