hiatal hernia - everything you need to know

hiatal hernia - everything you need to know
In this video you will learn about hiatal hernia, hernia types, hiatal hernia causes and hiatal hernia symptoms. There are two types of hiatal hernias - sliding hiatal hernia and rolling hernia. There are 3 subdivisions rolling hiatal hernias -type i hernia, type ii hernia and type iii hernia.
type i hernia is also known as sliding hiatal hernia and other hernia types are the rolling hernias. Among them type ii hernia and type iii hernia are also known as mixed hiatal hernia.
In this video we have also discussed about hernia, diaphragm anatomy, diaphragmatic hernia, diaphragmatic hernia anatomy and diaphragmatic hernia types. Among all types of diaphragm hernia hiatal hernia is the most common one. So we focused on hiatal hernia in this video. Our next video will be on other types of diaphragmatic hernia.
In the hiatal hernia sliding hiatal hernia is more common than rolling hernia. Sliding hiatal hernia is seen in 90% cases of all cases of hiatal hernia. Whereas rolling hernia is about 10% only. Hiatal hernia takes place mostly in the esophageal hiatus. We have described the most common factors responsible for it in this video. We also described about the parts and anatomy of esophagus and the diaphragm.
Hiatal hernia has often been called the "great mimic" because its symptoms can resemble many disorders. Among them, a person with a hiatal hernia can experience dull pains in the chest, shortness of breath, and swallowed food "balling up" and causing discomfort in the lower esophagus until it passes on to the stomach. In addition, hiatal hernias often result in heartburn but may also cause chest pain or pain with eating. In most cases however, a hiatal hernia does not cause any symptoms. The pain and discomfort that a patient experiences is due to the reflux of gastric acid, air, or bile. While there are several causes of acid reflux, it occurs more frequently in the presence of hiatal hernia.

I'm sorry to hear you're going through this. Persistent heartburn can be very distressing. It's important to see a specialist, like a gastroenterologist, who can conduct thorough tests to determine the cause. If your current doctor isn't taking your symptoms seriously, consider seeking a second opinion. In the meantime, keep a detailed diary of your symptoms and any potential triggers, as this can help with diagnosis and treatment.

Can a hiatal hernia cause intestinal gas to only go up and not down for hours after eating? And can gallstones do this as well?

Yes, a hiatal hernia can potentially contribute to intestinal gas moving upward after eating, causing discomfort. However, gallstones are more commonly associated with digestive issues in the lower part of the digestive system, rather than causing gas to move upward. It's advisable for the person to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation of their symptoms.

Hello, I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's diagnosis. A Hill's Grade IV hiatal hernia can indeed lead to discomfort and breathing issues. While your doctor may have advised no medication, surgery, or follow-up, it's important to seek a second opinion from another gastroenterologist or a specialist experienced in treating hiatal hernias. They may offer different insights or recommend lifestyle changes to manage symptoms effectively. Feel free to share the results for further discussion. I hope your daughter finds relief soon.
