Hidden Gems London Walking Tour 4 : Trafalgar Square - Whitehall
Quirky London Walks 4 : Trafalgar Square and Whitehall
This is a short walk for anyone who is in the area and has some time to kill. Starting at Trafalgar Square Joolz talks about London's Smallest Police Station, Nelson's Column, a big blue cock and how Walt Disney got the idea for Burt in Mary Poppins.
Then over to King Charles's statue, which kept getting moved around and stands in the exact centre of London.
Across the road to Admiralty Arch and one of the famous Noses of Soho.
Learn also how London got its pavements and what the curious mark on the kerb stone in Whitehall means. Then up Whitehall to Banqueting House where King Charles had his head chopped off!

Joolz Guides are so addicting. I'm just watching one right after the other.
Police officer:" Do it when it's not so busy"! You:" But it's always busy!"... brilliant information
That cravat is pure class. Such exquisite taste Joolz has.
I'm from Ireland and I must say I really enjoy Joolz Guides..very informative!
The more I watch of these the more deeply I appreciate them. Entertaining and educational. I come back and re-watch each 3 or 4 times, just to get it all. The time and effort in researching and production organizing is obviously enormous. Joolz has 49K subscribers but at this writing, less than 75 Patreon supporters. A microscopic pittance in comparison to their value !! I invite other subscribers to make at least a small effort to rectify this imbalance.
I love how you keep accepting people with historical facts in this one and even get in trouble with the law!
And this is way I wish I was a Londoner..... Love to all Brittons.
you forget to drink the beer in the end of this movie ;-)
Hi Joolz, what a cheerful and informative channel you've created!! Very fun and interesting to watch, keep up the good work!
I love this series, thank you!!

You're welcome! Don't forget to tel your friends!
Julian, I went to London for the first time last October 2018. My friends were so annoyed with me, because everywhere we went I kept spouting little odd facts about the places 😂 I just re-watched this video and LOVE it! I'm taking my 18yr nephew to London March 2020. I will definitely look for the. Noses of SoHo.
You should be commissioned by the Discovery channel and do a few hour long episode. I wish I could pay you as I am fascinated by your knowledge. Very interesting, thank you.
Tut tut, in trouble with the police. :)

I got yelled at today in Grand Central Terminal for walking to the end of a platform to get a view of the converging train tracks. But there wasn’t a sign or line or anything. I told the man I was an enthusiast. I only wound up with a picture of my finger. And one of my leg. And I deleted both of them

Any chance of doing a video guide of Tottenham joolz?. We've got Bruce castle home to the inventor of the penny post ,the river's moselle ,and lea seven sisters and also the place where Harry Champion lived for much of his life
Oh, that’s a good one! I have a cousin, now retired from the force, who spent many years on 10 Downing St, back in the days when one could walk right up the street, stand out front, take photos, & watch people going in & coming out. One day, we were walking through Trafalgar Square, & he showed me the little structure that is London’s smallest police station. You are the only other person I have heard mention it. 👍🙋♀️🥂 Very nice!!
9:40 - Thank you Joolz! 🙂
I ❤️ trafalgar Square!
Jules is very charming, even the police can't get angry at him.

The clock in the Horse Guards Parade archway has a black smudge at 2:00. That mark signifies the time of day when the King was beheaded.
My wife and I are headed to London this September, and I've overloaded on details watching your videos now, Joolz. We're going to be walking along, and I'll suddenly go off about a weathervane or a parish boundary marker or mailbox... She'll wonder how I know all these little facts about London.
This channel is amazing don’t understand why it hasn’t got well over a million subs. Iv been watching this channel for hours and hours recently
I wasn't a big fan at first, but something kept pulling me back to your videos and now I really REALLY enjoy watching you.

I like how when he Joolz says 'Mel Gibson' the subtitles say 'William Wallace'
I have climbed the lions at Trafalgar Square so many times, and sat on the backs of the lions. Ahhh, memories.
When I return for a visit I shall ring you. I am glad that I discovered your videos as London is my very favorite mega-city. Washington DC and Berlin are my favorite mid size cities. Heidelberg is my favorite smaller city. I have not seen Scotland nor Manchester which I hear is very cool.
Good information once again - Liked.

