2018 BMW M2 POV Drive - Is The Base Really an M Car? (Binaural Audio)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Is the 2018 BMW M2 is power by the N55 engine worth the price of admission, or should you fork over the extra cash for the S55 Competition? Let's take it out for a drive and find out if it still deserves to be called a real M Car.

Coming from an M2 competition owner: The regular M2 is 100 percent a "real" M car! Not all M cars have bespoke "S" engines, its more about the driving experience and the M2 chassis delivers that in spades.

Got an M4 and yes it‘s really big for a midclass coupe. Should have test drive a M2 as manual. But i want the S55 and the Competition didn‘t come out at this point. But the biggest mistake was to give up searching an E92 M3. They got soooo expensive and rare in mint condition. At the moment you can easy bought an M2 competition for the money here in Germany.

For those wondering, that growling sound when you let off the gas is an anti-lag system. The S55B30T0, S63B44T0/U/4, N55B30T0, S58B30T0, B58B30C/O1/M1 and the BMW I8 3cyl engine all have this anti-lag system that only happens when you have the engine to Sport+ mode. On the N55B30T0 and S63B44T0/U it is most aggressive.

One of the best summations of this car. Great point on the less steering feel being advantageous on daily commutes... I do complain that the auto rev match cannot be shut off. It's so good that it gives a more "synthetic" feel to the driving experience; almost like a video game... not what you want when you're looking for an analog car in a digital world.

OP not wrong about the dual sump. I track my 2018 M2 every year and it’s been (touchwood) bulletproof. Also, I never understood why people get butthurt about not having an “S” engine… the OG N55 is an epic unit… easy to mod, reliable, and the sound is just so, so, so much better than any S-powered M car. I drive my M2 in the snow on blizzaks, on the track on slicks, and it’s a decent daily driver too (take my kids to school each morning, no probs). The OG M2 is the best all-round, affordable sports car in recent memory. The only thing wrong with this one is it’s not a manual….

As expected, another super articulate and well thought out commentary on a great car. I'm an m235i owner that's eyeing an M2C sometime in the next few years. I'd love your thoughts on the M2C in a video like this one. Also, I put Dinan springs on the m235i and, with a subsequent alignment, the car awoke quite a bit. It's not as direct as my ZHP but it was a pretty dramatic improvement. Love the car. Just feeling the M lust.

I've tried a m2 comp and I wasn't blown away by the low end torque, the car felt more like an NA. I own a 2020 mustang gt pp1 6 speed and the gears are way to long and I need to rev that thing all the way to the redline to have fun so it's hard to have a good time on the streets with it. I used to own a 2013 genesis coupe 2.0t stage 2 and it had more low end torque than my mustang. I'm looking for the OG m2 to fill the void of the low end torque. Do you think an OG M2 with bolt ons and a tune would be what I'm looking for? Sorry for the long message.

As someone who bought one of these 9 months ago I have to agree in almost all aspects. I had the same issue calling this a successor to some of the previous BMW's and I think I would peg this as an E46 successor. I bought mine in a manual and it turns about 2500-3000 going down the highway and it has so much torque there is basically no need to downshift at all unless you are really looking to get into it. At 3450 pounds this car is so direct, grip is wonderful & power is there, although I am currently stage 1 itching to go to stage 2. I have a feeling I will end up keeping this car for another 2-3 years and probably end up building it towards 550-600rwhp which will probably be the sweet spot for this car imo.

Great video, I'll give a little more depth into the engine on top of what you mentioned about oil cooling. In reality, the only thing carried over from the base N55 engine was the block, even then, not the same as what you would find in a M235i. The M2's N55 has a forged crankshaft, forged connecting rods, redesigned and newer piston rings as well as cast iron cylinder liners opposed to the spray on ones in the standard engine. On top of that, you'd find a new exhaust manifold as well as re-designed intake plumbing. Hope this helps for anyone who had any questions about the real differences with the N55 in the M2.

I have 2017 m2 and 2011 e90 m3. I feel like they compliment each other. I might trade up to an m2c though as I like an engine that wants to rev, but it’s a lot of dough for that trade.

Had a DCT M2 comp a while back. Absolutley loved it. Later on sold it for a manual 981 cayman. I love the cayman just as much as i loved the M2 but the M2 had a character about it which i sometimes miss.

@Tedward I love the M2 but I want to ask you how is the fuel consumption for the N55 M2 at constants speeds? (100km/h - 120km/h - 140km/h) From what I saw until now on the internet it's pretty bad. I'm interested to know if this is an issue with the car shape which is not very aerodynamic and has a bad drag coefficient. I saw many videos and the new Supra is much better, even the M4 but not with much. What do you think?

Good review, definitely take an old M2 over an M235i. Like the older M2, good value on the used market relative to the M2C. I have not had the chance to sit in the new M2C seats, but the do look better than the old M2 seats, which seem very budget orientated. That said, not a dealer breaker!

A friend of mine gave me the keys of a M140i just before fitting and lsd. The torque was incredible, and dare I say it, too much for my liking. It's bloody fast for sure, but the shifter felt very rubbery, without the lsd even on the dry the back really tells you it looks for somewhere to put power. I'm just old game, but I liked my e36 m3 better everyday. It feels more special, more connected, older that's for sure, but any day starts well with a proper M car (don't worry, I also daily drive a 530d e39, stincky torquey diesel aha)

I have driven an M4 and just drove an OG M2, and I had soooo much more fun in the M2. It sounds much better, is more engaging to drive and the limits are much more approachable. Also, the DCT is just as good, but just have to drive in sport + for those heavenly firm shifts. Engagement and fun is more important to me than all out performance as a car enthusiast. My favorite car I have owned is the Honda S2000, and this is just as fun and much more practical. It's on my short list for my next car.
