As evidenced by this video the first Shrek almost entirely exists out of contempt for everything Disney so all of it's morales are dashed when you know that it's main aim is to maim Disney hence why they promote inner beauty for the leads but spite the lack of outward beauty that is shared by the antagonist.

You might notice that Farquad was the only one trying to constantly compensate for how he looked. When you're ashamed of something, it's easy for others to make fun of it. Shrek was constantly made fun of for being ugly, but he didn't care. He was proud of his ugliness. Donkey was constantly called annoying for talking, but he loved that he could talk.

I always assumed that it was because the Catholic minister lusts over little boys in dresses and Esmeralda looked like a French Transvestite . Plus they resolved that in the sequel where he found a girl who was insecure enough to fall in love with him.

I watched Shrek, Shrek 2 & Shrek the Third yesterday. This makes me so happy.

"I can't breathe. I can't breathe!" got me rolling XD

I don't think it looks that bad. It certainly holds up better than a lot of other 3D animated stuff from the early 2000s. I feel like you could still show the first Shrek to kids now and they'd probably think it would be fine.
