I was aware of Hermann Prey, but haven't really listened to him previously. He has what I'd call a very "natural" voice, almost sounds untrained, as though he's just a man with a very nice voice who thought he might like to sing sometimes and hoped others would find it pleasing. His voice sounds very consistent throughout his range, which seems very adequate but he can lighten it to near tenor tones in his higher register, otherwise it's rich and a bit darker than Fischer Diskau's, and you'd never say the latter's voice was anything other than polished to perfection. A very enjoyable recital, with many songs I've not previously heard. The piano is a bit recessed, but again a very natural recording ambience.

The way Fischer-Dieskau used to sing was more elegant and more in the lieder style. It's my humble opinion.

I never heard an untrained voice which could sing in the passaggio range and higher so effortlessly lole Hermann Prey., his so called technical skills were unsurpassed by any other German baritone after the Second World War.. His interpretation you could say sounds naturally, but i am sure it was the product of hard work, every days practice..

I always thought he was a light baritone like myself but here to me he sounds really not that light. He sings very natural. It doesn't sound like he imitates a lower voice and neither does it make you think about a possible career as tenor (although Heldentenor seems not far away. He never pushes. In short you hear here a true professional. I don't like the music very much. Perhaps a very light and bright but not loud piano sound might sound better to have more contrast.

He would not have had a career as a tenor. He might have had a career as a contertenor.

@@ColonelFredPuntridgeHis baritone was lyrical, not suited for Iago or Rigoletto. Wisely, I think, he did not sing Verdi.
