High Voltage from Fluorescent Bulb

Ғылым және технология

Amazing Pens! : hobblecreekcraftsman.com
In today's video we learn how to make a high voltage power supply from a CFL bulb. This power supply will likely burn out after a while of use, but it's pretty simple! The current is likely around 20 mA and the voltage is likely around 15-25 kv from my estimations. If you can't get it to work, try putting a capacitor from the extra filament tab(s) to the Flyback Transformer tab. Thanks guys and be safe! :)

Hey, isn't CFL-circuit's output also AC so that it can drive transformer? I had a couple problems with setup like this. First, all my CFL circuits could detect if there was a tube attached and worked only if it was. I found that putting a capacitor across a pair of pins attached to the same end of the tube (to heat electrodes?) works fine, and shorting them with alligator clip did the job too. Next, if i play with HV more than few minutes, transformer on a circuit starts getting very hot and then something on the bottom side burns up/explodes (i think some CMD resistor gets damaged by heat). How can i work around the overheating? Maybe a circuit from more powerful bulb would last longer before dying? or was it that i shorted these pins?

The DC versions have the Cockroft-Walton array inside of them, while the AC versions have it outside as a separate unit. It is an interesting voltage multiplier which can be made into any number of stages resulting in multiplying AC voltages (into DC) by any number you want. This device can be used to feed a Marx generator for really high pulse voltages.

I'm a welder, and I think after seeing this video, it would be cool for you to make a video with a power supply of this nature, to create a small, portable, welder. Nothing extravagant, just something that could tack together something thin, like 20 gage sheet metal. Either that, or make a battery powered, plasma, soldering iron. Either of those would make my day lol.

But the arks are very small, they do not even get to stretch 1 centimeter and the datasheet of my converter says that this produces 26 KV. Could it be because my fluorescent light bulb is small? It's no where near efficient because resonant frequencies of CFL LC tank and flyback don't match. It will drive power through a Flyback but not efficiently like the DC square wave the TV circuit uses that is at the 15 kHz or so flyback resonant frequency, unless it's a computer monitor/small TV flyback which can be 30-45 kHz or more. Most CFL's operate anywhere from 25 kHz up to 100 kHz, but avoid the 32 kHz range so as to not interfere with remote controls.

Nice work. I love the way you explain everything with their proper working science. Bro I've a suggestion for you- If you connect a starter(it was used with old fluorescent ballast that had only two output pins for the tubelighr)in parallel with the primary coil then the output will be 2x higher in terms of voltage. You can use it with flourescent ballast or even with cfl ballast. But I don't know the reason for it's working. If you could please explain it explain it I'll be happy. I have a question- is it necessary that the primary of the flyback has the highest resistance? When I connect the input of the flyback to the first two pins from the right (U) the arc is 1 mm long but when I connect the input to the 1st and 3rd pin from the right then the arc is 1.5cm long. Is it that the primary is the coil between 1st and the 3rd pin from the right?

nice arcing the one you achieved, mine turned out shorter using a 30 watt ballast and a flyback transformer found in a 20 something inch CRT. Why is it that when adding a capacitor between both primaries in the flyback I got longer arcs but the cfl circuit died as soon as I stretched the arc far enough to leave the circuit open?

+Erick Eagle yes, you can make a trimmer capacitor, try getting 2 plastic cups and putting tinfoil halfway around each, attach wires and place one cup inside the other, as you turn the cup so that the tinfoil becomes more or less overlapping it will change the capacitance! You could also just use a set capacitance value and calculate the frequency it will broadcast at from the formula I showed! Hope this helped ! :D

Hi Keystone! I have been reading some information about T.T. Brown (Thomas Townsend Brown.). His experiments involved using high voltage 20,000 volts and higher with conductive materials inlaid with non conductive materials (as in metal and wood held together with beeswax in 8 alternated layers) to create a force that caused it to move. Is that actually a thing? Can high voltage create a force that can propel an object? If so. Can you show is how that works? I ask a lot I know. But it sounds so cool! Thanks KS! You're the best!

The stable purple arc looks more like AC. Normally, with DC high voltage, the arc is irregular and loud. Is it possible the tripler in this high voltage transformer was not working? I made similar high voltage device from compact fluorescent. I let the fluorescent connected as a way to indicate that the circuit is still working. I connect the primary of the CRT high voltage transformer in series with the main inductance of the compact fluorescent.. Doing this, there is no question about overloading any part of the electronic. I like the videos you made (I just found a link today, watched about 5 videos). Contrary to many other youtuber, your projects are working for real. It is not click bait with clever video editing. I would like if you would use the standard 10^3 names for resistances, frequency, etc. For example, 5 kilo ohm instead 5 thousand ohm (or say both if you think it would allow other users to understand better).

The second ballast was 14W (woopty doo) and it instantly start humming and throwing 3cm pink and purple arcs. I backed the wires further apart and at 4cm it stops the arc but continues with both tips creating angry corona fans. Backed it to 6cm and still corona hiss fanning out and angry hum. I wanted this thing for a few KV. I can go fire up the CO2 laser power supply for this angry stuff. Any ideas on the quickest way to tone it down? There is corona even coming off the bottom of the flyback.

No, if you hook the output of one CFL to the mains input of another you will fry the other, most spectacularly. You can't use them in parallel either. If you want more power go with a higher wattage CFL, or go with a true flyback driver like the ZVS driver. I've used a 55 watt large CFL circuit, equivalent to a 300 watt incandescent lamp, with some good results. An electronic ballast for large straight tube fluorescent lamps puts out a lot of power but only the largest and most robust flybacks can handle it without shorting out internally. If you do go with a more powerful driver please make sure you know what you're doing and be careful.

Does it have to be a fly back transformer or can it be a step up transformer

If it was just a regular step up transformer: A. You wouldnt even need the driver, just put in an AC current B. If it was a high voltage transformer (such as that of ignition coils, microwave transformers, or neon sign transformers) then it should work. However, if your transformer is not one of these, than you should get nowhere near the output voltage of the one shown in the video.

l make flyback from odd tv transformer driving it with 85w cfl but when l connected a capacitor across the primary the output voltage increases but suddenly the cfl blow, why did it happens so?

I did the same but continuous resistance to the problem of how to solve the problem, how to solve the problem until after the arc is up to 1-2 seconds

Ehh, voltage delivers it, but current is ultimate what kills, kind of? It’s really power so it can be viewed in so many ways, but ultimately the flow of electrons is what does it

Keystone Science Thanks for your answere! Yeah ur probably right since ur like really smart. I dont really know what im talking about so i’ll leave the job about electronics over to you, thanks again.

@@KeystoneScience as long as you don't have 60+ volts at high current, or more than 0.005 amperes at high voltage, you should be good.

i made a taser like the one you described in a different video, but instead of making lightning type arks, its making a high pitched squeaking and an ark just like this one. it can light things on fire, so im wondering why that might hapen.
