Grandios!

The level of committment these two have thrown into this work is wildly amazing. You see it in her anguish as the work marches on and the delerium expressed by Julian. This is masterful. Move over DFD.

New ways of interpretation in new and "other" times where sentiment runs short. His Interpretation is a revolution for us but he found and used the style Schubert had in mind. Its a overwhelming gift for those who know the music or studied Müllerin. No more words, thanks, deep going thanks, wonderfull.

Die schöne Müllerin is always considered als the less talented little brother of the Winterreise. After hearing this spectacular interpretation I know this isn't right. This cycle is also a very sad drama, this time of a young man who is deeply in love with the schöne Müllerin and who thinks that his love is reciprocal. But she never loved him. She prefers the superficial green man. He hates his rival, a hunter, who is a macho type of guy, totally different from the shy poet, the artist, the musician. Schubert recognises himself. Every time I listen to this cycle, Julien Prégardien and Els Biesemans are making a deep impression on me. They show that they understand perfectly the text and especially the music of Franz Schubert. The last 2 songs (is the young man drowning himself?) are the most sad songs of them all, but right from the beginning, you can hear this sad ending in the interpretation of these two wonderful musicians. Geweldig en ontroerend.

I have 34 recorded versions of Die Schone Mullerin in my iTunes library. This KZread video is my favorite version of all! I must make do with it until Julian Pregardien releases a studio or live recording. I adore his father's CD and DVD versions as well, but Julian brings such meaning and color to each crystal-clear syllable that he surpasses his dad.

Julius Stockhausen sang this song cycle for the first time in Vienna in May.1856. At the time there were only two editions available, one by Sauer & Leidesdorf (1824) and another by Diabelli (1830). It is believed the latter contains some ornamentation by Vogl. I do not know which edition Mr. Stockhausen used for the premier. It is curious the name Mr. Stockhausen appears in the front page of publication of Schoenemuellerin published in 1860s which is as the same as Diabelli's. In this performance Mr. Pregardien put some alterations, but I wander on what purpose he did put them. I am neither German nor European. Many music lover would perhaps think this kind of singing has authenticity. But my opinion is singers must be careful if he sings on historical bases such as ornamentation.

Is there historical precedent for the ornamentation he does? I like very much ‘Der Müller und der Bach’. I think it’s the way everyone feels the song, but singers will not do it this way for fear of being accused of sentimentality. Is he singing ‘droben’ instead of ‘oben’ in the last song?

Jeder mag selbst entscheiden, was ihm mehr liegt.
