Currently on my 3rd 4Runner (2019). I’ve only owned 4Runners. I truly believe that the 1999 used 4Runner I got in college would have lasted longer had I not been rear ended on the freeway. I walked away fine. Got a 2003 4Runner used after that. Lasted a really long time. No issues. Sitting at a light, a ford f150 rear ended me and somehow bounced off my vehicle and into a wall. I was fine, I was even able to drive home. The f150 not so much. I still don’t know how that happened. I ended up selling it and telling the buyer what happened. He bought it because it had 3rd row. Even with the minor cosmetic damage, he took it. I used the money to buy the 2019 4Runner. I always wondered what happened to it. did it die? Did it have other issues? Then one day I saw it on the road…6 years later. I still see it on the road too. Sold it with 150,000 miles and the damage. And it’s still going. I will forever buy 4Runners. I’m just pissed I missed the standard CarPlay…by one year! Btw this is in Hawaii. We love our 4Runners.

It had a thick layer of pine needles from sitting under a tree for a few months. LOL I used that as leverage in negotiating the price. Said 3 families just left without buying a vehicle today... and I didn't see anyone in finance. Got a great deal on the vehicle... about $3k under sticker price after taxes and fees. The 4Runner is a great truck. Rock solid reliable. The only real long term issue they have is the frame rust if you live in the salt belt. It's been a known issue since forever, and Toyota never did anything to negate it. You can mostly prevent it by applying Fluid Film every few years, but 98% of owners never do. If you're buying a used one, make sure to have someone take a good look at the frame.

People don’t understand why to a Toyota. In Australia we say “ you can go to outback with any car . But if you come back alive need a Toyota.” So those people never care all these technologies. Still we need to wait for 79 series Land Cruiser for long time. No climate control just this year added automatic gear .

My first car was a '63 Dodge with a slant 6 engine and three on the tree. Sure, it was lighter than this 4 Runner, but it got 23 MPG on the highway. That was with a carburetor, points and distributor instead of EFI. Considering all the advancements over the past 60 years, getting only 19 MPG in a nicer and heaver vehicle is not all that impressive. Oh, and I bought it used in 1969 for $300.

The problem is the carburetors that makes a 4000lb vehicle get 50 mpg have been stolen and denied access to a patient. A man I knew in 1976 designed and built such a carburetor. Lincoln Contential getting 52 mpg. After numerous thefts and patent issues he just gave up. As nice as that car was, his 1970 Corvette was the best. A V8 with twin turbo chargers without altering the body. A true Corvette sleeper. Ah, the good old days.

@EnriqueThiele yeah... people dont' realize that cars modern counterparts have actually gotten much heavier than their counterparts years ago. A quick google search tells me that the dodge truck he's talking about most likly didn't weigh more than 4000 lbs as that's what's listed as the heaviest dodge truck of that year. the 4runner alone doesn't weigh less than 4400 for the lightest model listed. Closer to 5000 pounds, that's 1000 pounds more, meaning that it's 25% more body weight on the 4 runner. Back then the tires were also much skinnier, and as we know skinnier tires give you better gas milage. Today's 4runners new 4 runner has larger tires than that dodge truck. By weight alone, you'd it takes one galon of fuel to move 174 pounds for one mile on the dodge, versus 263 pounds per galon for one mile on the 4runner. looking at it by that metric, the 4 runner is still technically more efficient than the dodge.

It's a little more (maybe 6,000-10,000 more depending on trim) than id personally say a 4runner should be worth, BUT, they're proven tech and engineering from head to toe (even the TRD Sport XREAS suspension, which has questionable reliability, uses the specific model I can't remember the name of that actually do last eons), so they absolutely PRINT money for Toyota because of their ground level low prodiction cost. So even the limited versions don't need to be marked up a lot. Its MSRP is about as much as I paid for my TRD Sport with the dealer markup

I bought one of the 2nd gen 3.5 ecoboost in an f150. It is twin turbo and dual injection. Honestly, I see it as an engineering masterpiece. Who would have ever thought an f150 would come stock with twin turbos. So much power it can be pretty scary. Stock of course

FYI.....Toyota is moving towards turbos and hybrid drivetrains. The new Landcruiser is a twin turbo 4 cylinder hybrid drivetrain. Grab one of these 6 cylinder 4Runners while they're still making them

Love that it is V6 naturally aspirated and a 5 speed, not 8 or 10 where you have a transmission that is in a state of constantly shifting.

I get why simpler is better, but for $50K, I would expect to have more bells and whistles that come standard on most other cars at that price point.

Sir, you are completely missing the point. One of the reasons people love these vehicles is because it doesn't have all the latest bells & whistles. However, it's still well equipped with the safety and comfort features most people want, and manual controls that are easy to use and don't break down. Like my father used to say...things left off a vehicle don't cause trouble.

@@johnbarbour115 this is exactly the reason I bout a 2020 4runner limited, just enough bells and whistles without any of the annoying stuff like auto turnoff when stopped etc and proven not some new model that you are beta testing.

@@catdadd6808 Yep exactly why I bought mine in 2020... I wanted 4 things... a radio, AC, cruse control, and power windows LOL. Every car has that now. But the next thing I want is Lane Keeping and Assist. Long drives are better with the included Adaptive Cruse Control, but would love to have lane keeping and assist.
