I think "Shrek 1: I like being a scary ogre!" would be more apt. He went and saved Fiona because the fairytale creatures didn't fear him and were squatting on his turf. After spending time with Fiona he fell in love and wanted to be with her, but at the start he only intended to be her escort. There never was a turning point were Shrek decided he no longer wanted to be feared by the townspeople.

Daragh O'kane I’d say it’s more like he loves being a scary ogre but it’s not like everyone wants to do something they love all the time. Like even if he wanted a break from being a scary ogre, it’s never an option for him and that probably gets draining after awhile.

If you'll remember, in the first movie, he was intentionally playing the part of a "scary ogre" largely for reasons that Schaffrillas talked about in his Shrek 2 video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/a4Kfmdtvk5S6n9o.html). Shrek thought that that was just his lot in life, where everyone saw him & treated him as a monster. And because of that, he played the part for it, and even believed it himself, somewhat. He did it partially to stick it to the people who treated them that way in an act of stubborn defiance, but mostly because it just seemed pointless NOT to. But, if you'll remember, he also had FUN with it. "This is the part where you run away." *laughs as all of them scramble away screaming* "Oh, really? You, and what army?" *smug look* Even though he hated it overall, there was a unique aspect of it that he enjoyed, and it made sense that a large part of him would get nostalgic for what he could no longer have, while forgetting or downplaying what he hated about it, at least during his mid-life crisis... thing. I think most people have nostalgia for at least one long crappy period in their lives or another after it's over. Missing all of the spare time and relatively small worries you had when you were in middle or high school as compared to an adult is probably the most common irl example, but there are tons of others. It's honestly realistic. tl;dr it's actually realistic because sadly, in reality, people often want contradictory things, and also nostalgia goggles.

Shrek 4 was actually a great film. Shrek had everything he’s ever wanted and it made him feel like his life was over in a way. It’s not supposed to be another great metaphor or satire of anything, just a continuation of a character’s life and story. Shrek had it all then lost it all only to realize he truly was happy even if he himself didn’t know it

I think the 4th was amazing from an entirely story telling point. Maybe it does not fit in the philosophy presented the first 2 movies (the third does not exist), but it does not have to. They explored the last question in our characters journey: After you got everything you wanted and you fought for, now what? Life becomes dull to Shrek he never really got used to the whole parenting thing and being popular, so he wished to change everything. The move makes our characters live a life without each other, they realize why they ended up together on the beginning and they fight again to gain each other back. I also liked the deeper exploration between Shrek and Fiona's relationship. I thought it was a good movie to end the franchise, and it might not be deep, but I don't think is a story made for us to ponder much about its message, I really believe the story was made for the characters.

  • @FraserSouris

    @FraserSouris

    2 жыл бұрын

I'd buy that, but it still has to adjust what we know of the characters to even function. Like, Shrek 1 and 2 Fiona's whole deal was that the conventional view of happiness isn't accurate to everyone. Even ignoring that, if the film is going to ignore the philosophy of its predecessors just to say "nah, the status quo is good", then I ask why the film needs to be made? Like, Imagine a video game like say Call of Duty, that's always been a first person shooter. But the lastest game is now a driving game. Even if it's a great driving game, you ask why it had to be one?

Shrek is selfish for not caring how his friends, family, and wife feels. If Shrek thinks his life is becoming a joke he should have opened up. As opposed to signing a life changing contract without even consulting Fiona. Even if she wasn’t upset Shrek would even think of signing the contract she would’ve pointed the flaws Shrek neglected to notice.

To me I think the problem with why Shrek changed so drastically after the second movie was because they didn't have any of the original people behind the first two movies. In the first shrek they had Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio, Joe Stillman, and Roger Schulman as the writers. It was also directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson. In the second movie at least 3 of the 4 writers left but still had Joe Stillman and had Andrew Adamson in place of both writer and director. And that's also not mentioning the producers which they still brought 2 of 3 over from the second movie. Go over to the third and fourth. None of the people that were involved in the first or second movie had any involvement whatsoever. Unless you want to count story credit by Andrew Adamson. But that's it.

