When I was a child living near Farnborough, being close to this wonderful airport was beyond every kids dream at the time. This was about 1957 ( sputnik time ) and the stuff that flew over our house ( at a lot closer height by the way! at about 100 feet ) was amazing. I got to see the Vulcan, the Victor, the Hawker Hunters, Vampires etc, and the most wonderful plane that has ever flown according to my child fantasy --- the Lightning! Why? because this damned thing could 'drift' like my son does in his skyline, ' and right over my head, as it did a very fast U turn to go back over the airdrome, so fast and so much power, and to top it off, SILVER all over, and that bloody incredible shape, ........way out !.

The aeroplane between 17 and 19 minutes is a Vickers Valetta T3 which was used as a basic navigation trainer. The domes on top of the fuselage were for sextant training. Together with the Vickers Varsity it was in service until well into the 1960s

Those were the good old days. Brilliant cast. I think Winchester would’ve been out on his ear before even started, in real life. 😂
The actor playing the inspecting officer Field Marshal Montgomery at 52:13 (uncredited) was Meyrick Edward Clifton James. He was also the actor who played himself acting as himself acting as Montgomery in the film "I was Monty's Double" 1958, well worth a watch, starring John Mills. Clifton James was part of Allied Forces deception plans against the Germans during World War 2. He was one of several Monty doubles I believe.

Learned that one when a kid on H M S Sanderling sixty odd years ago. Got bawled out by a P.O.,Nice old guy actually, never forgotton. All adults are old, when you are a nipper. The Former H M S Sanderling is Glasgow Airport now. The Former nearby Ordanance Factory at Bishopton is houses too. Sanderling used to be a big station,The Yanks and Canadians used to fly there on occasion. A nearby shipyard had a phone link,in case of unwary incomers due to its cranes. Long Gone.
Love this film, went into the RAF in 84 .
Gotta love the MG cameo at the beginning.
"Push button warfare and robot aircraft". A little dig at Duncan Sandys MP, who's view of the immediate future was that the EE Lightning would be the last manned fighter, and kiboshed so much research in the process.
Those dashing 50's low flying fighter jocks, the reason why we don't get any chicken milk any more.
In this movie the reluctant hero would been arrested and probably jailed for invading the air space of an RAF station and flying without a flight plan. Also in no way would he have got away with talking to a wing commander like he did. The film rolls out like a schoolboys comic.

A little bit after this (1983-1989) I was SAC Fireman. Was a naughty boy while stationed at RAF Binbrook with the lightnings and wound up on Jankers! After 10pm Orderly Officers inspection I nipped in the JR mess to scrounge a plate off the supper menu. Was not supposed to but the cook was OK as I had been frickaseeing the chicken for him earlier. Just as I set to eating ...IN WALKS THE SWO! I thought I would be on jankers for the rest of my career! He came and sat with me and the other "janker walla" who had come with me. Turned out to be a really decent man was around 12 months from retirement I think. He should not have been there either but, as he said, he preferred what we had on the menu that night and nothing further was said! He seemed as old as the hills to me. But, if "God" saw fit not to mention anything neither would I.
What a gem.

Co produced by Albert Broccoli, who would later on found Eon Productions, the makers of all the James Bond films. The actor who plays the Flight SGT in this film is Bernard Lee. Many know him as M from the Bond films up to For Your Eyes Only. I notice this has been recorded from the old TCM, before they went woke and tried to cater to a new demographic.
