Earlier in the movie, the Doc and Ensign Pulver had discussed Pulver’s plan of putting marbles in the ceiling of the captain’s cabin and as the ship rocked they would roll around and cause noise that would slowly drive the captain crazy. (Having had an empty beer bottle on my sailboat tucked away and rolling around for hours before we found it, I can attest to the maddening effect) The marbles at the end were just the successful completion of the prank at a higher level.

Very fine film from my childhood. Has that 1960s light comedy popular at the time. Navy spoofs were always the best.
I was aware of this movie, but had never seen it until now. Thanks for posting.
I saw this as a kid in Okinawa during the summer when I was 12 years old.
Classic from a time gone by !
A very young Jack Nicholson how cool is that?
Hilarious! I served on USCG Cutter Basswood stationed in Guam 1972. We visited many primitive Islands . So this movie did bring back some good memories. Thanks for this fun movie. 😂

This is unbelievable. Second time this week my device has read my mind and offered up a selection I was thinking about. In this case Mr. Roberts appeared on the scroll but it reminded me I had not seen Ensign Pulver in many years. Crazy. Between this movie and the tailoring scene from the Three Stooges it was all I could do not to "ride" my siblings on the steam press in our family dry cleaners.

Fun Facts: This movie was released the same year the stop motion animated Christmas special "Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer" first aired on television. Burl Ives voiced Sam the snowman. Robert Walker Jr. played Charlie in Star Trek original series season 1 episode 2 "Charlie X"
The first time I saw 'Ensign Pulver' was on TV around 1965 or in 1966 when I was 9/10 years old, and a couple of times in the later part of the 1960s. It has been maybe 40 or 50 years back when it was the last time I watched it on TV. Thank you Brad Garoon for uploading this classic film on KZread! Brought back some of my fond memories when I was a kid during the 1960s.
Great cast. Robert Walker, Walter Matthau, Burl Ives. Jack N. has a small part. Kate Medford and Peter Marshall were a surprise. And George Lindsey (Andy Griffeth show)
An excellent movie ❤❤
I watched Combat series again on KZread. Robert Walker Jr. played the title character in an episode named Ollie Joe. Claude Akins played his pal. Walker was a great actor.
What a great Movie, thanks very much Brad Garoon.
Loved this movie as a kid. Robert Walker later in 66, age of 26, was cast in Star Trek episode "Charlie X" a 17-year-old social misfit with psychic powers

Thanks for this
I think this was Burl Ives best performance ever. Next to Frosty the Snow Man, of course. He showed a range here that was amazing. The rest of the cast were great as well, but Ives created the mood.
A lot of famous actors in this

excellent movie bet ive seen it a 100 times
glad i never got stuck on a ship like this. we did one boring tour, making circles in the Arabian Sea and suppling the task force with fuel, food and ammo, although i dont know what the ammo was used for. was no training going on nor bombing runs. did have a Capt. once who volunteered us for everything, did get us out of the war FOR a little while.
A pale follow-up to Mr. Roberts

Robert Walker passed in 2019, remember him from Charlie's Fate episode on the original Star Trek series. He had a great career.

This is a Camano class cargo ship Same as the Actual USS Pueblo ! Pueblo held by North Korea , is the second oldest ship in the Navy after The sailing Ship USS Constitution .
I remember seeing this movie in the 60s. I guess I was 11 years old. I remember the mean captain, the crazy crew, surgery and the marbles. Wow life. Since then I served as a medic in the army. Not influenced by this movie, just my morale.
I find this film quite sad. The captain had a terrible childhood, his mother and himself being humiliated by those who had more money and power so he was determined to not to be walked on again.
Captain Bastard.😢
This movie isn't as good as the original, but there are some very good actors in the crew, like Walter Mathothow and Jack Nicholson, and Burl Ives. I have always thought it was one of the funniest movies ever.

I find it interesting that Walter Matthau would have a role in "Ensign Pulver" and Jack Lemmon would play Ensign Pulver, but the comedy duo would do so in separate movies.
Only in the 60s could you make a comedy with a sailor who's 18 month old daughter drowned, and he's acting like he's going on his honeymoon.
Damn movie is 60 years old, I wonder how many of the cast are still with us? Not many I guess.

I don’t get it about the marbles at the end. What does that mean
@glasshalffull2930
3 ай бұрын
Earlier in the movie, the Doc and Ensign Pulver had discussed Pulver’s plan of putting marbles in the ceiling of the captain’s cabin and as the ship rocked they would roll around and cause noise that would slowly drive the captain crazy. (Having had an empty beer bottle on my sailboat tucked away and rolling around for hours before we found it, I can attest to the maddening effect) The marbles at the end were just the successful completion of the prank at a higher level.

This film was a $1.298 version of Mr Roberts...which nobody could fill those shoes! Even though this films mentions the death of Mr Roberts, it follows the story line of Mr Roberts right down the line! Pretty generic Mr Roberts!😂

Captain 'Bligh' exposed to the U.S. Navy and Ensign Pulver... Great comedy but the 'natives' was to much Hollywood for me. The nurses plane crash was also to much Hollywood'sk. Any Navy ship picking up survivor's would look extra careful on all the islands...
Why the obsession with getting booze. Every navy that I know of had a rum ration, a wine ration of something similar in World War 2. Didn't the American navy issue drinks to sailors?
