Yep. A turbocharger will only last maybe ~150K miles. Change your synthetic motor oil more often than recommended by Toyota in their owner's manual.

4runner is such a garbage. We rented one. It barely gets any go and hardly accelerates on highways and the tranny shifts horribly. It always jerks during acceleration. Never get a 4Runner in 2023! It should have retired years ago.

@@dtna I change my 2023 Lexus ES300h every six-months or 5,000 miles, whichever occurs first, period. Not at 10,000 miles like Lexus recommends. That's ridiculous on a direct injection multi-port engine. Oil & filters are cheap, engines are expense like Scotty says and The Car Care Nut on KZread.

192k on my 2010 4runner. Tough as nails and has given me literally zero problems EVER. And I use the hell out of it for surveying every day for the past 6 years. By far the best vehicle I've ever had.

2004 4Runner Sport 4wd 4.0L. 310K miles on it and still going strong! Bought it in 2010 with 80K miles.

The biggest issue on these are the rear Door the rear window goes up/down in tail gate and water drains in between glass and paneling and cuz the rear bumpers flat on bottom of door the drains don’t drain the debris so starts to rot sheet metal from inside out!

As someone who owns a Toyota FJ (basically the exact same power train just different body) I can attest this engine and transmission combo is absolutely amazing. Decent power and with basic maintenance they'll last forever 🙂👍

I had an 04 4runner that I bought used in ~2011 and traded it for a 2016 Tacoma TRD OR 4x4 when the third gen came out. Going from the 4.0 to 3.5 was a huge mistake. I hated how that engine performed in a truck. It had no low end. Fuel economy was no better than the 4.0. Had to jump down from 6th to 4th to climb any decent grade. Regardless, I have a '21 F150 with the 5.0 now and it has 400 hp, gets better fuel economy than both(averages ~19.5 mpg on e10-15 no matter how I drive), and the seats don't hurt my back on long drives like the tacoma did. Really makes me question why I would have ever bought a mid size truck.

Weak rear end though. Specifically the pinion bearing. And the gas tank capacity leaves a lot to be desired. Otherwise a great vehicle though.

Own a 2011 4Runner Trail......absolutely the best vehicle I've ever owned. It's just been bulletproof so far. Just keep it maintained and it takes everything I've dished out to it and more. And a bonus is the VALUE it keeps over other vehicles. It's freakishly reliable is the best phrase I can come up with.

The only vehicle that might be more reliable is the Landcrusier.

I have a 2007 4runner with the same power train. Bought it with about 37,000 miles on it. Now has 170,000. No major problems. I can easily tow our small sailboat and Hal’s when needed. On the highway at 70 mph I get 22 mpg consistently. It purrs along at 2,000 rpm. People carp about SUV gas mileage but to me it is amazing that a vehicle that heavy can go that far on a milk jug of gas. I plan to be buried in it. 😏

Bought my 2007 4Runner in 2008 with 29,000 miles on it. Now has 150,000. Also, no major problems. I also plan to be buried in mine.😏

I own a 2015 4Runner, it’s the same ride when I bought it new. Only had to change tires,brake pads, engine oil, and filters. No issues and gonna hold onto for decades to come.

While driving on dry asphalt that 4Runner should be in 2 wheel drive!!! I promise you it won’t last forever if you’re driving around in four-wheel-drive on dry pavement with a part time 4WD system!

Another huge bonus is that the online forum support for the 4runner is very good. Many guides out there for DIY people to improve/fix/maintain this car.

Peep the vape at 2:09. Owner must’ve been stressed coming to see Scotty, yet he had nothing to be stressed about. It’s a Toyota from Japan.

Because of the changes coming in the 2024 4RNR engine I bought a 2023 4RNR LAST December. The 2017 4 RNR I also bought new had 125,000 miles. It went to my son-in-law. Keeping it in the family.

The thing that amazed me about the 4Runner is how incredibly it towed. When I first drove it, I was worried, then I towed a 2014 Jetta from northern Va to south Florida and it was amazing

my 2000 4runner limited with 184000 miles is still running strong, it it gets put to work! Immortal work trucks, these 4runners, last forever!

Toyota 2005 V8 4Runner here bought new; wife’s truck. She says she’s going die with it…constantly being asked if she wants to sell it. Says NO WAY.