Not to take away any fire OP but what you point out here is how a lot of people feel about the simpsons after seasons 7-8 as the core members and writing staff from the early seasons were almost gone which shows in the quick decline in quality of story telling as well as the ratings.

Andrew Adamson had limited commitments with Shrek the Third. But he had bigger commitments with the first Cronicles of Narnia movie. Well as everyone else I guess wanted to move on. Even when you look at the people from the third and fourth movie, they have completely different people again. I'm thinking maybe it's a case of DreamWorks wanting to make more Shrek movies for the sake of having good bank.

I always saw the ending of Shrek the Third as society accepting the flaws in everyone and that people can be more than the labels society puts on them. With Fiona and Lilian turning the other princess from Damsels in Distress into total badasses; Arthur going from social outcast to effective leader; and the villains learning that they don’t have to do bad stuff just because society expects them to.

I feel this message is undermined because there's still a specific "conventional" place people have to go to. Like, in Shrek 1, Shrek's happiness didn't come from him continuing to live alone. It was how his particular lifestyle and character got through to others and how they got through to him. In contrast Arthur doesn't become an effective leader by embracing what makes him unique. He just becomes a new generic king.

Do the last two movies undercut the thesis of the first two or do they admit nuance in the subject matter? Self-Acceptance, tolerance, and individualism are all great things as the first two film convey. However, just like ogres, good thesis's have layers. Shrek 3 and 4 admit that all they said before is true, but the issues are more nuanced then first presented. None of those things are a binary or absolute good. Taken to an extreme, self-acceptance can sometimes lead us to give up other things we value, like self-fulfillment and self-actualization (i.e. somewhere down the line the "villains" accepted they were "bad people" and stopped trying to be their best self). Taken to an extreme, individualism can sometimes lead us to isolate ourselves and forget about the needs of others (i.e. Shrek priorities his own happiness over his wife's or children's in Shrek 4 and ends up all alone and more miserable than before). Obviously that isn't to say that self-acceptance and individualism are "bad", the whole series laughs at that label in general, just complicated. That is something about philosophy that can be frustrating to many people, the inconclusiveness of nuance, the complexity of multi-layered argument, the unsatisfying nature of faceted issues. All of the above doesn't give us the rush of having our opinions validated, but perhaps we come out of it a little more informed then we were before.

Personally I thought Shrek 3 was deep, or at least had the potential to be deep. The core conflict is the villains wanting happily ever afters, and Arthur's speech saying they can make their own happy endings by putting aside their evil ways isn't so much reinforcing the idea of good/bad moral binary as much as it is deconstructing the concept of good/bad moral binary and emphasizing free will. Granted theirs a lot more that could have been done; exploring how villains became villains as victims of circumstance, emphasizing how Arthur's reign will be marked with honest efforts to reform the criminal element and reintegrate them into society rather than to punish and ostracize them, maybe even a support group throwaway gag in the credits.

I think you got it right. Thematically, it broke away from the other movies so far by saying villains must do good to achieve their happy endings. Yet from a realistic POV, it implies that those people we called crooks can be a part of our society again and it began first within themselves as a choice.

Charming needed Shrek to play the part of a villain in order to look more heroic. Charming needed for people to see Shrek as a villain - ergo the play. Charming was trying to define Shrek as a villain so that the murder of him seems noble and good and Charming can project the image of himself that he wants people to buy. They are villains because someone else needed them to be villains, someone else benefitted from their villainhood. Charming promised them revenge for their mistreatment, but he needed them to stay villains - he could not let them stop being villains. It is about whether you are what someone else wants you to be or what you want to be. Charming offered them the opportunity for revenge and some of the perks they missed out on. Arthur offered them the opportunity to not let others define them - to decide for themselves who they are. Ok want to be - are - one can argue either one.

