    Vivek Anand I agree, I would be even more impressed with the M2, if that's indeed how fast it was. Alas, Doug is mistaken: the DCT does 0-60 in 4.3 seconds, and the manual he is presenting in 4.5. Biiig difference to 4.0 in this car segment.

    I've owned an E46 and an M2 and honestly they are both incredible cars. I liked the E46 better, but only because of the NA engine and the 9k redline. I had an SMG but got to try an manual once. I felt the SMG was an amazing compromise. I love my M2, but I still dream of my E46.

    Dang it, Doug. You didn't mention the 2 Series only odd quirk. The driver seat is off-center. It is rotated to the right a few milimeters. During crash testing, they discovered that the dummy's head would slip between the curtain airbag and steering wheel airbag in a small overlap test, which could lead to fatal head injuries. Reengineering the car so this wouldn't happen would cost millions to redesign the dashboard, sterring column, floor pan, ect. BMW's simple solution was to mount the seat at an angle, so that a larger portion of the dummy's head would hit the sterring wheel airbag.

    However, if you're young and looking for an affordable M car you're better off looking for a nice used 2005 E46 M3. It's .5 inches longer than the M2, and 2 inches narrower, so it's just as tossable, more even because you have a real connection to the road. You can get them with SMG's or Manual. They don't have that awful electrically assisted steering. They're naturally aspirated so you don't have to worry about paying out the ass after your crappy 4 year, 50,000 mile BMW warranty runs out and the turbo goes out.(Really BMW?) I'll never get rid of my E46 M3. I already have a replacement engine and transmission in storage, fully rebuilt and waiting for the current ones to go fail., all for far less than a new M2....

    Same, I DDed my e46 M3 for 8 years and still love it. It's finally off DD duty with 160k miles. I just gave it a DR Vanos Hub and don't plan to ever sell. It's getting old and rare now. In perfect condition at age 15 I get compliments every single time I take it out. Way more than when it was new and expensive. It's now an enthusiast car instead of a rich dbag car. If the M2 will ever depreciate I'd like to pick one up though. That or a Cayman.

  • @epiczeus945

    @epiczeus945

    7 жыл бұрын

    The E46 M3 is consistently rated as the best M car BMW ever made. To me it was the last great M car. It's a NA high revving straight six, and while the E90/E92/E93 were good cars they really took away from the joy and design by being 8 cylinders. The current F30, while beautiful in its own right, is a twin turbo nightmare. My BMW mechanic has always said they're not worth it and cusses whenever he has one in his shop. I had my BMW at his shop getting an oil change recently and someone had an M4 in there getting a $7500 turbo repair. Forced induction is really not worth it. If BMW had a 100,000 mile warranty it'd be worth it, but honestly I think BMW makes more money off of factory maintenance than they do off of selling their cars.

    I have some classic exotics that l love owning and driving and a few modern ones that have about 3-400 more horsepower than l will ever use. I was looking for a fun car to use as a daily driver and basically a beater. The one that will get stone chips and door dings. I stumbled across an M2 that the owner loved but because he drove in traffic daily really wished he had got the two pedal version. I drove the car for about 5 minutes and seen exactly what you described. Usable horsepower, perfect size for urban combat and offering him $2k more than the dealer's number l still saved over $10k on a car that just hit 6k miles. 27,000 miles later l would say this was one of my best vehicles ever. I flog it unmercifully and it eats it up and begs for more. Also the quality is there too! All of the cosmetics are holding up well, no electrical gremlins and considering the abuse it has taken still is squeak and rattle free. I love the fact that at least a couple times a month another BMW owner in an M car will eyeball mine then boast about their 5 or 600 horsepower. I boast about my three sets of brake pads, four sets of tires and a clutch because l use every bit of my horsepower as often as possible!

    Nice upgrade from my old Dina 330 coupe. Smaller is better. Biggest concern is lack of suspension options, sometimes you want it softer after 7 hr.s on the road or a long day at work.