I bought a 2020 TRD 4runner 2 years ago and I love it, along with my 2011 FJ Cruiser

Had a 2012 4Runner and just traded it in for a 2021 SR5 Premium. Absolutely love 4Runners for all the reasons you mentioned!

Still daily driving an 04 SR 5, only thing I’ve replaced are brakes . Still runs like new. Most dependable vehicle I’ve ever owned. Have a happy and healthy new year.

I sold my 06 Tacoma. 4 litre V-6. Same engine as this vehicle. Truck had 337,000 on the odometer. Ran like it did when I bought it new. My nephew owns it now and he loves it.

I have a 2019 4Runner-- great vehicle. I added a Peddle Commander, and it really helped with the acceleration.

I had a 1998 4 runner Ltd. I've had blazers & Jimmy's and you can't compare them. But I had @ 300 kms I say @ because speedo was broke for a few years. It truly is the best vehicle I've ever had I sold it 2 years ago, it was running great. No surprises. Wonderful vehicle

My 2006 4Runner w/ 200k is running great and gets 17/24 mpg. I'm in PA so the frame is rusty but the body looks like new still. Great vehicle

My wife has a 14 escape titanium, I have an 08 5 spd civic SI, neither have rust, we live in NH, neither of them have any rust. I maintain them religiously, andinkeep them clean, and in the winter, I bring them to a brushless carwash, kee th saltoff off of them, and I do the underbody washes,a few times a week. it's the only way to keep them rustfree

Love it! There's another way to deal with emission inspections. Pack up and move out of those places that control every element of your life. I did that in 1992 and never looked back.

You can turn off the lane departure warning, not disconnect it.

Proud owner of an ‘06 4.7L V8. 218K miles, and tow a camper all the time. Runs like new. Best vehicle I’ve owned, no issues!

@@bareSnare I was concerned with the braking too. I have Raybestos heavy duty high carbon rotors and Akebono Performance Ceramic pads, which make a big difference. Plus the trailer brakes are key

I just purchased a 2022 4Runner SR5 and have been getting 17-18 mpg around town. Just took it on a shirt Road Trip this past weekend and got 23 mpg. Very happy with the mileage. I had a 2012 Honda Pilot and it’s was getting 17mpg around town and 20-21 mpg on the highway so I really can’t complain.

I have a 2023 and I love mine, no knob for shifting my 4x4.

I love that Scotty is driving the car in 4wd. I've had mine since 2012 still going strong.

Got mine yesterday after trading in my beloved GTI for it…But I have zero regrets so far it’s a big quality Rig that rides smooth in its own way! I got close to $3000 off MSRP for some online sale they had going on that I didn’t even know about that day. No dealership markups or delivery fees of any kind. 40th anniversary edition in black. It’s beautiful and I’ve gotten a bunch of big compliments on it quickly.

Rides smooth in it's own way is a good way of putting it. On the streets it's not as smooth as your average sedan, but on trails it doesn't feel much different than on the streets lol. I'm flying down bumpy, grooved, unmaintained gravel roads at 65mph and it doesn't feel much different than usual highway driving

I just traded my 2018 golf r in for a 2016 limited...and only slightly miss the golf so far.

If you have the limited trim, the only annoying thing is the XREAS shocks. Once they start leaking you have to replace the entire unit, typically $5k for parts and labor. Better option in that case, gut the XREAS and use bilstein 4600 or 5100 shocks to retain the factory height. Parts and labor and alignment probably around 1000 or so.

I have a 2014 4Runner Limited. Two years ago I had the XREAS disconnected and replaced with a Rough Country 3” lift and suspension with NITTO Ridge Grappler tires. It rides so much smoother and it hasn’t given me any problems. Looks amazing too.

In the gulf, we get the same V6 4.0L engine with a 6 speed auto transmission with a LC300. Got it, love it. Its the same combo that was available with the old V6 LC200 and the Prado

Love mine. Another quality product from the Tahara plant. Scotty are you originally from the Buffalo area? Great review as always.

My 2012 has over 280k miles on it and it still runs great.

I made sure I bought the 4Runner made in Japan in 2004. That car / truck still runs. My son has it.

I have a 2001 Avalon and it is a beast for a family car.

Purchased my '02 4wd SR5 new Nov '01. 187k on the odo - with plenty of off-roading. OEM (only!) timing belt, radiator, injectors, cat converter, a/c compressor, antenna motor, and routine maintenance at the dealership, or AAA authorized shop. OEM radio/cassette/CD works like new. Runs like a dream! Why pay crazy money for a new one?