Well, you chose a very specific interpretation of the first two movies. Some have argued that movies are about following 1: Shrek is afraid, of being loved. 2: Shrek is afraid, of being husband. 3: Shrek is afraid, of being a father 4: Shrek is afraid, of losing his identity In which case this is one of only series that actually has a meaning full story progression. Agree with the first 3 labels but think the 4th movie is just as consistent as the first two. It’s a reversal. About someone who is going through a mid life crisis and wants a break, but screws up and is manipulated into a far worse situation. And while I agree it has issues, Shrek ultimately accepts his fate in the end, comes to terms with the fact he can never go back to the scary ogre he once was, and fully realizes that even if he could go back, he wouldn’t be happy. Like the first two movies, Shrek makes the choice to be himself, rather than force a reversal to who he once was. He’s not being asked to sacrifice the things that made him happy... he feels as though the responsibility and relationships he has acquired prevent him from being his version of ogre gives him most happiness. Shrek thinks he can only be happy if he is a “real” ogre... and the conflict is created by his perception of what it means to be a “real” ogre. In the first movie Shrek believed ogres were characterized as care free, intimidating, terrifying, loner, filthy creatures, who were beholden to no one. Throughout the course of this movie he learns that ogres can be many different things, including fiercely loyal, joyous, goal driven, with a seeming preference for group/familial ties. His change is perception of what it meant to be a “real” ogre showed me him that no one was asking him not to be happy... rather, his prejudice made him feel as though he betrayed his race and therefore he could not be happy. Once he accepted that he was still an ogre, he allowed himself to appreciate the life he had built with Fiona... all while embracing his true nature while rejecting societal expectations... but at the end of the day... this is a cartoon that makes my kids smile, laugh, and for the most part shows my daughter that being a helpless damsel is bullshit and to stand up for herself, and that’s all I need.

I think "shrek forever after" continues the trend about the demystification of perfection that the first two movies set, this time in a deeper level since shrek is supposed to have achieved happiness after he and fiona have accepted their imperfection, but he faces the true that there is not perfect happiness, and happiness in real life is just a effimerous mental state that wears off against the reality. The lesson taught here is that the life must be accepted as it is, and happiness will come and go, as well as everything else in life.

Shrek Forever After is a film that deserves way more credit then it gets, as it shows an emotional side to Shrek, and tells us, that we should be grateful for lives we live, that we built. The villian Rumpelstiltskin is also hilarious, cunning and evil and is someone that constantly challenged Shrek through his cunning schemes, where the other villians in Shrek 1 & 2 were also fantastic they are more like antagonists, that only mentally challenge our heroes and move the overall plot forward. While Rumpelstiltskin not only moves the overall plot forward, he challenges Shrek on all fronts mentally, physically and emotionally. I fully understand the criticisms of the film that you ou ty lined, but dismissing this message of the film is dishonourable and superficial. The availed mentioned criticisms (in my opinion), don't effect the overall storyline.

hmm I would like to challenge the third and 4th shriek movies and your opinion, for the third shriek movie remember he did not want the power of the king thus seeking out a someone more suited to fit that narrative, the nephew who been already cultivated for that role by that same society , and since the society is undergoing a new change in both the way things were (lost of the fairy god mother) means the villains also part of that society, lost of directions and purpose in their own lives. Villains at this point could be a symbol of rejecting change. which Shrek himself did not want to be, a agent of change, but rather someone younger and more suited to fit that role for that kingdom. I agree the jokes seems to be played out consider 3 to me is still deep, Fairy tales always sell the hero to be the eventual ruler. but shriek still pulled a fart to that. And as for the 4th one shriek himself now is undergoing change (growing up) a mid life crisis if you will, he gotten everything he wanted symbolized and a loving wife, and family, no longer lonely but is rejecting that for the individual mindset he has those destroying what was being built everything he accepted to reject it in a old habit that didn't serve him in the new life . That was making around him, not accepting the very change that is happening around him, rejecting growth. Both films in my opinion are both narratives about change and growth and thus they are deep on that end at least for me .
