Prey did this same program at the 92nd street YMHA in New York just before this performance in Chicago. When he finished "Mein" the NY audience went crazy - quite literally - they applauded for about 5 minutes as he nailed it. I was lucky to have a stage seat on the edge of the stage in the first seat to Prey's left side. At 28 it seemed a miracle to me! He sang "Mein" slightly faster in NYC than here and the high F#s gleamed. I never heard him do lieder in NY again, though I did hear him do opera. Does anyone remember the late Wolfgang Anheisser? (sp). He died very young and would have been the successor to DFD and Prey.

Hermann Prey occupies a position in lieder singing somewhat similar to Leonard Warren in opera in that Prey's voice was characterized by extraordinary warmth and roundness with a great balance of ring in the sound throughout his range. Further, his handling of his passagio was consistently even and accomplished with such smoothness that it could be a challenge to detect it at times. His was one of the great voices of the twentieth century, and he had few peers in lieder. I had the opportunity to hear him sing this on my college campus in the 1970s. He was every bit as convincing live as he is here! What a fine artist!

LOVE Hermann Prey & miss him. He sang some things (Italian opera, for one) better than Dietrich Fischer Dieskau. He was also a natural born actor, which the latter was not.

For my taste, this is quite slow in some pieces. It lacks somehow agility and fervour. Well, performing in a restrained way is also an art. Usually it's better to give less than too much... ;-)

Nah it’s right, he was an alcoholic and near the end of his career had some problems with intonation that I was told were related to his alcoholism. Regardless, such an artist and one of the best recordings of the cycle

That is a fair point of criticism but I might add that first of all it is really not too bad (you can tell he isn't at all unaware of his pitch) and secondly, he always puts freeness of voice first unlike others who put intonation first but lack the freeness which I value much more than the latter. (And again, it isn't even that bad)

Heard him many times both in opera and Lieder. The tone always seemed to me veiled and lacking in penetration. Not overly inventive in interpretation (every verse of the first song sung exactly the same), and most objectionable, he often sang slightly under the pitch. Many examples of this fault here. Some may find Fi-Di fussy, but I don’t think he sang a note in his entire career that was not perfectly tuned.

If you care a lot about intonation then Prey might not be the singer for you to listen to. But you'll be missing out on an incredible free, warm, falsetto dominant instrument possessed by a great artist that sung everything with heart.