Mine looks exactly like yours, Scotty. Same year/color. I paid $30K. Has 58K miles, though. No leather seats, just cloth. Love the fact that it doesn't have excessive bells and whistles as that's more features that could malfunction over time and I don't use them anyway. FINALLY got the vehicle I've wanted for years!!!!

Recently traded my 2014 Jeep Wrangler for a 2022 4Runner TRD Off-Road and absolutely love it!

I used to own a 2021 4Runner. Here's a story you'll want to hear. I was driving home one day from work and I filled up the gas tank. I drove on the highway for about a half-hour and looked at the guage cluster and couldn't believe what is saw. As big and heavy as it was with its 4L V6, it was getting 26.1 MPG. I wish I took a picture of it. I drive a RAV4 now and that number is the average.

True. I took a picture after a 3 hr drive. 26.7 mpg. I knew no one would believe it. Averaging around 23 now. For the weight, versatility and quality, can't beat it. Mines a 2023.

I have a 2006 4 Runner with over 252,000 miles on it. It's got a bad ECU which I'll be changing out next month but, other than that it runs fine.

4H on dry pavement. Yikes..!!! This is one of the reason why my wife has full-time 4WD 4Runner vs I use part-time 4WD 4Runner.

Front and rear differential gears are the same so you can drive on dry pavement unlike domestic which used to have one extra tooth in front gear so it pulled rear wheels more. I think my 3rd Gen was limited to 52 mph on dry pavement. I looked for towing information and limitations for transmission and I didn't see it or anything about limiting speed. I don't think the new AWD systems or 4H have the same worries.

Happy I got a 2021 4runner Limited. I do sometimes wish it had a few more speeds, but no complaints otherwise.

🫵100% been like this for over 10+ years now. because they did it right! If they castrate this Truck, and make it a four-cylinder, 10 speed Turbo? In the long run, it will hurt ($)Toyota. No, I think they should at least, have an optional V6. we’ll see…

I just bought a 2023 4runner TRD off road. I had to cut off an arm and a leg and hand them to the finance manager. But it was worth it.

She got a good deal. 35k? I've seen them for more than the 2021 sticker.

Have 21 toyota trd pro 4runner. Love it. Can easily sell it for what I paid for it 2 years ago.

One additional benefit is the 4.0 liter is port injected…valves stay clean and no high pressure fuel pump.

We’re renting a 2wd 4Runner for the weekend right now and I want one. Solid as a tank, smooth riding, roomy, and it may outlast me.

I'm the first owner of a 2011 Trail that has required only routine maintenance. Last month, I bought another 4Runner, a new TRD Off Road Premium. It was a easy decision, as I know how to service a 5th generation 4Runner. Now my wife and I each have our own 4Runner and together we put on about 10,000 miles a year. These vehicles could last 30 years as there is no rust in Phoenix, Arizona.

I have a 88 FJ62 landcruiser, 2F engine 81k miles, no rust, 4x4 im happy with it and I only paid 6200 course it wasnt running and hadnt run since 1998. Newest truck I own.

I just leased a '24. Definitely buying it out when my lease is up.

I'm Jeep Wrangler 4xe owner, which so far has been great, but I'm considering swapping it for a newer model 4Runner (2020 or newer) as I really need something with good long term reliability, and want the tried and true old school powertrain. I have lots of experience driving 4th and 5th gen 4runners over the last 16 years and I'm impressed with how great they are.

How’s the MPG with the Wrangler? My gas one is good for about 20 on the highway with K02’s JKU.

My 2016 4Runner SR5 2wd gets 21 mpg driving down 395 from Mammoth to Los Angeles full of gear at 70-80 mph. And it gets 13 mpg on flat highway towing my 2019 Jayco 154BH Baja trailer. This is with Goodyear DuraTrac factory sized tires and wheels. I love this truck. Yeah, I miss 4wd. But I like the bigger payload and better gas mileage for my purposes.

Interesting insight. I own a Toyota Land Cruiser 150 series with the same 4.0 V6. Last I heard, it’s successor will not be having a V6 anymore but a 4 cylinder turbo and a hybrid.

I have an '18 with 158K and counting, Scotty is correct! Bullet proof reliability.

Based on what I've seen with changes coming to the 4 runner we went yesterday and put a deposit down to order a 2024 TRD off road model to replace our Highlander.

