Places to Visit in London Outside the Centre - Primrose Hill - London History

If you want non touristy things to do in London how about a delightful walking tour of Primrose Hill, one of London's most splendid places to visit in London outside the centre. One of the most serene and beautiful neighbourhoods in London. Joolz (that's me) is a Londoner born and bred and loves to show people around and tell you his personal problems too (if you'll listen).
Subscribe on KZread ➜ / joolzguides
Julian McDonnell, your favourite London Guide and tourism film maker, starts at Chalk Fram Station where Madness took the photo for the cover of Baggy Trousers. Chalk Fram is also the location of the Winchester Club in Minder.
From there he takes you over Chalk Farm Bridge and down Regent's Park Road and into the village of Primrose Hill which has many cafes.
Then over Primrose Hill itself, which features in H.G. Wells War of the Worlds and donw towards Cecil Sharpe House, the Regents Canal and ultimately ending at The Landsdowne Pub.

There is another guy who does London videos who managed to get on Amazon prime. You are in a different league to his ones . I don't know if he was approached or if he approached them. Have you looked in to that ? I watch a lot of travel type documentarys and I must say that you'd be perfect for a TV show doing this or something similar . I think you're great.

The Rolling Stones had their "Between the Buttons" Album photo shot on Primrose Hill after an all night recording session....and Paul McCartney, spotted a mysterious man who was just behind him on the hill one early morning (after an all night Abbey Rd session) who suddenly disappeared not to be seen anywhere,...and wrote "Fool on the Hill" inspired by that experience.... Down at the Camden Lock area is Dingwall's, a very iconic punk bar which hosted legendary bands during the 70's-early 80's.....Also, the Roundhouse could be seen nearby, another iconic venue, which hosted bands from the Doors to the Ramones. The Clash had their rehearsal space just around the lock too (cover on an album photographed there too). Perhaps you could make a Part II version of this area,....omitting the Movie Stars and Victorian Era chaps and focusing on Rock n' Rollers (although you did mention 'Madness'!). I was a 20 year old American lad who spent the Spring & Summer of 1980 staying a block away from Chalk Farm Station....it was such a memorable time, I found myself wanting to know more about the area for years later.....I wish I'd knew then what I've learned from your video.

I enjoyed the long video, had quiet a nice time watching it :) Its very interesting to hear about the history of an area, especially one thats not touristy. I'll have to have a walk around there, I was looking for places in London, that were interesting, but not so crowded with tourists

We went to the same primary school! Although at quite different times. Mr. Wilkinson was head master when I went. I grew up in a flat on Regents Park Road as well, adjacent to the church. Been enjoying your videos , keep it up!

Really enjoyed your poetry selection from primary school. Your teacher must have been excellent, giving a gold star and great comment for what was actually quite insolent from you, his student. I'm certain you appreciate him now.

I think you've rekindled my love for London with your videos. I knew about Chalk Farm station being the Madness album cover never knew about the Winchester club though so thanks for that . Primrose Hill was also the place they shot the album cover for their Rise & Fall album & one of 100 or so of my favourite Madness songs on there is Primrose Hill which is the closest to poetry Madness ever came. Incidentally as an Idea they did an excellent album called "The Liberty of Norton Folgate" maybe a video on that part of London?

Joolz, you are a veritable fount of knowledge... how do you accumulate/retain so many gems of wisdom? I just adore all the tales of old London and seeing the (thankfully listed) remnants of what was....always feel sad to think of all that open countryside under concrete now...maybe if aliens ever come, they will demolish all the bad stuff and we’ll be back to green spaces once more 😄

Very entertaining and informative. At certain moments on your tour you were very near to where Sylvia Plath lived/died, and also to fashion photographer David Bailey's house/studio. I was lucky enough to live in a flat in Primrose Hill for six months in the 80s despite being skint. Every time someone visited we'd all end up on the hill looking at the best view of London.