The Eleanor Cross outside of Charing Cross station is a replica (that nasty Henry 8th again). That's why many people are confused and wrongly believe that measurements to London are to Charing Cross station.
Always enjoy your videos. So informative! Would love to see one on Belgravia. Or have I missed it?

I was a bit disappointed when you were at Trafalgar you didn't point out St Martins in the Fields. I think it was in the background when you showed the giant blue chicken.
So good
The smallest police station you saw wasn’t just a Police station it was also an early version of the police telephone box and the lantern would light up and make a ringing noise as it called the police

Nelson is looking in the direction of his ship, the Victory, in Portsmouth.
jools is that mark on the pavement not an ordnance survey trig point that was used for for surveying?
Nelson's "Fleet" The lamp posts lining The Mall From Buckingham Palace to Trafalgar all have a ship atop. Each one is named and each one took par tin the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson's statue in the Square looks down the Mall at his "fleet"

The base of the column is pointed SSE, however Nelson's head is turned to his right which is SSW. I drew a line approximating the direction of his gaze and, if extended far enough, goes toward the waters off Cape Trafalgar in Spain, the site of his victory.
Did you know that the imperial measurements for length are beside the wall on the National Gallery side of the Square. Before building started on the Victoria Line Tube a group of engineers had to verify the steel bands, (not the empty oil barrel drums} these are steel measuring tapes that are held under tension using an old fashioned hand held weight scale. Reading would be taken by an engineer at both ends, 3 readings would be taken and the average used as the final reading.
Remarkable similarity between King Charles I and Tony Robinson, don't you think?
Gets bailed up by the cops😂 and I never knew that Charles got his head chopped off there at Whitehall and I’ve walked up that street many times

You missed the standard imperial measures in Trafalgar Square and that the lions have cat paws.

I don't know why but I'm always doing something wrong.
I bet the pigeons in Trafalgar Square I thinking where is all the people during this lockdown
That's quite ungracious of Charles not forgiving his executioner - that was the common practice since medieval times. It's not the executioner's fault, he's just doing his job. In fact aristocrats would often tip their executioner to make sure they did a good job and took off the head with one blow. It took three chops to sever Mary Queen of Scots' head, during which she was still alive.
Julian you should be knighted amazing knowledge

😁👍👏👏👏
I’m watching these in order from your page, why does it go from Walking Tour 2 to Walking Tour 4 🤷🏻♂️
Maybe after lockdown is lifted and visitors are down to far less than normal we Londoners might be able to enjoy our own city again without the overwhelming crowds of mass tourism - well it won’t last of course but hopefully a year or two would be great.
shame you didn't go off slightly to old scotland yard and whitehall court
Love your videos. Very informative. However, I have to differ on one point and that’s what you termed an admiralty mark on that kerb stone. I think it’s a benchmark which used to be chiselled into solid locations to mark fixed surveyed points which could be used in future surveys. They can be found all over the UK and used to be recorded on Ordnance Survey maps together with the height or other relevant information.
@Joolzguides
5 жыл бұрын
hi. Thanks. I'm glad you pointed that out. I have often wondered about all those marks on the stones. I thought they were stone masons marks. I read this about the admiralty in a book and I rather liked the story. I shall continue to believe it's true since it does no harm. Most of my videos are about myths and stories that I heard "down the pub" and local rumours so there are a few errors. I'm going to hang onto this one for now though!

@@Joolzguides G'day, I think you will find its not an anchor but rather a broad arrow symbol, which was used to denote government property. Colonial Australia was covered with them.

Daniel Alcon the broad arrow is used to denote government property - most commonly encountered on equipment of the armed forces.

Yes. This is known in heraldry as a Pheon and more commonly the Broad Arrow. It was used by the British government starting in the 19th century. It was adopted by the War Department as well and can often be found on case markings of British Munitions.
I'm going to London after 33 years this July. Anyone has good ideas I would like to see. Please let me know.
The lamp on top of the police hut would flash when the police station control room needed to attract attention of the police officers in the Square to inform them of ?? well what ever they needed to be informed of... there was a phone inside..
Sure at least one of the noses of Soho isn't Nosey Parker's?
The stone plinth under the “south-west” lion has fire spall damage still visible from a fire lit by a crowd in connection with the First World War.
Charles I looks short cause he was only 5'4