I see the Highlander went to a turbo 4 this year as well. My sister has a 2019 Highlander, great car. Should be around a good long time.

Had a 2019 too but traded it in for a ‘21 Platinum which has more features. I still got the V6. It is no longer offered.

Hidden gem of the car world right now are the Lexus GX460. Same platform as the 4Runner and FJ Cruiser, 4.6L V8, 6 speed AISIN trans, only downside is the full-time 4x4 (torsen limited slip locking center diff w/Low Range) which requires matching tires so a set of 4 if you have a blowout. You can pick them up on the used market for about the same cost as a used 4Runner, except they come with a lot more creature comforts and a V8 which increases towing capacity.

Aside from small chipped paint and scratches inside its in pretty great condition...so far. I had it shipped to Idaho. Will get the undercarriage protected from our winter, road chemicals.

I bought my 2013 4runner with 175k miles with all service records. Absolutely no issues with it and it is at 206k miles only one year later!

It's a shame that Toyota is getting rid of these super reliable V6 engines and replacing them with 4-cylinder turbos 🤦‍♂🤦‍♂. Toyota didn't sell any turbo engine vehicles in the US for a quarter century but now they're gonna make nothing but turbos.

Toyota has been putting turbos on the Lexus line for over a decade with great success.

I own a 2005 Toyota Highlander with 200k miles. Long story short, it’s a tank. It’s a beast in the snow, it’s easy to work on, I love it.

Scotty takes off all the beauty covers & sends them back to the manufacturers (with a threating message)😄

I am so happy I got the last of the 5th gen 4runners

Yes, it's a gas guzzler in its class, but it's one of the most reliable gas guzzelers ever built.

I just bought a 2023 TRD Pro 4Runner a week ago. Traded in my 2014 F-350, with the 6.7 diesel toward it. I don’t regret my decision, I’m loving the 4Runner. It just might be the last vehicle I ever buy.

Scotty! You need a sunroof in a 4Runner to fully experience the wind flow with the rear window down! Great video as usual! Thank you.

Except my 4Runner sunroof has leaked since day one and dealer says it’s normal leakage which is a bunch of baloney.

I have. 4Runner Venture (basically an unbadged TRD pro) and this thing is a Mountain Goat. Not the greatest on gas mileage but we know this rig will last forever. Plus, turbo engines age quick in the AZ heat.

It’s more of a trd off road than a pro, doesn’t have the pro shocks, doesn’t have the pro interior (dual zone climate, jbl seats etc) doesn’t have the pro exhaust, doesn’t have the pro intake, doesn’t have the pro skid plate doesn’t have the pro anything but the wheel not even the tires that come with the pro or even the pro roof rack, you literally have a trd off road premium with pro wheels not to mention no pro grille.

Every used 4Runner I find for sale has over 250,000 miles, but run great.

I have always liked the 4Runner and FJ Cruiser. Each could last a lifetime.

My 2010 Tacoma has the same setup. Great truck...

Bought my 2018 a year and a half ago with 51000. I was finished with American garbage. With the resale value and longevity it’s worth the money

My 2010 Tacoma had the clanging in the engine when I bought it new .. now has 311000 miles still going strong..lol..

Love my 2016. It was expensive used, but well worth it.

One thing I have to disagree with Scotty…love my sunroof on my ‘02 4Runner!!☀️

Bought a new 2023 limited 4Runner just because I love them and will never buy the 2024 and beyond. Getting rid of the V6 was a dealbreaker for me!

That subaru forester in the background was also made in Japan, has AWD, only 1 inch less ground clearance, and 10k less and 2x fuel economy combined.

Not even worried about the miles per gallon here. Once you drive a vehicle that requires a higher octane, the price can come around the same. I can think of plenty out there that are smaller and you can spend just as much. Leased plenty of vehicles here. Volkswagen, Audi BMW, etc…. Bought this one to keep long term. Only difference is this will spend less time in the shop. 150,000 miles plus and drives still new. No worries here.

My cousin has an older 4Runner. that still works well

Sold my 2022 4runner after one year. I couldn't get over two things - bad mpg and transmission scared me every time P to Drive. It would clunk. I tried everything to correct. Nothing helped. I had to learn to live with it. As a one person 99% of the time commuter I got a 23 Corolla Hybrid made in Japan. Honestly I miss the 4Runner but I enjoy everything about the made in Japan Corolla. Everything no rattling and it doesn't feel cheap it drives as smooth as a $45k car.
